Rapidash (Japanese: ギャロップ Gallop) is a Fire-type Pokémon.
It evolves from Ponyta starting at level 40.
Biology
Physiology
Rapidash is a horse-like, quadruped Pokémon. It has a horn, reminiscent of a unicorn. Rapidash has eyes with red irises that are proportionally smaller and different in design to its pre-evolution, Ponyta. Like its pre-evolution, Rapidash has various flames streaming from certain spots on its body. However, Rapidash’s flames are different in shape and location on the body to Ponyta’s, for the flames at the tops of the legs have vanished and there are now flames on the ankles. Rapidash’s 'tail'-flame now streams from its back, and Rapidash’s head flame is much longer.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
They run at about 150mph, chasing everything that moves in hopes of racing it. With incredible acceleration, they reach their top speed in only ten steps. At full gallop, their four hooves barely touch the ground.
Behavior
Rapidash are very agile Pokémon. They can live on mountains along with Rock and other Fire Pokémon. It is possible that they live alone, rather than in groups of fellow Rapidash. They are the highest evolved form of Ponyta and are highly capable in battle. Although Rapidash only casually canter, they are very competitive Pokémon. They will chase anything that moves in hopes of racing it. The faster Rapidash go, the longer the swaying flames of their mane will become. At an all-out gallop, their blazing mane sparkles, a feature which is said to enhance their beautiful appearance.
Habitat
Most Rapidash live on grassland such as fields and plains, but they can also be seen on mountains. The best place to find wild ones would be in Kanto, though some can be found in Johto and Unova as well.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
They can sometimes be found with the Shuca Berry. This suggests that it is part of a Rapidash's diet.

Trivia
- In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Rapidash was originally known as "Gallop". This is, of course, its romanized Japanese name.
- Rapidash is the favorite Pokémon of the Kanto Pokémon Fan Club President. When the player first speaks to him, he goes on about why Rapidash is his favorite Pokémon at length.
- In the first movie, there is a split second where Rapidash has no flames.
- It is one of the few Pokémon in Pokémon Ranger and Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia to have the same field move in both games.
Origin
Rapidash's horn shows it may have been inspired by unicorns, but it doesn't seem to have anything else in common with unicorns, being more like a regular horse. It would also seem that Rapidash, along with its pre-evolution, are based on the Greek god Helios's fiery steeds.
Name origin
Rapidash may be a combination of rapid and dash, referring to the high speed at which it runs. It could also be a combination of rapid and ash (referencing its Fire-typing).
Gallop is literally gallop, a form of running for hoofed animals.
