Azalea Town
Welcome to Goldenrod, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to Saffron in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts several major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. There is so much to do in the big city that it is easy to forget about a single shady character. But with a Rocket Grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to save the city sooner or later. But first thing's first, let's see the sights!

Goldenrod Department Store
Located just east of the Pokémon Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto. The behemoth building consists of eight floors, including the rooftop and basement, and has a wide array of items up for sale.

While there are no shops in the basement, you can take the elevator downstairs to take some items for free.

The Azalea Gym has undergone quite a few changes since the days of Gold and Silver.  This time around, the Gym is divided into three separate platforms (entrance, center, and rear), and Trainers must ride the spider-themed karts over webs made of rope to reach the Gym Leader.  It may seem confusing, but the karts will always make the first turn they come to.  To reach the first junior Trainer (Bug Catcher Al), step on the center kart; otherwise, take the left one to the center platform to fight Bug Catcher Benny.  To battle Bug Catcher Josh, flip the blue lever and step on the kart.  Ride the kart back to the center platform, and flip the blue switch again, before riding it to the northwest to fight Twins Amy & May.  Flip the blue switch by the twins, and ride the kart south, where you'll flip the red switch.  Step on the kart again to reach Bugsy at the rear of the Gym.

The TM Corner offers a handful of different TMs for sale. Some of these attacks are very powerful at this part of the game, so consider buying whichever TMs your Pokémon can learn. On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper who gives out 27 if your lead Pokémon is happy, and 21 if it is unhappy.

Also on 5F, there is a man who is hoping to trade his Machop for a Drowzee. Drowzee are common on Routes 34 and 35, and the Machop received in return will have an advantage at the Goldenrod Gym, and holds a Macho Brace which doubles effort value growth.

The Rooftop Atrium has vending machines that dispense tasty, cheap, health-restoring drinks. In addition, there is a raffle known as the Daily Drawing Corner that may be entered for pdollar300. First and second prizes change with the day, but third prize is always a random Berry chosen from a group of seven. You can enter as many times as you want each day.

Game Corner
At Goldenrod Game Corner, players can win coins by playing the new Voltorb Flip game. The game features a 5×5 grid of tiles, underneath which are numbers (which multiply the current score) and Voltorb (which Selfdestruct, dropping the score to zero). The total number of points and Voltorb in each set of five cards is noted on the edge of the field. The game advances to more difficult levels once all of the 2× and 3× multipliers have been found. Higher levels give the player a chance to win several hundred coins at a time, which can be redeemed for prizes. Talk to Mr. Game to receive a Coin Case, and start saving up!

Bill's House
Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the waterfront with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but since you are using his storage system, his sister gives out his phone number. Calling Bill is a useful way of checking the number of Pokémon stored in the current Box.
After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a Eevee from him.
Goldenrod Tunnel
The Goldenrod Tunnel runs north-south under the west side of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. The underground hallway houses three shops and a photo booth.

Bargain Shop
The northern Goldenrod Tunnel is only open on Monday mornings, from 4:00am to 9:59am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Each of these items may only be purchased once per week.

After his defeat, Bugsy awards you the Hive.  This badge commands obedience from all Pokémon of level 30 or less, and allows the use of Cut in the field.  He also gives you 89 as a prize.  Ride the karts back out of the Gym, and rest up.  Head west towards Ilex Forest, and you'll be stopped by that red-haired thief.

The Herb Shop, the southernmost shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are less expensive than their traditional counterparts. Heal up at the Poké Center after the battle, and head into the forest.
Name Rater
The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, he evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows the Trainer to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester
The Goldenrod City in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of your lead Pokémon. There are Friendship, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when happy with their Trainer. There are Friendship that can be done to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like Haircut brothers it, feeding it vitamins, or simply walking with it.

Bike Shop
The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but demand has not been very strong. Realizing that you have a lot of traveling to do, the owner offers to loan you a Bicycle in the hopes that the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up. Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers—everybody's happy!

Magnet Train Station
The Magnet Train Station is located next to the Radio Tower. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally travels between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The other major method of travel between regions—sailing on the S.S. Aqua—runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.

Radio Tower
The Radio Tower stands tall directly aside of the train station. Every day, the Pokémon Lottery Corner on 1F draws a lucky number. If this number matches the OT number of any of your Pokémon, then you win a prize! The grand prize is a Master Ball, while other prizes include a Max Revive, Exp. Share, PP Up, and Ultra Ball.

