Monferno (Japanese: モウカザル Moukazaru) is a dual-type Fire/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves from Chimchar starting at level 14 and evolves into Infernape starting at level 36.

Contents

Biology

Physiology

Monferno is a chimpanzee-like Pokémon with baboon-like features. Much of Monferno's hair is a bright orange color, appearing shaggier on the top of Monferno's feet. Monferno now has an evident tail, unlike its previous form. Its tail is similar to those of Charmander, Charmeleon, and Charizard, all of whom have flames at the tips, although the flame on Monferno’s tail is much more spindly, and the base of the tail has a patch of red coloration. Monferno’s snout, ears, belly, three-toed feet, five fingers and the circular marking on its palms are all a shade of beige. It has a spiky ruff of white hair around its neck and gold arm bands. Monferno has blue markings above its eyes and red markings between them on its face. Monferno has small fangs, orange eyelids and a small crest of orange hair.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Monferno's abilities are similar to Chimchar's, only stronger. Monferno is capable of a few Fighting-type moves; such as Close Combat and Focus Blast, as well as Flare Blitz.

Behavior

As the playful Pokémon, Monferno are naturally playful. However, they use fierce martial arts techniques. Monferno often uses its tail flame as a weapon. When threatened, it increases the size of its flame in order to appear larger than it really is, which is useful in scaring off attacking foes. A bigger fire on its tail and a brighter blue pattern on its face means its rank in its pack is higher.

Trivia

  • Much like the Charmander family, the flame on Monferno's tail will become smaller when it's not feeling well.
  • Monferno remains in this stage of evolution for 22 levels, this is tied with Quilava for the longest that the first evolution of a starter Pokémon takes to reach its final form. Coincidentally both are of the Fire-type.

Origin

Monferno may be based on a mandrill, a creature similar to a baboon. It also appears to be a direct impression of the Monkey Kung Fu, a type of martial arts, which could explain its Fighting-type half.

Name origin

Monferno is a combination of monkey and inferno. Moukazaru is a combination of the words 猛火 mōka, roaring flames, and 猿 saru, ape.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Panpyro From Schimpanse and pyro.
French Chimpenfeu From chimpanzé and en feu.
Korean 파이숭이 Faisung'i
Chinese (Mandarin) 猛火猴 Měnghuǒhóu Literally "Fierce fire monkey".
Chinese (Cantonese) 猛火猴 Máahngfóhàuh Same as Mandarin name.
