Physiology
Chimchar is a bipedal Pokémon resembling a chimpanzee. Its fur is primarily a shade of orange, although its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands, and feet are light yellow. Its ears are large in comparison to its head, and has red insides. It also has red markings around its eyes, as well as two pointed teeth in its upper jaw, a swirl-like symbol on its chest, and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet. It has a swirly crest of hair on its head. Its rear has a small, round, red patch that is usually obscured by flames produced by burning gas in its stomach. These flames cannot be put out by rain, although they go out when Chimchar goes to sleep, and burn weakly when it feels ill. In the past, this flame on its rear has caused people to mistake it for an apparition, dubbed the "Lantern-Tail". Chimchar is very agile, being able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains where it lives. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy.
Chimchar are chimpanzee-like Pokémon, primarily a shade of orange, but with light yellow on its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands and feet. The flames on their rears are produced by burning gas in their stomachs. The flames do not go out in the rain, and, unlike the tail flames of Charmander, those of Chimchar go out when they go to sleep. Although difficult to spot (due to Chimchar’s tail flame usually obscuring it), Chimchar has a small, rounded patch of red coloration on its rear. Chimchar’s ears are large in comparison to its head size, and have red ear insides. Chimchar have red markings above and to the sides of their eyes, a swirl-like symbol on its chest and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
Evolution
Chimchar is capable of several Fire-type moves such as Ember and Flame Wheel. It also knows a few Fighting and Dark moves such as Brick Break, Vacuum Wave, Nasty Plot, and Taunt. Unlike its fellow Fire-types, Chimchar can learn Grass Knot.
Chimchar evolves into Monferno, which evolves into Infernape.

Behavior
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Much like their real world counterpart, Chimchar are very inquisitive and are prone to mischief, but can show bravery when push comes to shove. Being very agile, Chimchar are able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains, where they live. Despite being based on chimpanzees, Chimchar's cry is actually much more similar to that of a spider monkey. When it is feeling sick, the flame on a Chimchar's rear burns weakly.

Main series
Major appearances
Paul's/Ash's Chimchar
When Paul first appeared, he commanded a Chimchar in When Pokémon Worlds Collide!. In Glory Blaze, Paul released him before Ash caught him in Smells Like Team Spirit. He evolved into a Monferno in Evolving Strategies! and later into an Infernape in Fighting Ire with Fire!.

Flint's Chimchar
Flint received his Infernape as a Chimchar, as seen in Flint Sparks the Fire!. It evolved all the way to Infernape prior to the events of the episode.

Team Poképals
Chimchar was one of the two main members of Team Poképals, which appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness.

Other
Chimchar debuted in Following A Maiden's Voyage!, where it was teasing a Dawn after stealing food from it. Piplup then started firing a Bubble Beam attack, but Chimchar kept jumping out of the way. Staraptor was hit in Piplup's line of fire and created a Whirlwind that wrecked everything in Professor Rowan's lab. Chimchar jumped out of a broken window, with Piplup chasing after it.

In The Rise of Darkrai, Alice uses a Chimchar to power her hot air balloon with Flamethrower. It reappeared in the ending credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

In DPS01, Professor Rowan presented a Chimchar to Shinko as one of the first partner Pokémon for her to pick. A situation similar to Following A Maiden's Voyage! occurred, with Chimchar and Piplup starting a fight, leading to a window breaking and Chimchar and Piplup escaping. They were then captured by an Ariados's web before being rescued by Shinko and Dawn.

In Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad, a Chimchar was living in a forest.

Trivia
Trivia
* Chimchar is the only starter Pokémon in the Human-Like.
* Chimchar shares its category with Grookey. They are both known as the Chimp Pokémon.
* Chimchar, along with Cyndaquil, are the only two starter Pokémon that evolve at level 14. It is the lowest level starters evolve at. Coincidentally, both are the Fire-type choice in the regions introduced in an even-numbered generation.
* In Diamond and Pearl, if the player chooses Chimchar, the wild Starly can defeat it when Chimchar is at 4 HP, bypassing the red HP bar state (which would otherwise cause the Starly to flee). This causes the game to freeze. This has a combined 1.56% probability.
* Chimchar's color palette was changed slightly in HeartGold and SoulSilver, despite it being a non-Johto Pokémon. This also happened to Torterra, Registeel, Stunky, Skuntank, Glameow, Purugly, and Chatot.
** This cannot happen with Turtwig or Piplup, as Chimchar's base HP is the lowest of the three.
* Chimchar is the only unevolved non-legendary Fire Pokémon to be introduced in Generation IV.
* Chimchar and its evolutions were designed by Takao Unno.
* Chimchar is the only Pokémon to learn Quick Guard through breeding.
* Chimchar is the only non-Generation V Pokémon to learn Facade through level-up.
* Chimchar's Japanese name, Hikozaru, is an anagram of the first name of Hirokazu Tanaka, the composer of many opening and ending themes in anime.
* Without counting Eevee, Chimchar and its evolutionary line are the only starter line in the Brown color group. As well, the Chimchar line is only one of two Fire starter lines not to be in the Red color group (the other being the Cyndaquil line in the Yellow color group).

Origin
Origin
Chimchar appears to be based on a young chimpanzee. However, the markings on its rear without the flame, (plus facial markings on its evolutions) seem to indicate that it is more a cross between a chimpanzee and a young baboon.

It evolves into Monferno starting at level 14, which evolves into Infernape starting at level 36.

Along with Turtwig and Piplup, Chimchar is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Sinnoh available at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl.

Biology

A sleeping Chimchar — note the lack of a flame

Other
A Chimchar Egg (right) in the anime

Chimchar debuted in Following A Maiden's Voyage!, where it was teasing a Piplup after stealing food from it.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Chimchar is a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Trophy information

"A Chimp Pokémon. With a flaming tail, Chimchar is skilled in Fire-type moves. Its light body affords it the ability to scale steep cliffs and live atop rocky mountains. Some say that the fiery tail is fueled by gas made in its stomach. Not even rain can put out the flames, but Chimchar always puts out the fire when asleep. Chimchar evolves into Monferno."

Trivia

  • Chimchar shares its category with Grookey. They are both known as the Chimp Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, if the player chooses Chimchar, the wild Starly can defeat it when Chimchar is at 4 HP, bypassing the red HP bar state (which would otherwise cause the Starly to flee). This causes the game to freeze. This has a combined 1.56% probability.
    • This cannot happen with Turtwig or Piplup, as Chimchar's base HP is the lowest of the three.
  • Chimchar and its evolutions were designed by Takao Unno.[1]

Origin

Chimchar appears to be based on a young chimpanzee. However, the markings on its rear without the flame seem to indicate that it is more a cross between a chimpanzee and a young baboon.

Name origin

Chimchar may be a combination of chimp and char (to burn).

Hikozaru may be a combination of 火 hi (fire), 小 ko (small), 子 ko (child), and 猿 saru (monkey, ape).
