Kotone (Japanese: コトネ Kotone) is a recurring character in the Pokémon anime who debuted in DP143.
Ash and friends first met Kotone when her Marill wandered off and they found it wedged in a wall. She introduced herself as a Trainer from Johto. She came to Sinnoh with her friend, Kazunari and his father in order to observe the Pokémon native to the region. Later she asks Dawn to participate in the Johto Festa. The two girls had a battle but Kotone lost and rewarded Dawn with an egg.
It is implied in DP144 that Kotone has an interest in Ash, though whether it's platonic or a tad romantic remains uncertain. She admires his bravery and wishes that Kazunari would act more like him. Kotone even asks Dawn if she and Ash are a couple though Dawn quickly denies it. In DP145, she attempted to pair Kazunari and Dawn together as a couple before eventually realizing she had feelings for the former.
In DP147, she and Kazunari had a tag battle against Ash and Dawn in the Lilypad Colosseum. Both Kotone and Kazunari eventually lost the battle.
Later they headed back to Johto with Kazunari's father. Kotone plans on challenging Whitney and Morty. Also, upon her request, Kazunari decided to become her traveling buddy. They promised Ash and Dawn that they would see them again.

Marill is one of Kotone's main Pokémon and appears to be very affectionate towards her. Marill first appeared in DP143 and it was because of Marill that Ash and his friends met Kotone, as they helped it when it was trapped between two buildings near where the Johto Festa was taking place. In DP144, Marill was responsible for the gang getting trapped in the Valley Windworks when it wandered off during a practice battle between Ash and Dawn. Marill also appeared in DP145 where its sensitive hearing helped the gang search for a Gible that was causing trouble near a Pokémon Center. Marill's only known attack is Water Gun. |

Chikorita is Kotone's starter Pokémon and was used by Kotone to battle Dawn's Piplup in DP143 as part of the Johto Festa. Despite the type-advantage, Chikorita was defeated by Piplup's Peck. Chikorita's next appearance was in DP147 where it was used in a tag battle alongside Kazunari's Totodile against Ash's Monferno and Dawn's Cyndaquil. Although Chikorita was weak against both Fire-types, it still put up a good fight but was defeated by Cyndaquil's Flame Wheel. Chikorita's known attacks are Tackle, Razor Leaf, Light Screen and SolarBeam. |