Speak to another woman behind the counter to play a promotional quiz game. Answer all five questions correctly to win a Pokégear for the Pokégear. Once installed, you can tune into the following programs.

Ilex Forest
After completing the quiz, the local Gym Leader will compliment you before returning to the Gym.

This large, shadowy forest is a natural maze.  It has become so overgrown in recent years that a handful of new trees have sprouted up, but one has chosen an inconvenient spot to grow, blocking the path north past the Ilex Shrine. Without 01, no Trainers can make it through the hardy forest.
Visit Buena in her second-floor studio to receive the Blue Card, which stores points earned from her password show. By amassing enough points, you can earn valuable Buena's Password.

Rescue the wily Farfetch'd
Global Terminal
The Global Terminal is located west of the Radio Tower. Inside, Trainers can interact with others from around the world. Trainers can trade, share pictures of their dressed-up Pokémon and PC Boxes, and share Battle Videos taken with the Vs. Recorder.

Azalea's charcoal maker hasn't seen his apprentice since he went into the forest.  You'll find him not far from the entrance, but the two Farfetch'd that help cut down the trees for charcoal have run off.  They get spooked easily, so you'll have to sneak up on them both from behind to catch them.
* The first Farfetch'd is pretty simple to catch.  Located just east of the apprentice, you must step on the pile of twigs south of the bird to get its attention.  Avoid the other pile of twigs, and loop around the grove of trees to grab it from behind.
* The second duck is a little trickier to catch.  You'll approach it from the south, but you need to chase it to the northeast corner, surrounded by three trees.  Step on the twigs to the east, avoid the pile to the north, and approach it from the west.
After both Farfetch'd have been rounded up, the Charcoal Maker walks up, and gives you 01 as thanks for saving his business.  If you return to the Charcoal Kiln in Azalea, the apprentice will give you a free Type-enhancing item as a reward.  Since you already have the Hive Badge, you are free to explore the rest of the forest.

Pass by the Ilex Shrine, and continue to the northeast.  Pick up the X Attack and the Antidote near the pond, and walk to the east.  Circle around to the south to reach another move tutor.
Goldenrod Gym
The Headbutt Guy
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity
DPcity

The Goldenrod Gym specializes in Normal Pokémon. Only Fighting moves have an advantage here, so the 06 from 36 or the 52 from the Department Store can make things much easier. The Gym is designed like a Clefairy, and challengers must navigate around the raised platform to reach the Gym Leader.

In the center of the forest, east of the small pond, is a guy that will offer to teach your Pokémon a useful move. Like in Gold and Silver, headbutting a tree may knock a Pokémon out of it.  The difference is, unlike Gold and Silver where you could only headbutt small pine trees, this time you can headbutt any tree.  This is the only way to find Pokémon like Pineco, Heracross, and Aipom, so put it to good use!
Whitney's Clefairy does not post much of a challenge, except for Metronome, which can churn out very powerful attacks, to the detriment of the target, but her Miltank is a troublemaker. Ghost Pokémon are typically unaffected by Normal moves, but Miltank's Scrappy ability nullifies this immunity. Its Attract causes Status ailment, which restricts opposite-gender foes to attacking only 50% of the time, and Milk Drink allows it to restore its HP. Stomp is a good STAB move, but which can flinch, and Rollout's low base power may not seem like much, but it gets stronger every turn, so end the match quickly before it starts doing serious damage to your team.

North of the move tutor is the second of the Kimono Girls, who seems to be lost.  Agree to help her, and your partner Pokémon will show her the way.  Don't forget to grab the Ether nearby.

Route 34 is a fairly short route that connects Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City, but one of the most important areas in the game is located here.  The Pokémon Daycare, like its counterpart on Kanto's Route 5, allows Trainers to leave their Pokémon to be raised by an elderly couple. As you approach, Lyra/Ethan shows up to visit the couple, who is revealed to be her/his grandparents. Your neighbor gives you her/his phone number before leaving, and the Daycare Man stops you on your way out to give you both his and his wife's numbers.  This way, you can call to check on your Pokémon anytime.  Any Pokémon left here will gain 1 EXP for every step you take.  However, the Johto Daycare accepts up to two Pokémon to raise at once.  If both a male and female are left together, you may return to find that the old couple has found an egg.  Keep the egg in your party like you did with Mr. Pokémon's Togepi, and it will hatch a few hours later.  This is the only way to get more members of a certain species (like Eevee) and baby Pokémon (like Pichu)!  If you don't have a compatible male-female pair, not to worry - track down a Ditto; that shapeshifting blob can mate with almost anything.
Whitney sobs uncontrollably when she loses, ignoring you altogether. Unable to receive the badge, you turn to leave when Lass Carrie suggests trying again. Whitney finally gives up the Plain, which enables the use of Strength in the field. She also hands over 45 as a prize. In addition, she mentions that something called the Pokéathlon Dome is now open next to the National Park, north of the city.

