This is a list of Pokémon families including evolutions from different generations. For example, Pichu (a Generation II Pokémon) evolves into Pikachu (a Generation I Pokémon). A few of these Pokémon, as a result of new evolutions, become a part of evolutionary families with branched evolutions.

Staring with Generation VII, several old Pokémon families were modified by introducing regional forms of older Pokémon adapted for life in different regions. While regional forms of the same family are always related via breeding, families entirely consisting of regional variant forms of the exact same species are not considered to be in the scope of this page.

Entries in each section are listed in ascending order based on the lowest National Pokédex number among the family members.

Common state and new species

These evolutionary families have received actual new Pokémon species introduced at some point after the debut of the earliest members that either evolve into or evolve from preexisting states. In other words, these families have at least one instance where a Pokémon can evolve into a state introduced in a different generation and the two species in question also debut in different generations.

Common state only

These families received new regional forms of existing members that can be evolved into from a common unevolved state but no actual new species. All of these are also evolutionary families with branched evolutions.

New species only

These families consist of evolutionary lines with regional variant forms that do not share common unevolved state with other forms of the species involved and do not have states introduced in different generations on each line. However, certain Pokémon species will only evolve from a specific regional form and, therefore, have no counterpart. As such, these cases do not have cross-generational evolutions in the sense where a specific Pokémon can evolve into a state introduced in a different generation but rather these families have member species introduced in different generations.

Trivia

  • Pokémon which evolve into a Pokémon of a previous generation, instead of from it, are always baby Pokémon.
    • Conversely, the only baby Pokémon introduced alongside their evolved form are Togepi, Riolu, and Toxel; the rest were introduced in generations after their evolved form was.
  • Generation IV introduced the most evolutionary relatives to Pokémon from previous generations, with 29, and Generation VI introduced the fewest evolutionary relatives to Pokémon from previous generations, with only one, Sylveon. Generation V did not introduce any evolutionary relative to Pokémon from previous generations.
  • Some cross-generational evolution families have unique distinctions:
    • Porygon is the only Pokémon to have an evolution introduced in a later generation that was later able to evolve once again.
    • The Tyrogue family is the only one to include Pokémon (Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan) that were introduced as not being related to each other in an evolutionary family.
    • The Scyther family is the only branched evolution family to have each member species introduced in a different generation.
    • The Chansey, Mr. Mime, Electabuzz, Magmar, and Porygon families are the only families to have each member of a three-stage evolutionary family introduced in a different generation.
    • Roselia is the only Pokémon to have both a pre-evolution and an evolution (Budew and Roserade, respectively) introduced in the same generation outside its debut generation.
    • The Pikachu and Mr. Mime families are the only families to have received both new member species and new forms of existing member species that share common unevolved state with other forms.
