Hamber (Japanese: ハンベル Hambel[2]) is the former second-in-command of the Explorers, as well as Gibeon's personal butler. He is a recurring major antagonist in Pokémon Horizons: The Series up to the Rayquaza Rising arc.
After the events of Where the Adventure Leads, Hamber was demoted and started acting as a double agent against Spinel, the new leader of the Explorers, which led him to become an ally of the Rising Volt Tacklers.
History
Pre-series

Years prior to the series, Hamber was an adventurer and became friends with another one, Diana, even travelling together sometimes. However, they became estranged to each other as time went on. Sometime after moving away from Diana, Hamber became lost and aimless in his path as an adventurer, but he met Gibeon, who guided Hamber and persuaded him to join the Explorers. In gratitude for Gibeon's guidance, Hamber became one of Gibeon's most loyal subordinates.
Hamber was also in charge of taking care of Gibeon's young grandson, Amethio, after the death of the boy's mother. Hamber and Amethio became very close, with Amethio considering Hamber a father figure. As a high-ranking member of the Explorers, Hamber became responsible for finding and training new talent for the organization. He first trained and coached Amethio, then found Coral, Sidian, and Chalce and coached each of them in sequence. In Charcadet's Wish, it was revealed that Hamber personally assigned Zirc and Onia in their early days as Explorers to act alongside Amethio.
At some point in the past, he told his boss about a mysterious pendant that his friend Diana possessed. Hamber returned to her, wanting to introduce Diana to Gibeon, who he said had the answers she was looking for. However, Diana saw through his words, as Hamber bringing along a group of subordinates immediately signaled to her that Hamber was working for an organization who was after the pendant, and she subsequently escaped. Later, Hamber found out that Diana no longer possessed the pendant as she gave it to her granddaughter, Liko. Upon learning this, he forged a letter written under Diana's name and sent Amethio, alongside his two subordinates Zirc and Onia, to visit Liko at Indigo Academy with the intention of having her hand over the pendant.
Pokémon Horizons: The Series
Hamber debuted in The Treasure After the Storm!, communicating with Amethio regarding Liko's pendant.
In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, Hamber received Amethio's report on his unit's unsanctioned activity pursuing the Rising Volt Tacklers in Galar. Upon learning of the mysterious Pokémon that had emerged from the pendant, Hamber recruited Coral and Sidian to accompany him to the region, as he wished to see it directly for himself. In the following episode, Hamber told Coral and Sidian to stay behind until he needed them. Hamber then reunited with Diana as he tried to prevent her escape, but failed. After the Rising Volt Tacklers escaped, Hamber reported to Gibeon.

In Roar of the Black Rayquaza, Hamber was asked by Amethio to train him in order to become stronger, following a defeat at the hands of the Black Rayquaza. In the following episode, they had a battle, with Hamber's Dusknoir facing off against Amethio's Ceruledge. Once Ceruledge started to overpower Dusknoir, Hamber pulled out a Tera Orb and Terastallized Dusknoir into a Ghost type, winning the battle as a result. After the battle, Hamber gave Amethio a Tera Orb.
As revealed in Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!, after Amethio was put on probation by Gibeon for having helped Liko, which, in actuality, had been plotted out by Spinel, Hamber began suspecting and investigating what had exactly happened, which put him under the radar of Spinel and Chalce.
In The Truth Revealed!, Hamber rescued Amethio, Zirc, and Onia, and returned their Pokémon to them after they were caught by Spinel's security guards. At Amethio's mansion, Hamber informed the group of how he met and worked for Gibeon, how he mentored and trained Amethio, Coral, Sidian, and Chlace, with Spinel as the exception, as well as talking about Gibeon's past with Lucius and Rystal, from his boss' point of view. He expressed similar views to Amethio in suspecting Spinel of intending to betray Gibeon to steal the Laquium crystals for himself. He then bid the group farewell as they headed to Laqua.