Make sure to trade phone numbers with Picnicker Gina near the fence - after beating her in a rematch, she'll give you a Leaf Stone.
Goldenrod Flower Shop
Before leaving for 35, stop by the flower shop just east of the Gym. The woman inside talks about an Sudowoodo on 36 that actually squirms around to avoid contact with water. Seeing your new Plain Badge, she hands over the SquirtBottle to help provoke it, hoping to discover the truth behind it. There are two ways to reach Route 36: backtracking to Violet City or battling several trainers on 35.

After obtaining the Berry Pots on Route 36, this same woman will be offering Mulch for sale.

Route 35
35 is a small path leading north from Goldenrod. The north gate has two exits: the newly-opened Pokéathlon Dome to the west, and the National Park to the north. To the east is a narrow, grassy trail that bypasses the park and connects directly to 36.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #soulsilver color light; -moz-border-radius: 1em; border: 5px solid #heartgold color light;"
A Favor
The guard in the southern gate, Webster, gives you his Spearow, nicknamed Kenya, holding a piece of Grass Mail. He asks you to deliver the mail to the man by the pond on 31. Talk to the person on Route 31 and show him any Pokémon holding Webster's mail. He will reward you with the 44. Return here to receive an HP Up from Webster as thanks.

If you want to keep Webster's Spearow, use a PC to transfer his Grass Mail to another Pokemon. Kenya levels up quickly and is close to evolution, which can make it a useful party member.

Revision as of 21:01, 27 January 2024

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Goldenrod City

Goldenrod City

Basement

While there are no shops in the basement, you can take the elevator downstairs to take some items for free.

2F

The Trainer's Market sells basic equipment and items that Trainers may find useful in their travels.

3F

The Battle Connection sells temporary stat-enhancing items.

4F

A pharmacy known as the Medicine Box sells permanent stat-enhancing items.

5F

The TM Corner offers a handful of different TMs for sale. Some of these attacks are very powerful at this part of the game, so consider buying whichever TMs your Pokémon can learn. On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper who gives out TM27 (Return) if your lead Pokémon is happy, and TM21 (Frustration) if it is unhappy.

Also on 5F, there is a man who is hoping to trade his Machop for a Drowzee. Drowzee are common on Routes 34 and 35, and the Machop received in return will have an advantage at the Goldenrod Gym, and holds a Macho Brace which doubles effort value growth.

6F

The Rooftop Atrium has vending machines that dispense tasty, cheap, health-restoring drinks. In addition, there is a raffle known as the Daily Drawing Corner that may be entered for $300. First and second prizes change with the day, but third prize is always a random Berry chosen from a group of seven. You can enter as many times as you want each day.

Day First prize Second Prize Third Prize
Sunday TM Dragon TM02 (Dragon Claw) Luxury Ball Luxury Ball Cheri Berry Cheri Berry
Chesto Berry Chesto Berry
Pecha Berry Pecha Berry
Rawst Berry Rawst Berry
Aspear Berry Aspear Berry
Oran Berry Oran Berry
Persim Berry Persim Berry
Monday TM Ghost TM65 (Shadow Claw) Nest Ball Nest Ball
Tuesday TM Steel TM91 (Flash Cannon) Repeat Ball Repeat Ball
Wednesday TM Electric TM57 (Charge Beam) Net Ball Net Ball
Thursday TM Fighting TM60 (Drain Punch) Quick Ball Quick Ball
Friday TM Normal TM42 (Facade) Dusk Ball Dusk Ball
Saturday TM Bug TM62 (Silver Wind) Timer Ball Timer Ball

Held items

Bill's House

Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the waterfront with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but since you are using his storage system, his sister gives out his phone number. Calling Bill is a useful way of checking the number of Pokémon stored in the current Box.

After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a gift from him.

Goldenrod Tunnel

The Goldenrod Tunnel runs north-south under the west side of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. The underground hallway houses three shops and a photo booth.

