Ryme City (Japanese: ライムシティ Ryme City) is the setting of the game Detective Pikachu, the game's sequel Detective Pikachu Returns, and the movie based on the game, POKÉMON Detective Pikachu. Its slogan is A Place of Harmony Between Humans and Pokémon.
Home to many people and Pokémon, the city is most famous for the annual Pokémon Carnival, its largest festival which attracts world-class ships such as the S.S. Prime Treasure to observe it. It is also connected by a ferry service which runs once a day to Cappucci Island. The Pokémon Comprehensive Laboratory, which researches the abilities of Pokémon and has developed various inventions, is located on a mountain pass to the east of the city.
Although its location relative to other regions is unknown, the mention of Pokémon Trainers, Pokémon Rangers, Pokémon Contests, and the Alola region indicate that it is located in the same world as the core series games.
Geography

Ryme City is a sprawling city with its boundaries extending beyond its central hub to surrounding less populated regions. The Ryme Mountains (Japanese: ライム山脈 Ryme Mountain Range) tower in the north, which are flanked by plains to the east and west. Its highest peak is Mt. Ryme at 1,995 meters. Two rivers (the Silver River (Japanese: シルバー川 Silver River) and Bitter River) border the fertile Ryme Plains (Japanese: ライム平野 Ryme Plains), while a third river (known as the Ryme or Kettle River (Japanese: ライム/ケトル川 Ryme/Kettle River)) merges into the Silver River. The rivers flow into the Salsus Sea (Japanese: サルサス海 Salsus Sea) which lies to the south of the city. The city ends at the Third Desert (Japanese: サードデザート Third Desert) to the west, although most of this desert lies within the borders of (Japanese: サーストタウン Thirst Town)[1].
The city is divided into five adminsitrative districts: Center Ryme (Japanese: センターライム地区 Center Ryme District), North End (Japanese: ノースエンド地区 North End District), East Highland (Japanese: イーストハイランド地区 East Highland District), South Water (Japanese: サウスウォーター地区 South Water District), and Fork Hand (Japanese: フォークハンド地区 Fork Hand District), as well as Cappucci Island (Japanese: カプチ島地区 Cappucci Island District). Center Ryme is built on the Ryme Plains, and is the primary business district of the city. As with other large cities, there are a number of transport options available in Ryme City, featuring a subway system, an international airport, and port (including the ship S.S. Prime Treasure)[1].
Ryme City experiences all four seasons with predominantly a maritime climate, with cool to warm summers and high humidity with rainfall in the summer. Northern parts of Ryme City have a more continental climite and its winters are colder, while Cappucci Island has its own subtropical climate[1]. A wide variety of Pokémon live in Ryme City due to its diverse topography and climate[2].
History

Settlements in the area initially formed 170 years ago, with (Japanese: ジェイムズ・マイヤーズ James Myers) being the first leader of the settlers. The name of the settlement was changed from Ryme Town to Ryme City after urban development efforts by James' son and the city's first mayor (Japanese: モーガン・マイヤーズ Morgan Myers). The Myers family has remained prominent in leadership positions, with Morgan's grandson (Japanese: ジョン・マイヤーズ John Myers) attracting large companies during his time as mayor through changes in the tax system and opening of the subway and airport. The current mayor Howard, John's son, has been involved with establishing Pokémon Friendship Week and the Pokémon Carnival, while also dealing with crime and a declining birth rate. The city's theme of co-existence between people and Pokémon has been present ever since the establishment of Ryme[2].

In the movie

Ryme City is the main setting of POKÉMON Detective Pikachu. Ryme City was founded by Howard Clifford as a utopia where humans and Pokémon could live and work together side by side. Unlike other regions, Pokémon do not live in the wild, and being a Pokémon Trainer, taking part in a Pokémon battle, and using Poké Balls are prohibited.
The aesthetics of Ryme City are based on a mixture of the real world cities of London, New York City, Tokyo, and Shanghai.[11]
Trivia
- In the Pokémon Today newspaper given away for free in Japan, Ryme City is romanized as "Lime City".
