The third mission in the Crown Tundra centers around Legendary Clue 3, entitled ‘The Bird Pokémon of Legend’. The clue mentions a great tree, and if you ask Peony about the quest he suggests going to the massive red tree at the southern end of the tundra. On the Town Map, you’ll see the tree in question on Dyna Tree Hill, at the middle of Ballimere Lake. To get there you’ll need to head through the Giant's Bed (there’s a handy fly point in the southern area if you’ve been to the Rock Peak Ruins), and cross the river using your enhanced Rotom Bike.
Ballimere Lake
Ballimere Lake sits on the southern peninsula of the Crown Tundra, with the lake itself forming a moat around Dyna Tree Hill in the center. Lakeside Cave can be found in the northeast of the area, while the lake itself can be accessed from the north, or from the east, next to the slope up to Dyna Tree Hill. There is a small island in the lake, which becomes relevant in a different mission, and a small tombstone near the entrance to the Lakeside Cave where Spiritomb will spawn if certain conditions have been met. For now, explore the area as you see fit, before heading to Dyna Tree Hill in the heart of the peninsula.

These wanderers will respawn indefinitely until caught.
Spiritomb will appear if the player interacts with a tombstone to the northwest of the entrance to the Dyna Tree Hill, talks with 32 different players, interacts with the tombstone again, then re-enters the area.

Dyna Tree Hill
The first time you approach Dyna Tree Hill, a cinematic will play. If you were expecting the legendary birds described by Legendary Clue 3 to be the trio of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, then you were mostly correct. While it is that trifecta, they look very different from the birds we’re used to. The three of them are duking it out around the tree, when your Rotom Phone beeps, drawing their attention, at which point the three of them scatter.
After the cutscene, you answer the phone call from, it turns out, Peony. Just as he prepares to ask you a question, a news flash pops up on his television, saying some bird Pokémon are on the loose - a ‘pointy-feathered one’ in the Wild Area, a ‘fiery-lookin’ one’ on the Isle of Armor, and a ‘fancy, graceful one’ in the Crown Tundra. Peony correctly deduces these are the birds from Legendary Clue 3, and grandly titles this quest ‘A Legendary Tree for a Legendary Three!’ Peony then forgets why he called you in the first place, and hangs up, leaving you to update Legendary Clue 3 with the birds’ locations. You can go after the birds in any order - we’ll go in Pokédex order and start with Articuno here in the Crown Tundra.
Crown Tundra
Articuno can be found in the Crown Tundra. Head to the Snowslide Slope, and make your way towards the top of the route, near where it connects to the Tunnel to the Top. You’ll see Articuno hovering amongst some trees, looking down towards the Iceberg Ruins. When you get close, it’ll disappear in a puff of smoke, then split into three seemingly identical copies. It is possible to tell them apart by looking at the tail - one is swirling at a slightly different timing to the other two. If you get it wrong, Articuno will fly off into a different area of the Crown Tundra, where you can repeat the process. If you are correct, Articuno will vanish again, then spawn on top of you, beginning your battle.
Galarian Articuno, the Cruel Pokémon, is a Psychic-type and Flying-type Pokémon, and is a tricky customer to catch. It is also coded to never be a shiny Pokémon. Galarian Articuno has a naturally high special attack stat of 125, so it can already dish out hefty damage, and it has the ability Competitive, which raises its special attack two stages if one of its stats are lowered, so trying to reduce the damage output with status moves is a no go. Psycho Shift adds to this frustration, as it transfers any status conditions it has onto its opponent, making it tough to slow down with paralysis or burn. Putting it to sleep can work, although obviously is not permanent, as with freezing it, and it can freeze you in return with its signature move Freezing Glare. If you accidentally knock it out or have to flee, Articuno will simply fly off to another area of the Crown Tundra for you to find again. Otherwise whittle down its HP until you’re comfortable throwing balls, and hope it stays in!
Once you’ve caught Articuno, you’ll update the status of Legendary Clue 3 and receive the customary call from Peony, congratulating you on your progress, and urging you to catch the other birds. With business taken care of in the Crown Tundra, it’s time to leave the DLC area and go to the Wild Area.
