He replaced [[Wallace]], his former student, who in Emerald was moved up to the position of [[Pokémon Champion|Pokémon League Champion]], replacing {{Steven}}. Juan is quite the celebrity type in {{ci|Sootopolis}}, putting on shows with his Pokémon. He has many female fans, and is considered very dashing. In addition to being a Gym Leader, he is a former winner of the [[Grand Festival]]. He appeared in ''[[AG110|The Great Eight Fate]]'' and ''[[AG111|Eight Ain't Enough]]'' when he battled {{Ash}}, who won the Rain Badge after a tough battle.

He has a butler, {{ho|Sebastian}}, who also serves as the [[Sootopolis Gym]] assistant. Juan uses unique rules in his Gym matches: the first round is a [[Double Battle]] held in a large swimming pool, while the other rounds are held in a battlefield that resembles a lake surrounded by land.

Juan also makes a cameo appearance in a flashback in ''[[DP093|Playing The Leveling Field!]]''.

Sealeo was one of the two Pokémon Juan used in the first round of his battle with Ash. Sealeo used {{m|Blizzard}} on {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{AP|Snorunt|Glalie}}, but Snorunt countered it with {{m|Icy Wind}}. It then tried to hit Pikachu with {{m|Aurora Beam}}, but Pikachu dodged. When Ash switched Snorunt for {{AP|Corphish}} and attacked with {{m|BubbleBeam}}, Sealeo dived into the water and tried hitting Pikachu again, but once again Pikachu dodged. After Sealeo was left alone against both of Ash's Pokémon it used {{m|Ice Ball}} repeatedly and almost won the battle, but was eventually taken down by Corphish's {{m|Crabhammer}}.

When Ash's Pokémon were attempting to attack from up close, Seaking hit Snorunt with {{m|Hyper Beam}}, forcing Ash to switch Snorunt for {{AP|Corphish}}. Seaking then dived and used {{m|Horn Attack}}, but Corphish caught it by the horn. Seaking followed up with Horn Drill, damaging Corphish, but was then hit by Pikachu's {{m|Iron Tail}} and fainted.

Juan thought he won the round, but Swellow recovered and used {{m|Aerial Ace}}, even after Whiscash dived underwater. Juan was once [[Wallace]]'s mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Later, Wallace succeeded him as the Gym Leader after winning the Hoenn Pokémon League. When Hoenn got into the crisis because of the fight between {{p|Groudon}} and {{p|Kyogre}}, Wallace had to take up the place as the Champion and asked Juan to take over as the Gym Leader again.

He was the one who rescued [[Tate and Liza]] when they were trapped in [[Mack]]'s fire illusion in Mt. Pyre, as well as {{adv|Ruby}} and {{adv|Sapphire}} when they were being blown away by the Groudon's and Kyogre's energy in Sootopolis. He brought all of them to the Mirage Island and requested Liza & Tate to train Ruby and Sapphire about Double Battle, in order to prepare the two Trainers for the final showdown against Groudon and Kyogre. Juan himself also trained Ruby and Sapphire to increase their mental strength, so that they would not be controlled by the two Orbs, as [[Maxie]] and [[Archie]] had been.

As he had been Wallace's mentor, Ruby respected him right from the beginning and calls him "Great Master" (大師匠, ''dai shishou'').

Juan would sometimes use French phrases like {{tt|''"Bonjour"''|Good day}} and {{tt|''"très bien"''|Very well}}.
