A Hiker (Japanese: やまおとこ Alpinist) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that first debuted in the Generation I games. They appear as large men who (except in Generation III), have beards with a walking stick and hiking gear. In the first two generations, they appear to be wearing a hard hat for protection. On the following generations, they wear a hat more associated with alpinists instead, and also carry a large backpack. They specialize in a combination of Fighting-, Ground-, and Template:Type2 Pokémon that are common in mountains and caves, such as Onix, Machop, and Geodude, although not all of them exclusively train those types.

As the name would imply, Hikers are usually found in caves or mountainous areas, places where hiking is common. In Kanto, they can be found in Mt. Moon, the Rock Tunnel and the contiguous Routes 9 and 10, and, somewhat uncharacteristically, Routes 13 and 25 (as these routes are not mountainous; on the contrary, they are both located by the sea). In Johto, Hikers are located in Union Cave and the contiguous Route 33, Route 42 (near the entrance to Mt. Mortar), and Routes 45 and 46 (near the entrances to the Dark Cave). In Hoenn, they can be found in Route 112 (near the entrances to the Fiery Path), the Rusturf Tunnel and the nearby Route 116, Route 114 (to the north of Meteor Falls), and in the Jagged Pass, as well as, exclusively in Pokémon Emerald, in the Rustboro and Lavaridge Gyms. In the Sevii Islands, Hikers appear in the Ruin Valley and Water Path. They appear in Sinnoh in the Routes directly east and west of Mt. Coronet (Routes Route 207, Route 208 and Route 211), as well as in Wayward Cave and the nearby Route 206. In Unova, Hikers appear in Mistralton Cave, Chargestone Cave, and Twist Mountain. Atypically, they also appear in Routes 10, 14, 15, and 18. None of these Routes are close to a cave or mountain, though they all have large cliffs and high ledges.

In the anime

Ash battled a Hiker in the episode Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden. Bulbasaur defeated the Hiker's Rhyhorn but needed to be rushed to the Pokémon Center right after.

He later made cameos in The Rivals and You're a Star, Larvitar!.

A Hiker's Rhyhorn made a brief appearance in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden where it battled Ash and his Bulbasaur. Rhyhorn goes for a Take Down hurting it badly and creating a lump on Bulbasaur's head. Bulbasaur nearly faints and Ash tries to recall it but Bulbasaur does not want to. It uses Razor Leaf and then a Vine Whip fainting Rhyhorn in the end.

Rhyhorn made a cameo in The Rivals.

Rhyhorn's only known move is Take Down.
