Quotes

  • First battle:

"Young adventurer... Wouldn't you agree that explorations are the grandest of adventures? Your own wits! Your own strength! Your own Pokémon! And, above all, only your courage to lead you through unknown worlds... Aah, yes, indeed this life is grand! Grand, it is! Eh? I'm Brandon. I'm the Pyramid King, which means I'm in charge here. Most people call me the chief! You coming here means you have that much confidence in yourself, am I right? Hahahah! This should be exciting! Now, then! Bring your courage to our battle!"

"That's it! You’ve done great! You've worked hard for this! Hahahah! Grand it was! Grand, yes, indeed! Well done! You've earned recognition! Your Frontier Pass, please! Young explorer! I look forward to our next meeting! "

  • Second battle:

"...You've finally returned, young explorer... Your love for adventure seems to come deep from within your heart... Yes... You are exactly as I was in my own youth... ... ... ...Ah... The passionate! The dangerous! The desperate! Those days of death-defying, life-affirming adventures are back... Now, then! I sense my courage is off the meter! Everything you have! I'm braced for it all!"

"That's it! You've done it! You kept working for this! Hahahah! Remarkable! Yes, it's grand, indeed! Young explorer! You've bested me through and through! Here! I want you to have this! Ah, yes! It just goes to show that I have much to learn still! May our paths cross again! Farewell for now, young explorer!"

In the anime

Brandon in the anime

He is shrouded in mystery for most of the Battle Frontier saga. Unlike the other Frontier Brains, his silhouette is not shown on its own during the opening and is only seen in the center of the group shot. Trainers will only find out the location of the Battle Pyramid after they have collected the other six symbols. This may mean that Brandon ranks higher than the rest of the Frontier Brains, although in the video games and manga this position belongs to Anabel. When Ash finally gets his sixth Frontier Symbol in Second Time's the Charm!, he learns that it is located near Pewter City.

His first battle with Brandon occurred in Battling the Enemy Within!. However, Ash was possessed by an ancient king of the Pyramid who battled Brandon's Regirock with Ash's Sceptile. Sceptile unfortunately was defeated, though Ash eventually regained control of his body and the Pyramid was moved to an area near the Indigo Plateau.

For their second battle in Overjoyed!, Ash's Torkoal squared off against Brandon's Registeel. However, Torkoal too was defeated by Brandon's legendary Pokémon.

Ash and co. met up with Brandon in a forest, in Gathering the Gang of Four. In Pace - The Final Frontier!, Brandon and Ash fought in a 4 vs 4 battle. Brandon's Dusclops defeated Ash's Charizard in the first round, but was then defeated by Ash's Bulbasaur. Then, Brandon's Ninjask squared off against Ash's Squirtle. Squirtle was able to beat Ninjask with a Hydro Pump. In the next round, Squirtle was defeated by Brandon's Solrock, which on its turn, drew with Bulbasaur. With both competitors left to their last Pokémon, Ash used his Pikachu while Brandon unveiled yet another Pokémon from his legendary army—this time, a Regice. Pikachu however, managed to hold its own against the legendary golem and came out victorious, becoming only the second Pokémon in the anime to have defeated a legendary Pokémon, after Charizard.

Brandon appears again in A Pyramiding Rage! where he wanted to research about the Snowpoint Temple. While meeting up with Ash and friends he is challenged to a full battle by Paul. Paul loses the match easily due to him losing control of his emotions. Brandon later mentions that they would battle again when Paul is ready.

In Pillars of Friendship, Brandon tries and fails to stop Pokémon Hunter J from disturbing Regigigas in the Snowpoint Temple and it then goes on a rampage. It eventually calms down when Brandon saves it from being turned into a statue by J. Brandon then decides to stay at the Snowpoint Temple not only to rebuild it but also allow Regirock, Regice, and Registeel to become the new pillars that protect Regigigas.

Brandon used Regirock against Ash during their first battle while Ash was posessed by the King of Pokélantis. Regirock went up against Sceptile and won despite the type-disadvantage. Regirock later sent Team Rocket blasting off along with Registeel during Ash and Brandon's second rematch.

Regirock was used in the full battle against Paul and was able to easily defeat his Hariyama, Electabuzz, Ursaring, and Magmar.

