Walkthrough:The Crown Tundra/Part 5
Swords of Justice
The first time you leave Freezington by the exit to Frostpoint Field next to the Freeze Inn, you’ll trigger a small cutscene showing a set of footprints next to a tree (there’s a good chance you may have activated this already). Go and investigate the footprints and Professor Sonia will appear, evidently looking for them, but surprised to see you. She explains that there are some Pokémon that prefer to live in isolation, and the Crown Tundra is the perfect environment for them, with its much lower footfall. Sonia has hypothesized that a trio of Legendary Pokémon might be living here, with the footprints as proof.
Interact with the footprints, and you’ll see that it’s evidence of the Iron Will Pokémon, and that you’ve found 2% of the data you’ll need to track it. Sonia’s theory is that the Iron Will, Cavern, and Grassland Pokémon are all here in the Crown Tundra - the Unova Legendary trio of Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, known collectively as the Swords of Justice. The footprints are evidence of her theory, and if you can obtain 100% of the data needed to track them, by finding 50 sets of footprints, then Sonia could use her Pokémon Finder to figure out the habitats where they reside.
Sonia isn’t too keen on the cold climes of the Crown Tundra, however, so she heads inside to a house in Freezington where she’ll be staying to continue her research, leaving you to do the dirty work tracking and investigating the footprints.
Head down towards the Giant's Bed, keeping to the left of the rock that splits the path in two. Next to the wall on the left hand side, just before the Pokémon Den, you should see another set of footprints, angled in the direction of the den. Check them out, and you’ll see there’s a slight green tinge to them. It’s evidence of the Grassland Pokémon, Virizion, marking 2% completion. If you continue to the Pokémon Den, the direction in which the footprints were pointing, you’ll find another set. Continue following the trail of footprints, ending at the tree on the bottom left of the slope, just before you transition into the Giant's Bed. If you’ve found all of them to this point, you should have 12% of data for Virizion already, before going into the Giant's Bed.
Giant's Bed
Enter the Giant's Bed and head eastwards, towards the Snowslide Slope. Stay tight to the wall on your right, and follow the curve round to a Pokémon Den in amongst a patch of tall grass. On the edge of the grass you should find your next set of footprints for the Grassland Pokémon. As before, follow the direction of the footprints to pick up the trail, which goes north around the rock formation, into the open field below the other section of Frostpoint Field, and then bends round to the ruined buildings, where you saw the Mayor earlier in the story.
The footprints take you below the first ruins (while still staying on the plateau), before snaking to go round the top of the second set of buildings, behind the crops, and back down to the center afterwards. Snake around the rock next to the Pokémon Den slightly south, then dip into the ruin with the berry tree to locate a set of prints in the corner.
Continue east, finding the next set near the tree, then stay tight to the north wall next to the tall grass for the next couple of sets. Move on to the small lake, loop around the south side, picking up more on the way, then find another set on the edge of the cliff that drops to the larger body of water. Head onto the water, and go to the island to find a set of footprints in between the tree and the berry tree, then head back to the mainland and pick up the set in the corner between the lake and the cliff.
Hug the wall, and follow along to find some more sets of footprints, and all being well you should hit 100% just in front of the Pokémon Den. Don’t worry if you’ve missed some along the way - there’s actually more than fifty sets, and if needs be you can continue forwards until you reach the magic number, zigzagging across the path before turning up to the Snowslide Slope by which point you should hopefully have picked up the requisite numbers.
Once you reach fifty, all the other footprints for the Grassland Pokémon will disappear, and you’ll be notified to go back to Freezington to talk to Professor Sonia. Take a flying taxi back, and tell her you’ve found 100% of the date you need, and using her Pokémon Finder, she’ll tell you it can be found in the Giant's Bed.
To find Virizion, exit to the Giant's Bed next to the Iron Ruins, and follow the south wall, down to the Pokémon Den where we picked up the trail earlier. Head down the slope towards the Old Cemetery, and you should see Virizion near the Pokémon Den on the left hand side.
Virizion, the Grassland Pokémon, is a dual Grass-type and Fighting-type Pokémon, and carries the moves Sacred Sword, Swords Dance, Leaf Blade, and Close Combat. An equally adept physical or special attacker, it carries an all-physical set, with Swords Dance able to double its attack, STAB on all its offensive moves, and Sacred Sword that will ignore your own stat changes. It has the ability Justified, which increases its attack when hit with a Dark-type move, so steering clear of those is wise. Burning it will nullify its attacking prowess, while paralyzing it or putting it to sleep will give you extra turns to catch it. A move like Charm, that cuts its attack, is also a strong idea.
