The player encountering the Rogue Mega-Evolved Victreebel

Rogue Mega Evolution (Japanese: 暴走メガシンカ Rampaging Mega Evolution) is a phenomenon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A where a mysterious power within Lumiose City causes wild Pokémon to Mega Evolve. There are 16 Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon that the player will encounter at various points in the game as part of the Main Mission. After defeating a Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon, the player will receive its corresponding Mega Stone.

History

Five years prior to Pokémon Legends: Z-A, during Pokémon X and Y, Lysandre activated the ultimate weapon to do his plan, but that caused Ange to awaken as well and unleash an energy known as "Mega Power". According to Vinnie, six months prior to the events of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, wild Pokémon began to Mega Evolve and go rogue at random due to the machine's Mega Power. Mega Pidgeot was the first Rogue Mega Evolution to be affected by this phenomenon. AZ and his Floette attempted to step in to battle the Pokémon, but he was unable to keep on top of the outbreaks due to his advanced age. Urbain/Taunie stepped in for AZ and battled with Floette and was inspired to create Team MZ in order to help deal with the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon.

Throughout the event of Legends: Z-A, the player and Team MZ encountered and defeated a total of 16 Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon. During "Mission: Operation Protect Lumiose," several Pokémon underwent Rogue Mega Evolutions after Hyperrouge Ange Floette went berserk. The player, with the help of their friends and allies, had to defeat these Pokémon to reach Zygarde. The Rogue Mega Evolution phenomenon came to an end with the destruction of Ange.

In the post-game, specifically during "Mission: The One That Takes," Vinnie will challenge the player to a rematch against a virtual simulation of Mega Victreebel, Mega Hawlucha, and Mega Tyranitar before facing Yveltal. After this, players can engage in rematches with the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon at any time to earn rewards and see how quickly they can complete them.

Boss Encounters

The player will initially be introduced to Rogue Mega Evolution boss encounters during the main storyline, when they must pacify a Rogue Mega-Evolved Absol. During this encounter the player will receive the Mega Ring, and AZ will temporarily loan the player his Lucario. After the player has won, the Absol will join the player. Obtaining the Absol is mandatory, and so it is the condition to unlock Box 32 of the Pokémon Storage System. Later, the Absol must be given the Absolite and used for the second battle with Urbain/Taunie.

Following this, Vinnie will notify Urbain/Taunie of Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon that have been detected in the city at certain points of the main storyline. Each time this occurs, Team MZ will hold a strategy meeting, in which the player will receive three main missions to pacify the Pokémon. For every group of missions, each encounter will be assisted by a different member of Team MZ.

Before the battle starts, the player's Pokémon will be fully healed. When the battle begins, the player and their ally are transported to a circular battlefield. The Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon can use moves against the player and other Pokémon, but not their ally. Some of those attacks will drop orbs of Mega Power in various sizes, which the player must collect in order to Mega Evolve their Pokémon. Eventually, the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon can prepare a more devastating special attack, which can be stopped with Plus Moves. If such an attack is stopped, the Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon will be stunned for a while, being unable to attack. Some Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon can summon other low-level Pokémon from their Evolution line as reinforcements.

If the player blacks out, they can choose to restart the battle, continue it with the previously dealt damage, or forfeit. If the player chooses to continue or restart the battle, their party will be fully healed.

Rematches

In Mission 41: "The One That Takes", the player must battle Victreebel, Hawlucha, and Tyranitar once again through Quasartico Inc.'s Rogue Mega Evolution Simulator 3000, in order to prepare for facing Yveltal. After this is done, the player may rechallenge any of the previously faced Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon bosses at any time. Unlike the original battles, the player must face the Pokémon on their own, without any assistance. After pacifying the Pokémon, Vinnie will record the time it took to beat them, and will give the player x3 Exp. Candy M as a reward.

Hyperrogue Ange Floette

Main article: Ange

Hyperrogue Ange Floette (Japanese: 超大暴走アンジュフラエッテ Extremely Rampant Ange Floette) is a transformation of AZ's Floette caused by Ange. The player must battle it in a similar fashion to the Rogue Mega Evolution boss encounters. The player battles a Blue Eternal Flower and a Red Eternal Flower on the ground, while Zygarde distracts the main black flower high up in the sky. After both the blue and red flowers are fainted, control will switch to Zygarde, who must use one of its signature moves to deal damage the black flower. The flowers will be revived, and control will switch back to the player to create another opening for Zygarde to attack. After the third phase, control switches to Zygarde for a final time, in which it must use Core Enforcer as a finishing move. Following this, Hyperrogue Ange Floette will make a final attempt to destroy Lumiose City. The player's pebble will turn into Zygardite, and Zygarde will Mega Evolve. As Zygarde, the player must use Nihil Light to stop the attack and end the Rogue Mega Evolution phenomenon for good.

Zygarde

Although Zygarde does not undergo Rogue Mega Evolution, a very similar battle system is used for the battle with it during Mission 42: "To Keep the World in Balance". The battle has three phases, with Zygarde assuming each of its three Formes. As with Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon, Zygarde can be temporarily stunned, but it will not drop orbs of Mega Power. Once Zygarde transforms to Complete Form, it will prioritise attacking the player, and can release an area-of-effect blast if the player gets too close to it.

Zygarde has three special attacks that it will can use:

  • Thousand Arrows: Used in all three phases. A shower of arrows will rain down upon the targeted area. The player can avoid the attack by simply running or dodging out of the way.
  • Land's Wrath: Zygarde will charge in the center of the arena before unleashing this attack.
    • When facing 50% Forme, the ground beneath the player will start to crack, before exploding seconds later. The player can avoid the attack by running in a circle around Zygarde.
    • When facing Complete Forme, the cracks and explosions will initially occur in a large circle spanning the entire outer edge of the arena, rapidly working inwards towards the center, before starting from the outer edge again. The player can avoid the attack by running to the barriers at the very edge of the arena, where a tiny area will be safe from the explosions.
  • Core Enforcer: Zygarde will teleport outside of the arena, and leap into the air to Mega Evolve. Using a laser from its cannon, it will draw a Z-shaped pattern across the entire arena. The laser will damage anything that comes into contact with it. The ground of the arena will starting glowing green, and will explode within seconds. Facing Zygarde when it leaves the arena, the player must immediately get to a small safe zone on the very left or right side, as the power of the explosion will cause an instant black out.

After defeating Zygarde Complete Forme, L will prompt the player to throw a Poké Ball to catch Zygarde. The catch rate is 100%, making this a guaranteed catch.

Lumiose City in Crisis

In the climax of the main storyline, Ange will awaken and cause wild Pokémon across Lumiose City to undergo Rogue Mega Evolution. As the player traverses the ruined streets to reach Zygarde, they will be forced to battle some of these Pokémon. Unlike the previous encounters, these all take place as regular wild Pokémon battles (though the Pokémon cannot be captured). The player will be assisted by characters from the various organizations they have encountered throughout the game. Each ally will Mega Evolve their ace Pokémon at the start of the battle.
