Brendan awarding Torchic an Effort Ribbon

A Ribbon is a special item which can be awarded to a Pokémon for a variety of reasons. Ribbons stay on a Pokémon permanently and can be checked in different ways depending on the game version.

In the games

Ribbons were introduced in Generation III, where they primarily serve as rewards for competing in Pokémon Contests, though certain ribbons are obtainable by defeating the Elite Four or from special events, among others. They are viewable from the PokéNav in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. While in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen they aren't visible, their data is still kept, and the correct ribbons appear on a Pokémon if transfered to the Hoenn games or those from the following generation. In Generation IV, more ribbons were introduced, where they are viewable in the Pokémon's summary screen.

In Generation V, ribbons are kept, and though they aren't obtainable anywhere in-game, they can still be seen in the summary screen if obtained in Generation IV or from an event. Pokémon Black and White introduced a new categorization scheme, separating them as League, Contest, Tower, Memorial, and Gift Ribbons.

League Ribbons

League Ribbons are awarded to every Pokémon in the player's current party when he or she defeats the Elite Four in Generation III or in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. There are two distinct League Ribbons.

Contest Ribbons

Contest Ribbons are awarded to the winning Pokémon in any of Hoenn's Contests and Sinnoh's Super Contests. A different ribbon is awarded for winning in each of the four ranks of the five different categories (Cool, Beauty, Cute, Smart, and Tough), making a total of 20 ribbons. As those awarded in Contests and Super Contests are considered separate, there are a total of 40 contest-related ribbons obtainable in the games.

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the Normal Rank ribbons for all five Hoenn Contests can be obtained at the Verdanturf Town Contest Hall; the Super Rank ribbons, at Fallarbor Town; the Hyper Rank ribbons, at Slateport City; and the Master Rank ribbons at Lilycove City. In Emerald, all are obtained at Lilycove City.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, all 20 ribbons for the four ranks of Super Contest (Normal, Great, Ultra, and Master) are obtained at the Hearthome City Contest Hall.

Tower Ribbons

Tower Ribbons are awarded to Pokémon used to complete certain challenges in any of Hoenn's, Sinnoh's, or Johto's Battle Towers.

There are two Ribbons from the Battle Tower found in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. The first (Winning Ribbon) is awarded for clearing the Lv50 Battle Tower, the second (Victory Ribbon) for the Lv100 Battle Tower in Ruby and Sapphire, or Open Level Battle Tower in Emerald. Ribbons are awarded to party Pokémon upon completion of the 8th consecutive Battle Tower challenge (defeat 56 trainers in a row) and each challenge thereafter if a Pokémon does not already have a ribbon. Defeating 50 trainers in a row but losing before 56 does not award any ribbons.

RibbonsTowerSinnoh.png

In Generation IV, the Ability Ribbon and Great Ability Ribbon are awarded to Pokémon that have managed to defeat Palmer in the Battle Tower. The Double Ability Ribbon is from winning 50 times in the Double Battles while the Multi Ability Ribbon is gained after winning 50 battles against the CPU in Multi Battles. The Pair Ability Ribbon is from winning 50 battles in Multi Battles with someone. The World Ability Ribbon is gained by reaching Rank 5 in the Wifi mode.

Memory Ribbons

Effort Ribbon

The Effort Ribbon is awarded to a Pokémon who has 510 effort values. The Effort Ribbon is given by a woman at the Slateport City marketplace in Generation III, at Sunyshore Market in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, and in Blackthorn City in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. A level 100 Pokémon that is denied an Effort Ribbon cannot earn any more effort values in Generation III or IV, the only generations this ribbon is obtainable in, and thus it will never be eligible for such a distinction.

Portrait Ribbon

File:RibbonPortrait.png This Ribbon is given to a Pokémon that has its portrait put in Lilycove's museum. This is achieved by winning the Master Rank Contest by a huge amount of points.

Weekday Ribbons

Each day of the week, the woman in the top-right house in Sunyshore, Julia, will give players a Ribbon when she is told a story. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, they are given out by the Week Siblings instead, after the player has obtained all of their items.

  • Monday - Alert Ribbon
  • Tuesday - Shock Ribbon
  • Wednesday - Downcast Ribbon
  • Thursday - Careless Ribbon
  • Friday - Relax Ribbon
  • Saturday - Snooze Ribbon
  • Sunday - Smile Ribbon

Footprint Ribbon

File:RibbonFootprint.png If a Pokémon is happy with its trainer, the footprint inspector on Route 213, Dr. Footstep, will give it a Footprint Ribbon.

Resort Area Ribbons

If a Pokémon in a player's party has a combined total of 10 or more unique Ribbons, their trainer can get into the Ribbon Syndicate. Here, more Ribbons can be purchased for the Pokémon:

  • Gorgeous Ribbon - $10000
  • Royal Ribbon - $100000
  • Gorgeous Royal Ribbon - $999999

Legend Ribbon

The Legend Ribbon is awarded to every Pokémon in the player's team after defeating Red in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Other Gift Ribbons

There are "Pokémon Event" and "Pokémon Festival" Ribbons which may have been distributed at Pokémon events and festivals in Japan. They are: Red Ribbon, Green Ribbon, Blue Ribbon, Festival Ribbon, Carnival Ribbon, and Premier Ribbon. The description of these Ribbons is "A commemorative Ribbon obtained at a mystery location." if the player has yet to obtain a Pokémon with one of these ribbons themselves from an event - only obtaining a Pokémon with one from a trade.

The description is "Special Holiday Ribbon."

In the anime

File:Lila ribbon.png
Ribbons in the anime

Unlike the games, ribbons are not attached to individual Pokémon. Instead, they are more akin to badges earned at gyms. They are considered proof that a Coordinator has won a particular Contest. Unlike badges, Coordinators only get a single chance of earning a particular ribbon in a certain Contest. They also must compete with other Coordinators to earn it.

Once a Coordinator earns five ribbons, they are able to enter and compete in the Grand Festival, the Contest equivalent of the Pokémon League. Ribbons also do not expire, and multiple years can be used to collect the five needed ribbons for the Grand Festival. However, after competing in the Festival, the five cannot be used in another competition.
