Kofu (Japanese: ハイダイ Haidai) is a Gym Leader of Cascarrafa's Gym, known officially as the Cascarrafa Gym. He specializes in Water-type Pokémon. He hands out the Water Badge to Trainers who defeat him.

In the core series games

Kofu works as a chef, as well as a Gym Leader. Though he specializes in seafood cuisine, one of his students, Katy, reveals that he also knows how to bake. Kofu takes great pride in his cooking, using only the best of ingredients for his dishes. He is the head chef of his own restaurant, named the Kofu Lounge, in Cascarrafa. He has a warm, hearty, and jovial personality.[1] Whenever he is surprised, he usually exclaims, "Vaultin' Veluza!" He has an apprentice named Hugo, who is also a Gym Trainer. It is noted that his usual Gym Test is particularly challenging because he wants to help trainers grow, but it is not known what this test entails.

Kofu is first seen running out of his Gym when the player first approaches it. His Gym staffer reveals that he's heading to an auction at Porto Marinada, but he forgot his wallet due to being in a hurry, which she gives to the player to deliver to him. Once the player catches up with Kofu at Porto Marinada and returns his wallet to him, he tasks them on the spot with buying him some rare wakame seaweed from Hoenn at the auction as a completely impromptu Gym Test, giving them $50,000 to do so. After the player has bought the seaweed, they're allowed to keep whatever extra money they have left, while Kofu returns to Cascarrafa, where he can be properly challenged.

In addition to the Gym Badge, Kofu gives out TM022 (Chilling Water) after defeating him.

In The Indigo Disk, Kofu can be invited to act as a special coach at Blueberry Academy.

Pokémon Adventures

Kofu in Pokémon Adventures

Kofu debuted in PASV25. At Asado Desert, he and Saguaro found Violet and Arven in the middle of a battle with the dual Quaking Earth Titans, Great Tusk and Iron Treads. Saguaro explained that while on a trip to the Kofu Lounge, he saw Kofu leave to go help find a missing Treasure Eatery employee. They found and brought the employee to safety, but had to return to the area to find a left-behind Rotom Phone. Once Great Tusk was taken out, Kofu and Saguaro lent their aid by keeping Iron Treads in place long enough for Violet and Arven to defeat it as well. The four then enjoyed sandwiches made from the Sour Herba Mystica that the two Titans were guarding.

Later, Kofu was revealed to have been asked by Tulip to help search for stakes tied to shrines keeping the treasures of ruin sealed. Katy reported to Tulip that even though Kofu had searched near Cascarrafa, he wasn't able to find a single stake.

Pokémon

Pelipper
Kofu's Pelipper
Debut PASV25

Pelipper is Kofu's first known Pokémon. Kofu lent it to Violet so he could fly to a nearby watchtower Arven was hiding on top of. When Great Tusk found and attacked Arven, Violet had Pelipper strike with a Hydro Pump. This weakened Great Tusk enough for Violet and Arven to defeat it with their Pokémon.

Pelipper's only known move is Hydro Pump.

Wugtrio
Kofu's Wugtrio
Debut PASV25

Wugtrio is Kofu's second known Pokémon. It was first used alongside Saguaro's Hatterene to assist Violet and Arven battle the Titan Iron Treads. It used its multiple heads to keep Iron Treads from moving, giving Violet and Arven the opportunity to defeat it with a combined attack from their Pokémon.

None of Wugtrio's moves are known.

Main article: Kofu (Stellar Crown 138)

Kofu is introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Stellar Miracle expansion and the English Stellar Crown expansion, with artwork by Hideki Ishikawa. An ultra rare version with artwork by the same illustrator was released in the same sets. It lets the player put 2 cards from their hand on the bottom of their deck in any order, then draw 4 cards from the top of the deck. If the player has fewer than 2 other cards in their hand (excluding the Kofu card), the card cannot be played. The Kofu card also interacts with Crabominable and Veluza from the same expansion, referencing the Pokémon that Kofu uses in the games.

Trivia

  • Kofu's Japanese Gym Leader title is 激流料理人.
  • In the Japanese version of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Kofu says 「ウオーッ!」 whenever he is surprised. While this interjection can be transliterated directly as "Woah!", it also contains a pun on 魚 uo (fish).
