Rotom can possess several objects, both usable in an dout of battle

Rotom is a species of Pokémon who is known to inhibit appliances, allowing to change form. These devices may often misbehave, but in some instances, may actually improve with a Rotom is possessing the device.

In the core series, Rotom is able to take form of five different devices (six, if it's base form, also called Rotom, is counted) when interacting with certain objects in either Rotom's Room or through the Rotom Catalog. During Rotom's initial debut in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, it can be encountered through a TV in the Old Chateau, having no distinguishing forms or transformations. Beginning in Pokémon Platinum, Diamond and Pearl's upper title, Rotom is able to take on the form of certain devices. Form this point onward, Rotom has been able to take on the appearances of these devices in various media including spin-off titles, the animated series, or even as tools and items in the core series.

Rotom

Rotom's base form, simply called "Rotom" is how it appears without assuming any appliance. Rotom can enter a device and take on its appearance, some of which will alter to adjust to Rotom's own, while others, such as a TV, do not acclimate any of Rotom's features. According to the Rotom Catalog, a Rotom would need to possess a lightbulb in order to return to its original form. These Rotom are Electric- and Ghost-type.

Appliances

Starting in Pokémon Platinum, Rotom can change form into one of six different forms by possessing certain appliances found within Rotom's Room and later the Rotom Catalog. Each appliance (titled using word followed by "Rotom") gain a new stat distribution as well as a new type and is able to learn a new move of the corresponding type. Prior to Pokémon Black and White, all forms of Rotom were Electric/Ghost type, similar to its base form. If Rotom's only known move is its special move and it changes to its default form, then the Rotom will learn Thunder Shock.

Since Pokémon Sword and Shield, the Rotom Phone has made numerous appearances in the core series, acting similar to that of the Rotom Dex. These Rotom are seldomly seen speaking however, and usually only appear in Trainer-related activities. They differ slightly, often adding an additional camera as the franchise has progressed. They can be customized with phone cases, changing the phone's appearance in color and sometimes shape. The player can hold onto a Rotom to prevent falling, and in Pokémon Legends: Z-A Roto Glide can be enabled to jump between roof tops.

A much wider variant is seen being owned by Mable, resembling that of a smart tablet. The device is not known by name in any media.

Rotom Bike

In Sword and Shield, the Rotom Phone can be placed on top of another item known as a Rotom Bike, allowing Rotom to power the bike similar to a motor bike. The bike has two forms, one to be used on land like an ordinary bike, and Water Mode, which turns some of the pegs into flotation devices allowing for water traversal.

Non-playable

In Pokémon Sword and Shield there are two Rotom they player may spot throughout the game. Rotomi is a Rotom possessing the PCs inside Pokémon Centers throughout the Galar region. Similar to an AI assistant, it helps users navigate the PC and use certain functions. The Drone Rotom appear almost exclusively in Galar's Rose and Gym Stadiums, acting as cameras for televised viewing.

In the spin-off games

Pokémon Tretta

A Rotom possessing an Tretta arcade cabinet was distributed as a Promotional Tretta for Pokémon Tretta as part of promotion for the Pokémon Tretta Fan Book. As most Tretta contain only a single type, this Rotom is a pure Ghost-type, lacking the Electric-type that Rotom would have in other media.