In Following Traces of Laquium, one year after the events in Laqua, Hamber revealed that he received a report from Spinel, who had become the president of Exceed, that Amethio had betrayed Gibeon and that both of them had died in Laqua. Hamber did not believe Spinel's report, however, and secretly entrusted Amethio's subordinates, Zirc and Onia, with a mission to find Amethio and the White Zygarde, entrusting them with a Zygarde Cube and the lone Zygarde Cell to do so. In Charcadet's Wish, Hamber was finally informed that Amethio was safe and well, after Zirc and Onia, aided by Liko, managed to track him down. Happy with the news, Hamber began to cry, unaware that he was being monitored by Chalce.
In Friends as Two, Me and You, it was revealed that Hamber and Diana reconciled on their own terms over the last year. After traveling to the land of Kitakami and catching an unknown wild Pokémon together, which would be revealed to be a Pecharunt in Mochi Mayhem!, Hamber revealed to Diana what he knew about Spinel's plans, such as the whereabouts of the Six Heroes. Together, they agreed that the key to defeating Spinel's plans laid with Amethio and Liko, who carried Gibeon and Lucius's dreams within them. Later, in a conversation with Chalce, Spinel revealed that he knew all of Hamber's movements and that one of his goals was to put an end to all possible threats to his plans. In the following episode, it was revealed that Hamber contacted Diana again, but was unable to go much further because Hamber realized he was being spied on.
In The Six Heroes Unleashed!, Hamber met Dot of the Rising Volt Tacklers and requested her help in rescuing Cervantis, who had been imprisoned by the Explorers. When the duo was confronted by Chalce, Hamber intended to battle her but backed down when Chalce reminded him of the consequences of taking up arms against her: expulsion from the Explorers, which would leave him unable to continue acting as a double agent for Amethio. Hamber briefly questioned Chalce's motives, bringing up her title as a teacher, leaving her emotionally shaken and leading her to reveal that she is merely cooperating with Spinel as a necessary end for her own goal. After Dot defeated Chalce in battle herself, she and Hamber were able to rescue Cervantis. In the next episode, Hamber, Dot and Cervantis reached the Explorers base near Manpūku Town too late to save Amethio, Liko, Roy, and Ult from being decisively defeated by five of the Six Heroes under Indi and Rubina's control. Once the battle concluded, Amethio and Cervantis repaired their relationship, much to Hamber's approval. Hamber then decided to accompany Amethio and Cervantis in their search for more Zygarde Cells, and bid farewell to Liko's group for the time being.
In HZ130, Hamber traveled to the Explorers HQ at Mount Pericarp. He attempted to convince Chalce, Coral, and Sidian to turn against Spinel, showing his concern about the Strong Spheres destroying bonds between Trainers and Pokémon, but to no avail, resulting in a battle of Hamber against the three of his former students. Despite the use of Trick Room and dominating most of the battle, Hamber's Dusknoir and Mow Rotom were defeated by Chalce's Medicham. Hamber then revealed his newly caught Bloodmoon Ursaluna, which he met and battled in Kitakami. Ursaluna managed to defeat Coral's Glalie and Sidian's Garganacl, leaving Medicham on its own. After Chalce's surprising use of Mega Evolution, however, Ursaluna was defeated by Mega Medicham. Hamber noted how Chalce's use of Mega Evolution showed she still trusts in the bonds between her and her Pokémon, still trying to convince her to turn against Spinel once more, but she still ignored his pleas. Hamber managed to escape from being captured afterwards, thanks to Ursaluna, commenting how it was now up to Amethio and his allies to deal with the looming threat at hand.
In HZ132, Diana revealed that Hamber was responsible for rebuilding her castle, which had been destroyed by the Explorers over a year ago.