Wild Area
Fly to the Meetup Spot at the southern end of the Wild Area, and head east towards Lake Miloch. You should see Zapdos fairly quickly, just minding its own business, but when you approach it it’ll start speeding away from you, counter-clockwise around Lake Axewell. Approach it again and it’ll charge off once more, beginning a chase around the Wild Area as you try to keep up. Don’t worry if you hit a different encounter - Zapdos will wait for you to catch up before setting off again. Once you’ve done a complete loop, Zapdos will stand still, and you can start the battle (it is also possible to catch up to it beforehand and start the battle then).
Galarian Zapdos, the Strong Legs Pokémon, is a dual Fighting-type and Flying-type Pokémon, and like Articuno is coded to never be shiny. It is a fast physical attacker, with 125 base attack, and it has the ability Defiant, the physical version of Competitive, which boosts its attack by two stages whenever you inflict a stat drop, making using status moves or moves with secondary effects unwise. It uses Focus Energy to boost its critical hit rate, its signature move Thunderous Kick always drops your defense by one stage, and lowering its HP, the usual tactic for catching legendary Pokémon, is fraught with danger as Reversal gets stronger the less HP it has. In short, if you’re not prepared it can quickly sweep through your team. Burning it will both cut its attack in half and improve the catch rate, and using Ghost-type Pokémon immune to its Fighting-type moves is also a sound strategy, as is inflicting other status conditions like sleep or paralysis. As with Articuno, even if you run, get knocked out, or knock it out accidentally, you will still be able to start the encounter again, although it will flee to a different part of the Wild Area.
Once you’ve successfully captured Zapdos, updated Legendary Clue 3, and received the customary phone call from Peony, we can take a trip out to the Isle of Armor for the last of the three birds, Moltres.
Isle of Armor
Take a flying taxi to the Isle of Armor station, and you’ll see Moltres start flying away from you. If you head left straight away, you can cut it off next to the Digging Ma. Whistle to attract its attention, and it’ll initiate a battle. If you can’t get there in time, you can fly back to the station and start again, or try to find it elsewhere on the island.
Galarian Moltres, the Malevolent Pokémon, is a Dark-type and Flying-type Pokémon, and cannot appear as a shiny Pokémon. Its outstanding stat is its special defense, at 125, but with 100 special attack it can still pose a threat. It has the ability Berserk, which boosts its special attack one stage when it drops below half HP, and Nasty Plot boosts special attack two stages, drastically increasing its damage output. Status conditions like paralysis can help to slow it down, especially as its signature move Fiery Wrath has a 20% flinch chance, and putting it to sleep could also help. Using moves that reduce its attack and special attack are viable here, as its ability will not punish you in the same way Articuno and Zapdos could. Just like the other birds, if you fail the encounter for whatever reason, it will simply respawn on the island and you can start again from scratch.
After catching Moltres, you’ll jot down your progress on Legendary Clue, and be prompted to return to Peony and report your findings, so let’s do just that.
Freezington
Take a flying taxi to Freezington and you’ll be dropped right outside the Freeze Inn. Go inside and tell Peony that you’ve caught each bird, and while they don’t quite look like what he expected, as he was evidently expecting the Kantonian rather than Galarian variants. Nevertheless once you’ve told him about all three, he’ll mark Legendary Clue 3 as completed, bringing an end to this quest.
If you’ve completed all three Legendary Clues, you and Peony will have a conversation about all the adventures you've had, thank you for tackling his ‘Adven-tour’ head on, and hand you his rare League Card by way of thanks.
It is at this point that Peonia enters, saying that she’s had her fill of Dynamax Adventures and is ready to join her father on one of his tours. The problem, of course, is that you’ve already completed them, so while he tries to find some more he gives Nia a Gold Expedition Uniform. Dismayed by what she sees as her father overreaching and being too clingy, she turns the uniform over to you to keep, and heads back to the Max Lair, with Peony haring off after his daughter, ending the main plotlines of the Crown Tundra as the screen fades to black and ‘The End’.
Or is it? After the game returns, you’ll see a hidden item in the doorway, Legendary Clue? - which has a photo attached showing a shining hole opening above the Max Lair. Perhaps there’s more mysteries to unravel after all.
