Scopely Explore (Japanese: スコープリー・エクスプロア Scopely Explore) is an American game development team within Scopely best known for developing the augmented reality game Pokémon GO.

It was founded as Niantic Labs in 2010 as a startup within Google by John Hanke, who remained the company's CEO.[1] In August 2015, the company announced plans to become independent, which it did in October 2015, as Niantic, Inc.[2][3] Following the announcement of Pokémon GO in September 2015, the company announced it had received an investment of up to $30 million from The Pokémon Company, Nintendo, and Google.[4]

On March 12, 2025, Niantic, Inc. announced that they had sold their games business to the mobile game company Scopely for $3.5 billion. This purchase included the games Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom, and Monster Hunter Now, as well as the development teams for each.[5][6][7] Simultaneously, their geospatial AI business would be spun off into a new company called Niantic Spatial, Inc., led by John Hanke as CEO. The acquisition was completed on May 29, 2025, with Niantic, Inc. now operating their games and apps as a part of Scopely. On June 6, 2026, it was announced that the Niantic games team would be renamed to Scopely Explore.[8][9]
