Dratini first appeared in The Legend of Dratini. The Warden of the Safari Zone was protecting the Tiny Dragon Pokémon. The episode was banned from English-audience due to excessive use of a firearm.

Dratini was also in Beauty is Skin Deep. This Dratini belonged to Clair and Team Rocket wanted to steal it from her. Clair's Dratini evolved into a Dragonair at the end of the episode.

Trivia

  • Dratini's prototype name was "Dragoon," meaning a European military unit, but was probably used as a play on the word "dragon," or as a combination of "dragon" and "lagoon." Coincidently, Dragoon is the name of a craft used on Kirby Air Ride
  • Controversy in the episode where Dratini is introduced was banned from American audiences due to a character placing a gun in Ash's face (among a few others). Dratini and Dragonair have made appearances since, unlike others
  • Dratini's Red, Blue, and Green sprites looked more like snakes or worms than dragons because of the stripes on its underbelly (which were removed in Yellow).
  • Dratini is the first Dragon Pokémon in National Dex order.
  • Dratini and its evolutions share the same species name with Horsea and its evolutions and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.

Origin

It appears to be based upon sea serpents or lóng, traditional Chinese dragons who bring good luck.

Name origin

Dratini's name appears to be a combination of dragon and teeny, meaning small. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length. Its Japanese name, a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū, dragon, has a similar meaning.

In other languages

  • German: Dratini
  • French: Minidraco - Comes from miniature and draco, which is Latin for "dragon".
  • Korean: 미뇽 Minyong