Registeel

After the Kanto Grand Festival, Ash was finally allowed a rematch against Brandon, which was once again a one-on-one battle. Brandon used Registeel while Ash used his Torkoal. The two fought hard, and although Registeel was left extremely weak after the battle it was Torkoal who was defeated. Registeel later sent Team Rocket blasting off alongside Regirock.

During the full battle against Paul, it was easily able to stand up to his Magmar's Fire-type moves and defeated Paul's Nidoking despite taking damage from its ground-type attacks.

Regice
Brandon's Regice
Main article: Brandon's Regice

After his first three Pokémon were defeated, Brandon sent out his newly-caught Regice against Pikachu. Regice fought its hardest against the Mouse Pokémon and although things looked bad, Pikachu was able to whittle down its strength with Iron Tail and Volt Tackle was enough to bring it down.

During the full battle against Paul, Regice battled Ursaring, and was able to defeat his Lairon with almost no trouble.

Dusclops
Brandon's Dusclops

Dusclops was the first Pokémon used by Brandon during his second rematch and proved to be very powerful, being able to take down Ash's Charizard before being defeated by Bulbasaur's SolarBeam.

Dusclop's known attacks are Will-O-Wisp, Confuse Ray, Mean Look, and Shadow Punch.

Ninjask
Brandon's Ninjask

Ninjask was the second Pokémon used by Brandon during his second rematch against Ash where it went up against his Squirtle. Despite a closely fought battle, Ninjask couldn't stand up to Squirtle's Skull Bash and was defeated.

Ninjask's known attacks are Aerial Ace, Sandstorm, Double Team, and Sand-Attack.

Solrock
Brandon's Solrock

Brandon used Solrock third in the second rematch against Ash, and it was able to defeat his Squirtle. After knocking the Tiny Turtle Pokémon out of the match, it then went up against Bulbasaur. The two fought hard for their trainers, eventually knocking each other out of the battle.

Solrock's known attacks are Psywave, Confusion, Shadow Ball, and SolarBeam.

Befriended

Regigigas
Brandon's Regigigas

Many centuries ago, Regigigas helped to protect Snowpoint City from a volcanic eruption, and slept inside Snowpoint Temple. There it rested until Pokémon Hunter J destroyed the pillars sealing it, attempting to capture it for a client. Regigigas awakened and went on a rampage threatening Snowpoint City, and after battling Regirock, Registeel, and Regice was able to bring them under its control.

All seemed lost until J tried to capture Regigigas again and Brandon and his Regis all risked their lives to protect it, getting petrified by J's bracelet in the process. After J left due to her client canceling the deal, it restored the ones who protected it to life and then went back to sleep, with Brandon promising to help rebuild the temple and leaving his Regis to protect it from any others who would try to harm it.

Regigigas's known attacks are Hyper Beam, Confuse Ray, and Hidden Power.

Brandon in the Pokémon Special manga

Brandon took witness to Emerald's battle with Noland and immediately refined his facility for him, just in case. He seems to carry a special dislike for Emerald, but treats him fairly - explaining the rules of the Battle Frontier and showing off his Pokémon to the boy before the challenge. He expects Emerald to be tired out during their confrontation, but is surprised to see that Emerald used a Phanpy's Pickup ability to collect enough items to keep his team refreshed. Brandon says he favors one-hit knockout moves, like Explosion.

Trivia

  • Brandon tends to yell "Nooo!!" (Japanese: 喝!! Katsu!!) when he disapproves of something in the anime.
  • Whenever Brandon sends out a Pokémon in the anime, he first calls out the Pokémon's name and then shouts "I need your assistance!"
  • Brandon is the only character in the anime to officially own Pokémon that have been deemed legendary.
  • He is also the only character to have been challenged 3 times (including the non-official battle with the Ancient King) by Ash before being defeated. In terms of the number of the battles with Ash, he is one of few known Trainers to have battled Ash more than twice, the other three being Clair, Paul and Gary. They also battled Ash thrice, although in Clair's case, the first two official Gym battles were interrupted.
  • Both of the teams that he uses in Pokémon Emerald are made up of the members of a legendary trio found in the Generation III paired versions. Coincidentally, both trios can also be found in Platinum, but not in Diamond and Pearl.
