Psyduck (Japanese: コダック Koduck) is a Water-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Psyduck are usually unable to think very clearly due to having a chronic headache.

Habitat

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

In the anime

Misty has a Psyduck that she accidentally caught in Kanto. It is a constant source of frustration for her.

In EP091, a girl named Marina owned a Psyduck that wasn't as dopey as the one Misty had.

In AG140, a Psyduck was owned by a rich girl named Emily. However, the Psyduck didn't like having a pampered life-style and kept running away.

Other appearances

Super Smash Brothers Melee

Psyduck is the third Pokéfloat to appear. Fighting occurs on its head and beak. It then floats up and off the top of the screen as the fighting moves onto Chikorita.

Pokédex entries

Game Pokédex
Pokémon Red and Blue While lulling its enemies with its vacant look, this wily Pokémon will use psychokinetic powers.
Pokémon LeafGreen
Pokémon Yellow Always tormented by headaches. It uses psychic powers, but it is not known if it intends to do so.
Pokémon FireRed It is constantly wracked by a headache. When the headache turns intense, it begins using mysterious powers.
Pokémon Gold It has mystical powers but doesn't recall that it has used them. That is why it always looks puzzled.
Pokémon Silver If its chronic headache peaks, it may exhibit odd powers. It seems unable to recall such an episode.
Pokémon Crystal The only time it can use its psychic power is when its sleeping brain cells happen to wake.
Pokémon Ruby Psyduck uses a mysterious power. When it does so, this Pokémon generates brain waves that are supposedly only seen in sleepers. This discovery spurred controversy among scholars.
Pokémon Sapphire If it uses its mysterious power, Psyduck can't remember having done so. It apparently can't form a memory of such an event because it goes into an altered state that is much like deep sleep.
Pokémon Emerald When its headache intensifies, it starts using strange powers. However, it has no recollection of its powers, so it always looks befuddled and bewildered.

Game locations

In side games

  • Pokémon Snap: One is first seen swimming around in circles, and hitting it with an item will cause it to sink. It will then start jumping out of the water where it was swimming and high into the air. Throwing items into the water may cause it to appear out of the water in other spots, sometimes jumping up very quickly with sparkles around it.

Trivia

One riddle posed in Brock's Trivia made a pun out of Psyduck's Japanese name with 子を抱っこ ko o dakko, hug a child.

Origin

Psyduck's apparent lack of feathers and ability to fly, along with its claws, suggest that its design draws inspiration from a duck as well as the duck-billed platypus.

Name origin

Psyduck's name is possibly a combination of psychic, referring to its mental powers, and duck. Its Japanese name can be taken to mean small duck.

In other languages

  • German: Enton
  • French: Psykokwak - A corrupted combination of Psycho and quack; the sound ducks make.
  • Korean: 고라파덕 Gorapadeok
