Mallow (Japanese: マオ Mao) is a student at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island and one of Ash's classmates. She made her debut in Alola to New Adventure!.
History
Mallow first appeared in Alola to New Adventure! while riding a Ride Tauros with her classmates Lana and Sophocles at the Pokémon School. She accidentally ran over Ash when he stumbled upon the school and, mistaking him for a new student, introduced him as such to her principal, Samson Oak. After the misunderstanding was cleared up, she decided to show Ash around the campus, showing him to her teacher, Professor Kukui, along the way. She then witnessed Ash join Kiawe in a scuffle against some Team Skull Grunts, and was amazed by his and Pikachu's battle skills. Shortly after the battle, Ash saw the guardian deity Tapu Koko in the sky, but it flew off before Mallow and the other students could see it.
In The Guardian's Challenge!, Mallow threw Ash a surprise welcome party, acting as referee in a series of games between him and the other students.
In First Catch in Alola, Ketchum-Style!, Mallow continued to accompany Ash in his attempts to catch a Pokémon and was present when he caught his Rowlet.
In A Seasoned Search!, she revealed that her number one goal was to make the Aina's Kitchen the best in the world. In order to accomplish this, she had to recreate a special recipe to attract more customers, but the key ingredient, Yellow Nectar, was out of season. After unsuccessfully using Pikachu's Thunderbolt as a substitute, she set off in search of an Oricorio to help find the Yellow Nectar. During a fight with Team Rocket, who tried to steal the Yellow Nectar, Bounsweet evolved into Steenee, and she successfully recreated the secret recipe.
In Mallow and the Forest Teacher!, Mallow had enough of being overworked by her father at the Kitchen, and ran away. She tripped on a rock and fell down a hill, injuring her knee. She was later found by an Oranguru, who helped her recover. Later, when Team Rocket captured her Steenee, Oranguru helped save her just as Abe and her friends arrived. As Abe recognized the Oranguru from his past, Mallow reconciled with him and returned home.
From Family Determination! to 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight!, Mallow was among those who helped Lillie and Gladion in their mission to rescue their mother Lusamine after Lusamine was kidnapped by the Ultra Beast Nihilego. In Ultra Deep Sea, her Steenee, along with Ash's Litten and Rowlet, and Lana and Sophocles's Pokémon, fought and overcame Lusamine's Mismagius, Milotic, and Lilligant, which were under Nihilego's control. The battle ended when Ash and Pikachu performed 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt to defeat Nihilego, freeing Lusamine from its grasp.
In The Professors' New Adventure!, Mallow attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet. During the post-nuptials, Lusamine asked Mallow and her classmates to join the Ultra Guardians, a task force dedicated to dealing with any upcoming Ultra Beast incidents, which they accepted.
In A Mission of Ultra Urgency!, Mallow and her classmates set out on their first Ultra Guardians mission. They were tasked with capturing a Buzzwole that emerged from an Ultra Wormhole onto Melemele Island, where it began causing havoc. During the mission, Mallow helped heal a wild Snorlax that was drained of its energy by the Ultra Beast. Eventually, Buzzwole was distracted by Kiawe's flexing long enough for Ash to capture it in a Beast Ball. Afterward, Buzzwole was released and returned to its home thanks to a wormhole opened by Lusamine's team.
In SM069, Mallow and her classmates traveled to Bamboo Hill to see a mysterious creature that Sophocles had discovered the night before. Together, the group unsuccessfully tried to dig it up. The next day, Lusamine revealed the creature was actually an Ultra Beast named Celesteela and set the Ultra Guardians off to return it back home. Attempts to catch Celesteela in a Beast Ball proved unsuccessful as it was firmly rooted down. Team Rocket later attempted to catch Celesteela, forcing the Ultra Guardians to protect it as Celesteela began to launch into the air. After creating an area for Celesteela to launch safely without setting the immediate area ablaze, they watched it fly home.
In SM072, Mallow prepared to enter the Alola Bread Festival with her father. Due to Abe's back problems, he couldn't enter, but Mallow was saved by the arrival of her brother, Ulu. Together, they entered the competition, but an incident led to Ulu accidentally losing the Berries they were going to use to a Snorlax. With the assistance of her friends and Steenee, Mallow successfully made sweet bread without the Berries, successfully winning the competition. However, by that point, Ulu had left to go on another journey.
In SM078, Mallow and her classmates watched a fireworks show. The show was interrupted by a strange creature that used its exploding head to create a fireworks show of its own. The next day, the Ultra Guardians were called down by Lusamine, who revealed the creature from before was the Ultra Beast Blacephalon. The Ultra Guardians set off to find Blacephalon, but their efforts to track it down only led to a different Ultra Beast, later named Xurkitree by Lusamine. When Blacephalon and Xurkitree met, they began doing flashy performances in an attempt to outdo the other. Worried that serious trouble could arise if the competition kept escalating, the Ultra Guardians combined the attacks of their partner and Ride Pokémon into a giant firework that distracted the Ultra Beasts long enough for Ash to make them flinch with Lycanroc's Splintered Stormshards. After Blacephalon and Xurkitree were captured, they were released back to their respective homes.
Character
Mallow is an upbeat and friendly girl who gets along well with her classmates at the Pokémon School. She admits herself to be so energetic that she sometimes misses important details and jumps to the wrong conclusions. She is shown to have a firm sense of right and wrong, such as her distaste for Team Skull's bullying of other students. Much like Brock, Cilan, and Clemont, she is also a talented cook for both people and Pokémon, and is a self-proclaimed poster girl at her family's restaurant, Aina's Kitchen.
Mallow is shown to be very good friends with Lillie. This was demonstrated in Lillie's Egg-xhilarating Challenge!, when she completed her chores early and headed over to see how she was getting on with the Egg; in Getting to Know You!, when she dragged Ash along to see how she and Snowy were getting along; and in Lulled to La-La Land!, when she defended Lillie after Rotom accused her of being the culprit for making everyone hungry.
Mallow is also supportive of Lana. This was demonstrated in They Might Not Be Giants!, when she showed up to watch how Popplio's balloons were doing and explained to Rotom why Lana was acting the way she was whenever she was separated from Popplio. This was seen again in Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!, when she showed up to watch how her and Popplio perform Hydro Vortex.