In HZ133, Hamber arrived in Laqua to save Dot, Nemona, and Penny from Indi and Rubina. The appearance of his Bloodmoon Ursaluna intimidated Indi and Rubina's Cofagrigus and Runerigus into stopping using Destiny Bond, giving Penny's Flareon a chance to finish them off and finally force them to retreat. Dot, Nemona, and Penny greeted Hamber, but he barely had time to introduce Ursaluna to the trio before a squadron of Explorers agents appeared to confront them. Hamber told the trio to move on deeper into Laqua while he took care of his new adversaries.
In HZ136, Hamber arrived to the center of Laqua where he finds out through Coral that Spinel merged with the Laquium Core. Hamber then teamed up with Diana to give Roy and Amethio time for their Mega-Evolved Legendary Pokémon to get charged up so they can destroy the Laquium Core's defenses with Coral, Chalce, and Sidian helping out as well. Hamber then witnesses the Laquium Core being destroyed for good. After the threat with Laquium was over, Hamber decided to leave the Explorers and go on a new adventure with Diana.
Character

Hamber is a loyal and respectful servant of the Explorers' leader Gibeon, who he credits with giving him direction in life as a younger man. He is close enough to Gibeon to have acted as the personal butler for Gibeon's family, and became a father figure to Gibeon's grandson Amethio following the death of the boy's mother and estrangement from his father Cervantis. In Charcadet's Wish, it was shown that Hamber genuinely cares for Amethio like a parent beyond their roles in the Explorers, to the point of being quite emotional about Amethio's well-being when he discovered that he was safe and well. This role of trusted servant is reflected in his work as the Explorers' second in command under Gibeon, often acting as a surrogate leader in Gibeon's stead.

Hamber is also a skilled Trainer, possesses a Tera Orb, and was responsible for training not only Amethio but Coral, Sidian, and Chalce, who he found and recruited into the Explorers on Gibeon's behalf. He is stern on his subordinates when they behave improperly in Gibeon's presence, but still generally shows concern for their well-being during dangerous operations. Some of the other Explorers members have observed his more apparent closeness to Amethio, which goes as far as training extensively with him and giving him a Tera Orb of his own. While he is particularly close with Amethio, he has also been observant of his other three subordinates, recognizing and respecting their talents and skills. He has at one point complimented Coral and Sidian on their respective strengths, namely Coral's boldness and adaptability and Sidian's composure and judgment, and additionally remarked on how Chalce has changed since she began working with Spinel.
Despite his loyalty to Gibeon, Hamber still retains a sense of curiosity from his past as an adventurer and is willing to indulge it at times. This was seen in Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, in which he traveled to Galar himself to investigate Terapagos's appearance instead of reporting Amethio's unsanctioned actions to Gibeon. Hamber may also decide to act against Gibeon's direct orders if he judges that doing so is in Gibeon's best interest; when Amethio, who had been suspended from all missions by Gibeon, was caught spying on Spinel's research at Exceed, Hamber rescued him. Instead of punishing him or reporting him to Gibeon, Hamber instead brought him, along with Zirc and Onia, to Amethio's childhood home and told them about Gibeon's past, motivating them to go to Laqua and try to intervene in Gibeon's mission before Spinel could take advantage of it.
Hamber does not share the same sense of loyalty to his new leader, Spinel, as he did with Gibeon. This is noted in the fact that Spinel was the only admin during Gibeon's tenure that he had never personally trained, creating a lack of familiarity and less trust between them, along with Spinel's attempts to constantly frame Amethio for various incriminating events, which Hamber had never believed due to the time he spent with Amethio. Hamber secretly acts behind Spinel's back as a result, taking actions such as recruiting Zirc and Onia as fellow double agents against Spinel within the Explorers, or reconciling with Diana and sharing updated Explorers intel with her as his form of recompense for her granddaughter Liko helping them find Amethio. For his own part, Spinel expected disloyalty from the individual who acted as Gibeon's second-in-command and Amethio's sympathetic ear and is secretly having Hamber's actions monitored. Through renewing his friendship with Diana, Hamber appeared to have renew his old interest in adventuring, and ultimately decided to leave the Explorers and resume travelling with her like they did when they were younger.
Calm and collected he may be at all times though, he isn't completely immune to being surprised, having reacted with comedic shock upon hearing from Diana that Pecharunt sees him like the old man who raised it back then. The event also shows him to a little bit sensitive at the mention of his old age.