Don’t worry if you knock it out, wipe, or flee the battle - Virizion can be respawned by going back to Sonia and asking about its location, and it will then reappear at its previous spot. Unlike the other Legendary Pokémon we’ve seen so far, Virizion and the other Swords of Justice can possibly be shiny Pokémon.
With Virizion now accounted for, it’s time to start hunting for our other sets of footprints. Take a flying taxi to the bottom of the Giant's Bed and you’ll be dropped off outside the Rock Peak Ruins. Go past the tall grass to the area where you connect with the main section of the Giant's Bed, and head down to the river where you’ll see a collection of different colored footprints. Interact with the first set of blue footprints - evidence of the Iron Will Pokémon, taking you to 4%, after the set we picked up at the start with Professor Sonia.
Collect the footprints and follow the trail north, which will go via a tree on the right next to the path that leads to the Rock Peak Ruins. Continue north, staying close to the cliff on your right to find more footprints, until you reach another tree, where the Giant's Foot begins. Hoover up the nearby footprints before entering the Giant's Foot.
In the Giant's Foot, you should find some footprints just before the patch of tall grass, taking you to approximately thirty percent, depending on whether you’ve missed some along the way. Don’t worry if you have - as with Virizion, there are more than fifty sets of footprints to find, so even if you missed some you should still be fine.
Pick up the trail on the other side of the tall grass, where the footprints curve towards your left, in the direction of the Roaring-Sea Caves. Go down the river, and come out at the end to the right, where you should see the next sets of footprints. The light blue of the footprints show up really clearly in the cave, so follow them round until you reach the section with multiple branching paths. Although it leads to a dead-end, take the first path to your left to find some more footprints, clear the hub of any extra prints you can find, before going down the next path.
Continue tracking the footprints, which snake their way through the Roaring-Sea Caves, taking care to fully explore the more open areas for extra prints, and all being well you should hit 100% just as you exit into the Frigid Sea. If you’re still slightly short, the beach onto which you emerge has plenty, and they continue round into Three-Point Pass as well.
Once you’ve got all the data you need, take a Flying Taxi back to Freezington and pay a visit to Professor Sonia. If you’ve not visited her since catching Virizion, she’ll give you 10 Exp. Candy S as a reward, as well as affirming her certainty that the other Pokémon must be here as well. Tell her that you’ve collected enough data, and using her Pokémon Finder, she’ll pinpoint the location of the Iron Will Pokémon to be the Frigid Sea.
Frigid Sea
Head back to the Frigid Sea, either through the Roaring-Sea Caves or by flying to Three-Point Pass, and go to the large island in the centre. At the top of the island, beyond the tree, you should be able to see your target: Cobalion.
Cobalion, the Iron Will Pokémon, is a Steel-type and Fighting-type Pokémon, with a moveset consisting of Sacred Sword, Swords Dance, Iron Head, and Close Combat. Cobalion, like Virizion, is a mixed attacker, although running an entirely physical set, with its standout stat its high physical defense. As with Virizion, burning Cobalion to cut its attack in half is potent, especially if it uses Swords Dance, while sleep and paralysis are also strong status options. With the Justified ability, avoiding using Dark-type moves is sensible, as is dropping its attack stat with a move like Charm. Be careful of Close Combat, as it drops both Cobalion’s defense and special defense, so you might deal more damage than you were expecting. If you run, get knocked out, or knock Cobalion out, the encounter can be restarted by going back to Sonia. Cobalion can also appear as a shiny Pokémon in battle.
With Cobalion secured, it’s time to turn our attention to the final member of the Swords of Justice trio. Fly back to the Rock Peak Ruins, then head out to the main section of the Giant's Bed. By the arch on your right, you should see a small crop of yellow flowers by the patch of tall grass, concealing a set of brown footprints. This is your first evidence of the Cavern Pokémon, making up two percent of the data required. You can find another set close by, as well as three more by the entrance to the river. Collect them, then traverse the river on your Rotom Bike, exiting at Ballimere Lake.
You should find your next set as soon as you make landfall, another soon after, and two more if you investigate the tree and the bush over on the ledge to your right. Cross over to the ramp that leads to the lake itself for another set of footprints, before doubling back to the patch of tall grass with the berry tree in the center, next to the river. You can find some prints in the clearing, and another set in a small patch of purple flowers after exiting the tall grass in the direction of Lakeside Cave, with another before the Pokémon Den.
