Dr. Fuji (Japanese: フジ博士 Dr. Fuji) is a character in the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. He is also featured in The Birth of Mewtwo.
History
After his daughter, Amber, died, Dr. Fuji devoted his life to trying to bring her back through the usage of cloning. His wife was distraught and could not continue watching his endeavors, insisting that he could not bring Amber back to life. She left him, yet Fuji still worked.
Eventually, his studies gained the attention of Giovanni, who said he would fund Fuji's project if Fuji also cloned the legendary Pokémon, Mew. This resulted in the creation of Mewtwo.
After the original Charmandertwo, Bulbasaurtwo, and Squirtletwo died during the experiment, Ambertwo—the cloned form of Amber—died as well, eliciting a heightened emotional response from Mewtwo. Dr. Fuji panicked and administered a form of emotion-suppressing serum to Mewtwo, which may have caused its seemingly-twisted personality. Time passed and Mewtwo matured, though shortly after gaining consciousness, it destroyed the lab on New Island, presumably killing everyone—including Fuji. A record of Fuji's final words survived the explosion, which Mewtwo ended up keeping, and was later discovered by Jessie, James, and Meowth, who had snuck into New Island.
Dr. Fuji was in charge of a team of scientists, however, whether they were his team before he was hired by Team Rocket or were provided by them remains unknown.

Dr. Fuji is likely based on the game character Mr. Fuji, who was formerly known as Dr. Fuji when he founded the Cinnabar Island Pokémon Lab.

Trivia
- In the novelization of the first movie, he was given the name of "Professor John Smith".
- Excluding his cloned daughter Ambertwo, who died in the radio drama The Birth of Mewtwo and The Uncut Story Of Mewtwo's Origin (which was added to the start of the first movie in later Japanese home video releases), Dr. Fuji is the first human to die in the anime.
- Dr. Fuji may have been inspired by Dr. Tenma from Astroboy, since both lost their child and attempt to recreate them through science, as well as share more than a passing resemblance.
