The festival

The Princess Festival (Japanese: ポケモンひなまつり Pokémon Girls' Festival) is a holiday celebrated annually throughout the Kanto region on March 3 (the date is not stated in the dub). It is the equivalent of the real-world Japanese holiday Hinamatsuri.

The festival

Like in the real world, it is traditional for girls to display a set of ornamental dolls representing the Emperor's Court. It is commemorated by various events, activities, and sales for girls only. During the Princess Festival, there are drastic discounts at stores and restaurants for women only.

The Princess Festival was featured in Princess vs. Princess. Misty and Jessie reminisced about past Princess Festivals, while competing for a prized Pokémon doll collection.

The Queen of the Princess Festival (Japanese: クイーンコンテスト Queen Contest) is an anime-exclusive, girls-only competition held once a year in O-Hina Town consisting a beauty pageant and of Pokémon battles.

Each Trainer must use exactly four Pokémon to battle. The contestants are split into two separate divisions, and the winner of each division proceeds to the finals. Additionally, every contestant wears a formal traditional Japanese outfit, usually a kimono and a hand-held fan. Before the actual competition, the contestants all stand in a row on stage as people gather to watch.

The prize for winning the contest is a brand new set of Pokémon Princess Dolls, and a photo with famous movie star Fiorella Cappuccino, who was also an announcer of the contest.

Misty and Jessie both entered the contest with borrowed Pokémon, with Misty borrowing Ash's Pikachu and Bulbasaur, as well as Brock's Vulpix, and Jessie borrowing James's Weezing. Jessie also had Meowth participating in the event under her command.

The two contestants made it all the way to the final round, where they had a fierce battle. In the end, despite Jessie using her new Lickitung as an unexpected fourth Pokémon, Misty emerged victorious with Psyduck, winning the Pokémon doll collection, which she later sent to her sisters at the Cerulean Gym.
