This page details the Pokémon that are first available or choosable by the player in various games in the franchise.
- For a list of the first Pokémon obtained by various characters in different ascepcts of the franchise, see List of characters' first Pokémon.
- For a list of characters who own first partner Pokémon, see List of characters with first partner Pokémon.
In the core series games
Player's first Pokémon
- Main article: First partner Pokémon
At the start of most core series Pokémon games, the player can choose from one of three Pokémon: a Grass-type Pokémon, a Fire-type Pokémon, and a Water-type Pokémon. These Pokémon are generally rare in other games. The table below shows the Pokémon that are selectable at the start of each core series game, and which other games they can also be obtained in. A G, F or W above the game's title indicates that only the first partner Pokémon in the trio that corresponds to that type is obtainable in that game. For availability in games outside of the core series, refer to the "Game locations" heading of the Pokémon's respective species page.

In Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, the player's first Pokémon are Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. The three Pokémon are available from the start, as seen in the Challenge mode.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
- Main articles: Hero Pokémon and Partner Pokémon (Mystery Dungeon)
In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, the player character is a Pokémon. Classically, the player chooses their character by a quiz, but in the Adventure Squad games and Gates to Infinity, the character can be chosen manually; in later games, it can be chosen by either method. After choosing their character, the player also chooses a partner from the remaining Pokémon, so long as it is not the same type as the player. Up until Explorers of Sky, the partner can only be selected from first partner Pokémon or Pikachu.
In Red and Blue Rescue Team, Meowth, Machop, and Cyndaquil are only available as male, while Eevee, Chikorita, and Skitty are only available as female.
In Explorers of Time and Darkness, all Pokémon are available as either gender.
In Explorers of Sky, Phanpy, Shinx, and Riolu are only available as male, while Vulpix, Eevee, and Skitty are only available as female.
In the Adventure Squad games, the available starting Pokémon differ depending on the game.
Blazing Adventure Squad:
Stormy Adventure Squad:
Light Adventure Squad:
In Gates to Infinity, there are no gender-based restrictions on selectable Pokémon. However, the hero can only be male in all versions. In the Japanese version, the partner's gender can be chosen, but all other languages only allow the partner to be male.
In Super Mystery Dungeon, there are no gender-based restrictions on selectable Pokémon. However, the hero can only be male in all versions. In European versions, the partner can only be female, while other versions allow either gender for the partner.
In Rescue Team DX, the list of choosable Pokémon is the same as that of Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, but without the options being restricted by gender.
Pokémon Ranger series
- Main article: Partner Pokémon (Ranger)
In Pokémon Ranger, the player's first Pokémon depends on their gender: female player characters get Plusle, while male player characters get Minun.
In Shadows of Almia, the player can choose one of the following Pokémon for their first partner.
In Guardian Signs, the player's first partner is a special Ukulele-playing Pichu.
Pokémate

In Pokémate, the player is given one random Pokémon when accessing the game for the first time.
Pokémon Rumble series

In the Pokémon Rumble games, the player controls Toy Pokémon.
In Pokémon Rumble, the player immediately starts in a Battle Royale controlling a Rattata.
In Pokémon Rumble Blast, the player starts in Beginner's Park with a Pikachu.
In Pokémon Rumble U, the player first enters Dream Gate and takes control of a Pikachu, with Tepig, Oshawott, and Snivy fighting alongside them.
In Pokémon Rumble World, the player starts with a Pikachu lent to them by the king to explore the King's Training Field.
In Pokémon Rumble Rush, the player is first given a Rattata to practice with in a tutorial area.
PokéPark series
In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, the player plays as a Pikachu for the whole game.
In PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, the player starts out as a Pikachu, but can later switch to Snivy, Tepig, or Oshawott.
Pokédex 3D
In Pokédex 3D, all players begin with the following Pokémon.
Pokémon Conquest
In Pokémon Conquest, the player starts off in Aurora as the newest Warlord, with their partner Eevee.
Pokémon Shuffle
In Pokémon Shuffle, 6 of the Pokémon in the first area, Puerto Blanco, are forced to be caught during Amelia's tutorial. These Pokémon are (in order): Espurr, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Eevee, and Audino.
Pokémon Picross
In Pokémon Picross, Professor Tetra gifts the player an Eevee and a Squirtle upon entering area 01.
Pokémon GO
In Pokémon GO, when the player first starts the game, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle will appear nearby and the player can battle and catch one of them. The player can walk away from them and they will reappear later. After walking away four times, Pikachu will also appear.
Pokémon Quest
In Pokémon Quest, the player follows MoBee's suggestion to befriend a Pokémon in order to help them navigate the unfamiliar island. They go to a clearing, where they find a Pikachu, Eevee, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and a Squirtle. Only one of them can be befriended.
Additionally, after the second expedition, the player goes through the cooking tutorial, which always results in them befriending a Rattata and Pidgey. [1]
Eevee × Tamagotchi
In Eevee × Tamagotchi, the only available Pokémon is the virtual pet Eevee.
Pokémon Masters EX
In Pokémon Masters EX, in the main story, Scottie/Bettie starts with a Pikachu.
Pokémon UNITE
In Pokémon UNITE, when first starting the game, originally all players were given the option between one of five Pokémon Unite Licenses to choose from, one for each role in the game:
However, since the version 1.12.1.2 update, this was changed so that instead, the player is always given Pikachu's Unite License directly after Tutorial (Basics 1).
After Tutorial (Basics 2) is competed, Erbie gives the player a present: the choice of one of three Pokémon Unite Licenses to take as well.
Trivia
- Since both first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum are always male, this had the outcome of preventing players from obtaining Eevee, Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon in Generation III (by trading with Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and breeding) until the release of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.
