Centiskorch (Japanese: マルヤクデ Maruyakude) is a dual-type Fire/Bug Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

It evolves from Sizzlipede starting at level 28.

Centiskorch can Gigantamax into Gigantamax Centiskorch if it has the Gigantamax Factor for its Gigantamax form.

Biology

Centiskorch's head without any flames

Centiskorch is a flat, centipede-like Pokémon. It is red, with circular orange-yellow heat-generating organs on the underside of each section, while its dorsal side, along with its legs and mandible, are a darker shade of red. The head has an orange mark in the shape of an exclamation point on the top, and two bright yellow eyes with triangular red pupils. It has orange-yellow flames coming out of its head and rear, simulating antennae and telson. Centiskorch creates flammable gases by fermenting the food in its body, and then burns these gases through the heat-generating organs along its underside. This results in the overflowing flames on either end of its body, which can reach temperatures of almost 1,500 °F (800 °C).[1] In the manga, the flames on its head can turn off.

Due to its violent and belligerent nature, Centiskorch will attack anything that comes near it. When in battle, Centiskorch will rear up and use its long, hot body to attack, either by slamming its searing belly into opponents like a whip or constricting them with its body.[1] Scolipede is the natural predator or prey of Centiskorch, depending on who wins the territorial fight.

When Gigantamaxed, the number of segments and legs on Centiskorch's body increases, with a total of one hundred legs, allowing Centiskorch to move incredibly fast despite its immense size.[2] The underside of its body turns yellow, with light-yellow concentric circles inside each section of its body. The flames from its head and telson are larger and longer and have a lighter part at the center, similar to a "X". There are small diamond shapes that dot the topside of its body periodically. It retains the exclamation point on the top of its head, but its eyes are now red and white, with yellow irises. Three red clouds float above its telson.

Its firepower when Gigantamaxed increases, resulting in its internal temperature exceeding 1,800 °F (1,000 °C). The heat waves coming off of Gigantamax Centiskorch are hot enough to burn opponents and disturb the air currents to the point of causing storms to form.[2]

Gigantamax Centiskorch is the only known Pokémon capable of using the G-Max Move G-Max Centiferno.

Major appearances

Centiskorch debuted in Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!, under the ownership of Doug and the nickname of "Centy". It ended up Gigantamaxing after being hit by a stray beam of Dynamax energy, and it started attacking the town unexpectedly. Ash attempted to battle it with Pikachu, Dragonite, and Riolu, only for Leon to arrive and defeat it with his Charizard.

Trivia

  • Centiskorch has the tallest Gigantamax form.
  • Centiskorch and its Gigantamax form were designed by James Turner.[3][4] Turner also designed Gigantamax Centiskorch's attack pose.[5]
  • Despite the Scolipede and Centiskorch evolutionary families living in different parts of the Galar region, both Venipede and Scolipede's Pokédex entries speak of their hostile relationship with the latter family.

Origin

Centiskorch appears to be based on radiator coils and centipedes like Orphnaeus brevilabiatus, also known as fire centipede due to its bioluminescence. It may also be inspired by millipedes with the same ability, like the Sierra luminous millipedes. Additionally, it might also be based on the Ōmukade, a colossal centipede of Japanese myth, with the creature's legs described as resembling thousands of torches. The circular heat-generating organs on its body segments resemble stove burners, while its fire "mustache" could be inspired by Kabuto, a style of Japanese helmet.

Name origin

Centiskorch may be a combination of centipede and scorch.

Maruyakude may be a combination of 丸焼け maruyake (completely burned) and 馬陸 yasude (millipede), 百足 mukade (centipede), or ヤクデ Yakude (Sizzlipede).