Bargain Shop

The northern shop is only open on Monday mornings, from 4:00am to 9:59am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Each of these items may only be purchased once per week.

Pokémon Salon

The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers. Their services will raise a Pokémon's friendship, though at different rates. The younger brotherSuWeFr charges $300, while the older brotherTuThSa charges $500. Their shop is closed on Mondays.

Herb Shop

The Herb Shop, the southernmost shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are less expensive than their traditional counterparts. The downside is that Pokémon do not enjoy their bitter taste, so their friendship rating will decrease slightly as a result. This shop is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Name Rater

The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, he evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows the Trainer to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester

The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of your lead Pokémon. There are certain Pokémon, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when happy with their Trainer. There are many things that can be done to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like grooming it, feeding it vitamins, or simply walking with it.

Answer all five questions correctly to win a Radio Card for the Pokégear. Once installed, you can tune into the following programs.

Program Host(s) Station Description
Pokémon Music Ben 1 (top-left) Broadcasts different music depending on the day of the week.
The Pokémon MarchSuMoWeFr increases the wild encounter rate, while the Pokémon LullabyTuThSa decreases it.

Variety Channel Silver Drama 4 (bottom-right) Broadcasts "Pokémon Search Party", "Serial Radio Drama", and "Buena's Password". These three programs rotate every hour.
Buena's Password Buena 4 (bottom-right) Broadcasts one password every few hours. Trainers tune in at 2am, 5am, 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, or 11pm then visit Buena to recite the password to earn points redeemable for prizes.

After completing the quiz, the local Gym Leader will compliment you before returning to the Gym.

Visit Buena in her second-floor studio to receive the Blue Card, which stores points earned from her password show. By amassing enough points, you can earn valuable prizes.

Goldenrod Gym

Goldenrod Gym

Goldenrod City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Whitney

The Incredibly Pretty Girl!

The Goldenrod Gym specializes in Normal-type Pokémon. Only Fighting-type moves have an advantage here, so the HM06 (Rock Smash) from Route 36 or the TM52 (Focus Blast) from the Department Store can make things much easier. The Gym is designed like a Clefairy, and challengers must navigate around the raised platform to reach the Gym Leader.

Whitney's Clefairy does not post much of a challenge, except for Metronome, which can churn out very powerful attacks, to the detriment of the target, but her Miltank is a troublemaker. Ghost-type Pokémon are typically unaffected by Normal moves, but Miltank's Scrappy ability nullifies this immunity. Its Attract causes infatuation, which restricts opposite-gender foes to attacking only 50% of the time, and Milk Drink allows it to restore its HP. Stomp is a good STAB move, but which can flinch, and Rollout's low base power may not seem like much, but it gets stronger every turn, so end the match quickly before it starts doing serious damage to your team.

Goldenrod Gym
The Plain Badge

Whitney sobs uncontrollably when she loses, ignoring you altogether. Unable to receive the badge, you turn to leave when Lass Carrie suggests trying again. Whitney finally gives up the Plain Badge, which enables the use of Strength in the field. She also hands over TM45 (Attract) as a prize. In addition, she mentions that something called the Pokéathlon Dome is now open next to the National Park, north of the city.

Goldenrod Flower Shop

Before leaving for Route 35, stop by the flower shop just east of the Gym. The woman inside talks about an odd tree on Route 36 that actually squirms around to avoid contact with water. Seeing your new Plain Badge, she hands over the SquirtBottle to help provoke it, hoping to discover the truth behind it. There are two ways to reach Route 36: backtracking to Violet City or battling several trainers on Route 35.

After obtaining the Berry Pots on Route 36, this same woman will be offering Mulch for sale.

Route 35

Route 35

Route 35 is a small path leading north from Goldenrod. The north gate has two exits: the newly-opened Pokéathlon Dome to the west, and the National Park to the north. To the east is a narrow, grassy trail that bypasses the park and connects directly to Route 36.

A Favor

The guard in the southern gate, Webster, gives you his Spearow, nicknamed Kenya, holding a piece of Grass Mail. He asks you to deliver the mail to the man by the pond on Route 31. Talk to the person on Route 31 and show him any Pokémon holding Webster's mail. He will reward you with the TM44 (Rest). Return here to receive an HP Up from Webster as thanks.

If you want to keep Webster's Spearow, use a PC to transfer his Grass Mail to another Pokemon. Kenya levels up quickly and is close to evolution, which can make it a useful party member.
