Spit Up (Japanese: はきだす Spit Up) is a damage-dealing Normal-type move introduced in Generation III.

The Pokémon who are able to learn this move are also able to learn the related moves Stockpile and Swallow, except Qwilfish, which cannot learn Swallow.

Effect

Generation III

This move will fail if the user has not used Stockpile. If Spit Up is used after stockpiling, Spit Up inflicts damage to the target and has no secondary effect. Its power is equal to 100 times the number of times Stockpile was used.

After Spit Up is used (even if the opponent protects itself from Spit Up), the stockpile count will be reset.

Spit Up cannot cause a critical hit, and its damage is not varied by a random factor during damage calculation.

Spit Up can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 4 bonus appeal points if Stockpile was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV

Now that Stockpile increases the user's Defense and Special Defense, Spit Up now removes any Defense and Special Defense boosts gained through Stockpile. However, it simply will say the effect wore off without showing the stats changing, unlike Stockpile.

Spit Up can now cause a critical hit, but its damage is still not varied by a random factor during damage calculation.

Generation V onwards

The Stockpile removal is now shown as a stat change. For each Stockpile that successfully changed a defensive stat, that stat will drop by two stages if the Pokémon has Simple at the time of using Spit Up, rise by one stage if the Pokémon has Contrary at that time, or drop by one stage with any other ability. Stockpiles that did not result in stat changes (most likely because the stat was already maxed out) are not taken into account for this adjustment, but Stockpiles that resulted in stat changes which were later erased by a move such as Haze or Clear Smog are.

Damage done by Spit Up is now varied by a random factor during damage calculation.

Spit Up can be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, giving an extra three appeal points if Stockpile was used in the prior turn.

Trivia

  • After using Stockpile three times, Spit Up has the highest base power of all Normal-type moves, surpassing even Explosion.
  • Due to a glitch in Generation IV, when a Pokémon performs the Spit Up animation, its sprite is translated right by two pixels.
