F.E.A.R.

The name currently in use is a fan designator; see below for more information.

F.E.A.R. is a strategy usable in the mainline Pokémon games starting from Generation IV. Historically, it centers on the combination of Endeavor, a Focus Sash or Sturdy (as of Generation V), and a damaging move with increased priority, though the term has since been applied to any strategy involving a lower-levelled Pokémon and Endeavor.

Etymology and origin

F.E.A.R. is a backronym that generally stands for:

  • Focus Sash (As of Generation V, the ability Sturdy is also usable in place of a held Focus Sash.)
  • Endeavor
  • (Quick) Attack (Most damaging moves with increased priority will work for the strategy.)
  • Rattata (Rattata are not the only Pokémon that can use F.E.A.R; multiple Pokémon can fit this role.)

The original term used for the strategy was "F***ing Evil Annihilating Rodent". This term, as well as the original strategy, was originally conceived on GameFAQs' Pokémon Diamond Message Board in a thread created by GameFAQs user reaverz some time in early 2007.[1] The strategy became infamous when it was featured in a recorded online battle between players "Untouchable" and "Marriland", the admin of the popular fan website of the same name.[2] The term has since been applied to any Pokémon capable of using Endeavor with a Focus Sash or Sturdy at a low level, such as an infamous moveset for Aron that uses Sturdy and Endeavor, along with a Shell Bell.

Strategy

Once a Pokémon capable of using F.E.A.R. is sent out, it will attempt to use Endeavor during its first turn, and an unaware opponent will most likely use an offensive attack to try to defeat the F.E.A.R. Pokémon, activating its held Focus Sash which will allow the F.E.A.R. Pokémon to survive the hit regardless of its level or defensive stats. Then, when the Pokémon uses Endeavor, the HP of the opponent's Pokémon will equal the HP of its own (which is now, assuming Focus Sash triggered, equal to 1). During the following turn, the F.E.A.R. Pokémon can use a priority move to wipe out the remaining 1 HP of the opponent's Pokémon. Focus Sash will not work twice, so a Pokémon can only use this strategy once. This strategy also only works if the F.E.A.R. Pokémon is slower, hence why the strategy historically recommends a level 1 Pokémon as this Pokémon will be frail enough for nearly any attack to trigger its Focus Sash while also being outsped by all level 100 Pokémon.

From Generation V onward, the Ability Sturdy was altered to function like a Focus Sash, but can activate multiple times provided the Pokémon regains all of its HP at the end of the turn. With this change came new users of F.E.A.R.; most notably, Aron became capable of using a combination of Endeavor and a held Shell Bell for multiple uses of Endeavor, and could knock out opponents on the same turn it uses Endeavor with an ally's Sand Stream or Toxic Spikes. As of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, an Endeavor-tutored Togedemaru with Sturdy and a Shell Bell can perform F.E.A.R. in the same way as Aron before it, and can additionally learn Spiky Shield, allowing it to finish off weakened opponents that make contact.

F.E.A.R. is also useful for capturing wild Pokémon. A F.E.A.R. Pokémon or a faster Pokémon with Endeavor whose HP has been set to 1 before the battle can lower a target Pokémon's HP to 1, similar to using False Swipe, and more easily catch it than by battling it normally. A F.E.A.R. Cottonee can also inflict a priority paralysis (with Prankster) to further increase the catch rate.

Counterplay

F.E.A.R. is easily countered by players familiar with the strategy, though specific counterplay differs depending on the Pokémon employing the strategy. A clear sign the opponent is using F.E.A.R. is the level of the opposing Pokémon, as level 1 Pokémon are unviable in most competitive rulesets, and the presence of one implies the use of the strategy. If the opponent is familiar with the F.E.A.R. strategy, they may not use a damaging move, which is required for it to work; though the F.E.A.R. Pokémon can still do a sizable amount of damage with Endeavor at full HP, it will be unable to knock out the opposing Pokémon on the next turn with a priority move. They may also switch out into a Pokémon immune to Endeavor, or switch out after the opponent's F.E.A.R. uses Endeavor, preserving their Pokémon and leaving the F.E.A.R. Pokémon with 1 HP. However, if the F.E.A.R.-using player predicts correctly, this can be played around using Pursuit prior to Generation VIII. Ghost-type Pokémon are also immune to Normal-type attacks, Endeavor and Quick Attack are useless against them. It should be noted that a F.E.A.R. Kangaskhan or a Taillow from Generation V on with Scrappy will still be able to use Endeavor against a Ghost-type Pokémon.

