This article is about the official type. For the scrapped type in core Generation I games, see List of glitch types (Generation I) → Bird.

The Flying type (Japanese: ひこうタイプ Flying type) is one of the eighteen types. Flying-type moves are super-effective against Bug-, Fighting-, and Grass-type Pokémon, while Flying-type Pokémon are weak to Electric-, Ice-, and Rock-type moves.

Generation II onwards

Flying-type Pokémon are not considered grounded for effects that affect grounded Pokémon (e.g. entry hazards). If they lose their ungrounded status by methods like holding Iron Ball or being under the effect of moves Ingrain (Generation IV onward), Gravity, Smack Down or Thousand Arrows they also lose their immunity to Ground type moves. Holding Ring Target makes them lose their type immunity to Ground type moves, but keeps ungrounded status for other effects.

Characteristics

Defense

In addition to being immune to Ground-type attacks and Arena Trap, Flying-type Pokémon are unaffected by Rototiller and all entry hazards (except Stealth Rock). Flying-type Pokémon also cannot absorb Toxic Spikes simply by switching in and do not receive the benefits from terrains (though they can still use Seeds). These immunities, as well as the immunity to Arena Trap, are removed when a Flying-type Pokémon is grounded by Ingrain, Gravity, Smack Down, Thousand Arrows, or Iron Ball. Sky Drop can pick up a Flying-type target and make it unable to move. On the next turn, Sky Drop will fail and free the target, even if the target is grounded.

When a Flying-type uses Roost, it temporarily loses its Flying type for a turn. If a pure Flying-type Pokémon uses Roost, then it will become a ??? type in Generation IV and a Normal type in Generation V onward.

Flying-type Pokémon, on average, have the highest Speed of all Pokémon and of fully evolved Pokémon.

Offense

Flying-type attacks are very powerful when combined with certain other attacking types, most notably Ground. Ground is strong against every type that resists Flying, and vice versa, so this combination is resisted only by Flying-type Pokémon whose other type resists Flying (such as an Electric/Flying Pokémon).

The effectiveness of the move Flying Press is calculated by multiplying the effectiveness of its move type (usually Fighting) and the Flying type.

Contest properties

In Contests, Flying-type moves are typically Cool moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation IX, there are 112 Flying-type Pokémon or 10.93% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Flying-type in at least one of their forms), making it the 4th most common type after Grass and before Psychic. All other types have been paired up with Flying at least once — in Generation VI, after the release of Hawlucha, Flying became the first type to have this trait.

The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. Some Pokémon have had their types changed, usually when a new type was introduced.

Moves

As of Generation IX, there are 31 Flying-type moves, or 3.4% of all moves (excluding those that are Flying-type only under certain circumstances), causing it to tie with Ground as the third rarest type among moves, after Dragon and before Ice and Fairy.

Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Flying-type moves were physical, but they may now also be special depending on the attack.

Some moves have had their types changed.

Trivia

  • Generations I, II, and V introduced more Flying-type Pokémon than any other generation, each with 19 (including Rotom's Fan form in Generation V). Generation VIII introduced the fewest Flying-type Pokémon, with five.
  • Generation IV introduced more Flying-type moves than any other generation, with seven. Generation IX introduced the fewest Flying-type moves, with zero.
  • Flying was the last Pokémon type to receive:
    • A single-typed Pokémon, receiving one with Tornadus in Generation V.
    • A dual-typed Pokémon with its type as the primary type, receiving two with Noibat and Noivern in Generation VI.
  • With the introduction of Hawlucha, and Togetic and its evolution Togekiss being changed to newly introduced Fairy and Flying-type, Flying became one of the first types, along with Water, to be paired with every other type, being followed thereafter by six more (Psychic, Fighting, Grass, Electric, and Dark.)
  • Despite the name of the type suggesting that all Pokémon that can fly have that type, there are Pokémon who can fly who are not of the Flying type such as Vikavolt. Additionally there are Pokémon with this type who cannot fly at all such as Natu.
  • All Flying-type moves are eligible to be used in Sky Battles.
  • Flying and Ground are tied with having the fewest notable type experts, with only five each.
  • Flying and Poison are the only types to have at least one Pokémon in every Egg Group (not counting the Ditto Egg Group).
  • Rookidee and its evolved form Corvisquire are the only regional bird Pokémon that are pure Flying-type.
