Route 111 is a lengthy north-south route located in central Hoenn. Its northern terminus is at Route 113 near Mount Chimney and its southern terminus is in Mauville City. The route itself covers many different climates, transitioning seamlessly from forest at its southern point to desert and, later, mountains.

Route description

After departing Route 113, Route 111 maintains the east-west alignment of Route 113 for a short length before turning south near a pair of loamy soil patches. In this area, trainers can receive a Razz Berry from a girl, restore the vitality of their party at a location known as the Old Lady's Rest Stop, and battle Cool Trainer Brooke, the first of 12 trainers along this route. To the north of the rest stop, there is a Mach Bike ledge, the first of two along Route 111 that allows access to an upper cliff.

Heading south and, likewise, downhill on the lower portion of the route, the next point of interest is a boy located near a large tree. By talking to him, trainers will receive TM43 (Secret Power). Continuing along, Route 111 intersects the northern terminus of Route 112 just to the southwest of the large tree. Cool Trainer Wilton is also located at this junction. From here, trainers can turn west onto Route 112 towards the Fiery Path or, if they have the Go-Goggles, continue south into the desert.

Desert

In the desert, there are no less than five trainers in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and a whopping nine trainers in Pokémon Emerald that are waiting to battle, with most of them using Pokémon accustomed to the desert conditions, such as Sandslash. Along the most straight-forward path between the termini of Route 112 at either end of the desert, there are no notable items in Ruby and Sapphire. However, by venturing into the Pokémon-infested sand of the desert, trainers can reach the other Mach Bike path at the north end of the desert, as well as access the Desert Ruins.

In Ruby and Sapphire, the northeast corner of the desert is home to a pair of rare fossils, the Root Fossil and the Claw Fossil. Trainers can take one of the two to be resurrected; however, the one that is not chosen will sink into the desert and will be lost forever. But, in Emerald, the Mirage Tower occasionally appears northeast of the southern terminus of Route 112. At the top there can be choosed a fossil, but when taken, the tower will colapse and the other fossil will sink in the sand (Like the previous games), but can be recupered later in the game.

At the southern end of the main path through the desert is the southern end of Route 112, as well as another trainer. To the far south of this area, the route takes on a forested appearance as it begins to snake to the southeast. Along the way, trainers can battle the news team of Gabby and Ty, who makes occasional appearances on Route 111 as well as Routes 118 and 120. To the southeast of the duo is a blockade of crumbling rocks that can be eliminated using Rock Smash.

Southern Segment

South of the blockade, the route returns to a north-south alignment as it passes the only water area along the route. On the shore of the pond is the Winstrate Family house. At this location, trainers are put to the test, being forced to battle all four members of the family back-to-back with no reprieve in between to restore the vitality of their Pokémon. The player faces the four in the following order: Victor, Victoria, Vivi, and Vicky. When a trainer completes the task and defeats the family, they are given a Macho Brace by Victoria Winstrate.

Directly east of the Winstrate house in Emerald is Trainer Hill, a complex designed to test the mettle of trainers from around Hoenn.

South of this location, the route travels south before curving to the west and returning to the south as it enters downtown Mauville.

Trivia

  • Route 111 is, for all intents and purposes, an exact mirror of Route 119: its climate, situation, weather effects and wild Pokémon are all the reverse of Route 119's.