The large difference in level will almost always result in the opponent's Pokémon outspeeding the F.E.A.R. Pokémon when using their own increased priority attacks (with the exception of Fake Out and First Impression), leaving the opponent with little HP, but leaving the F.E.A.R. player with one Pokémon down. However, from Generation V onward, Feint and Extreme Speed have +2 priority, and are not countered by +1 priority moves. If the foe acts last due to battling in Trick Room, the F.E.A.R. Pokémon will be faster, causing it to be unable to finish off the opposing Pokémon on the following turn as its Focus Sash will not activate until after Endeavor has been used.

Entry hazards such as Spikes or Stealth Rock will prevent the Focus Sash effect from triggering, thus causing the foe to be unable to withstand a one-hit KO. This only works if the F.E.A.R. Pokémon isn't sent out prior to the move being used. Additionally, only Stealth Rock will work if the F.E.A.R. Pokémon is immune to Spikes or Toxic Spikes, and starting in Generation VIII, a F.E.A.R. Pokémon with Sturdy has the option of holding Heavy-Duty Boots. Moves, status conditions, Abilities, and weather that deal damage every turn (like sandstorm, poison, or binding) can also cancel out Focus Sash's effect, which can be easily activated by abilities such as Sand Stream. Ground-, Rock- and Steel-type F.E.A.R. users are immune to sandstorm, with the latter also being immune to poison damage. Swinub and Wormadam (with the ability Overcoat) are also notable for being F.E.A.R. users that are immune to all types of weather. Embargo and Magic Room prevent the foe from using any item, in this case Focus Sash and Shell Bell, while Trick or Switcheroo can be used to remove the Focus Sash from the F.E.A.R. Pokémon. Held items that restore HP, such as Black Sludge (if the holder is Poison-type), Leftovers, being poisoned while having Poison Heal and an HP-restoring Berry return some HP to the user's Pokémon, which will be far more than the F.E.A.R. Pokémon can deal, rendering them safe from a KO on the next turn. Multistrike moves, such as Bullet Seed and Triple Kick, will continue hitting after the Focus Sash or Sturdy triggers, causing the strategy to fail.

Substitutes, either made with Substitute or Shed Tail or sent to an opponent's ally using Baton Pass, can protect opposing Pokémon from Endeavor. However, Seviper can have the ability Infiltrator, allowing them to hit Endeavor while ignoring the opposing Pokémon's Substitute. In Double and Triple Battles, double-targeting the F.E.A.R. Pokémon will cause it to faint, since the Focus Sash will only activate for the first attack. However, Follow Me, Rage Powder, and Greninja's Mat Block can protect the F.E.A.R. Pokémon from damage. Although Sturdy acts like a Focus Sash from Generation V onward, the Abilities Mold Breaker, Turboblaze, Teravolt and Neutralizing Gas, as well as moves like Sunsteel Strike, ignore this effect, countering any attempt to use F.E.A.R. with Sturdy. As Endeavor is a contact move, the F.E.A.R. Pokémon can be finished off if its opponent is carrying a Rocky Helmet or has the Ability Rough Skin or Iron Barbs. Finally, Pokémon with the Ability Queenly Majesty or Dazzling, as well as Pokémon that are on the ground when Psychic Terrain is in effect, are unaffected by opposing F.E.A.R. Pokémon's priority moves.

Due to this aforementioned counterplay for F.E.A.R., the strategy is seen as largely unviable in competitive play and has not achieved widespread competitive success, and as of Generation VIII, all Pokémon below level 50 will now be set to that level, preventing lower-levelled Pokémon from being used for the strategy, further hindering its reliability. The strategy has seen occasional use over the years; most notably, Jack Kurniawan reached top 4 in the 2016 Taiwan Nationals with a team that used a level 27 Pikachu with Endeavor and Feint. This specific level may have been chosen as, with the given EV spread, the Pikachu was slower than minimum speed Groudon and Kyogre, ensuring it would be hit first outside of Trick Room while also outspeeding them under Trick Room.[3]

List of Pokémon that can learn Endeavor and a priority move

Unless another method is specified, from Generation VIII onwards, most evolved Pokémon can now be obtained at level 1 through transfer from Pokémon GO, allowing the Evolutions of Pokémon listed here to serve as viable F.E.A.R. users as well.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Black Belt Brian in Hammerlocke has a level 2 Cottonee that uses a F.E.A.R. moveset and holds a Focus Sash. Defeating Brian gives the player a Focus Sash as a reward.
  • While Golisopod is able to learn both Endeavor and Sucker Punch, it is incapable of using F.E.A.R. due to its Ability, Emergency Exit.
    • Similarly, in Generation IX, while Slaking is able to learn Endeavor and Sucker Punch, it is incapable of using F.E.A.R. due to its Ability, Truant.