The path then splits in two, an upper route on the left and lower one below it to the right. Take the low road, and find some prints next to the tree by the middle of the tall grass. Continue on down the path, nabbing any prints along the way, and you’ll reach the Lakeside Cave with around 40% of the required data.
Lakeside Cave
Venture into the cave, and pick up the trail on your right, and follow it into the clearing. As with the Roaring-Sea Caves, you can find footprints dotted throughout the more open areas, so make sure to investigate thoroughly to make sure you don’t miss anything. Once you’re happy you’ve found everything, head up the ramp to the upper section of the cave, continuing to check the footprints on the way, before emerging outside.
Once you’ve left the confines of the cave, bear left towards the tall grass, scanning some extra sets before finding another in the area with the berry surrounded by tall grass. This should leave you just shy of 100 percent tracked. Go back to the lower path, and go to the ramp that leads to Dyna Tree Hill. You should find the last few sets up prints you require there, as well as some extras, taking you to the 100% you need.
Once you’ve obtained all the necessary data, fly back to Freezington and speak to Professor Sonia. If this is the first time you’ve spoken since catching Cobalion, she will congratulate you on doing so, and award you 10 Exp. Candy M as a thanks for catching the second of the Legendary trio. Let her know you’ve tracked 100% of data, and she’ll use her Pokémon Finder to locate the Cavern Pokémon, which is residing in Lakeside Cave.
Go back to Lakeside Cave (Dyna Tree Hill is the closest fly point), and in the open section in the centre, to the left of the ramp as you come down (or right as you come up) you can see your target, Terrakion.
Terrakion, the Cavern Pokémon, is a Rock-type and Fighting-type Pokémon, and knows the moves Sacred Sword, Swords Dance, Stone Edge, and Close Combat. While Terrakion isn’t quite as bulky as Virizion or Cobalion, it trades this off for a higher attack stat of 129, which it can boost further through the use of Swords Dance. The usual tricks of using status conditions to deny it turns with sleep or paralysis, or burning it to cut its physical damage output, are wise moves, especially with powerful high critical hit rate moves such as Stone Edge that ignore any stat reductions you might try to give it. Sacred Sword also ignores your stat changes, so boosting your own defenses is less impactful. Terrakion’s type combination does give it a whopping seven weaknesses, so there are plenty of good ways to whittle its HP down, although operating with caution is sensible so that you don’t accidentally knock it out. Don’t worry if you don’t catch it for any reason, however - talking to Sonia again will get it to respawn. Terrakion also has the possibility of being a shiny Pokémon.
Once you’ve caught Terrakion, it’s time to pay Sonia another visit. Fly back to Freezington and talk to her, where she’ll be over the moon with your discovery, and gift you 10 Exp. Candy L as a thank you for catching the third Legendary. Sonia and Yamper then head back home to more temperate weather, but we’ve still got more to uncover with the Swords of Justice.
Ballimere Lake
Fly to Dyna Tree Hill in the middle of Ballimere Lake, go down the slope, then enter the lake itself via the ramp on your right hand side. Head to the small island ahead of you, and go to the pot behind the tree on your left. You should see a new set of footprints that haven’t been there before, and that look slightly different to the others we’ve seen. Put the three Swords of Justice, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, in your party, then set up a Pokémon camp. Open the camp menu, and cook your party a curry - it doesn’t matter which, or how well you cook it. Exit your camp, and you should see a brand new Pokémon has spawned on the island - the Mythical Pokémon Keldeo.
Keldeo, the Colt Pokémon, is a Water-type and Fighting-type Pokémon, and will know the moves Sacred Sword, Swords Dance, Hydro Pump, and Secret Sword. Unlike the other Swords of Justice, Keldeo’s strength is its special attack stat, although it does still have some physical attacking prowess, especially after setting up with Swords Dance. Trying to nullify its offensive power with stat-reducing moves, like Charm on the physical side or Eerie Impulse to drop its special attack, will give you extra staying power, as will afflicting it with status conditions. While you need to have the trio when cooking to spawn Keldeo, once it has spawned you can switch them out of your party for other options should you wish. Keldeo is also at a slightly lower level, 65 rather than 70, so be sure to factor that into your damage calculations when lowering its HP. It is possible to completely nullify any damage Keldeo can do with Jellicent - as a Ghost-type Pokémon it is immune to Fighting-type moves, and if it has the ability Water Absorb then Hydro Pump will heal it instead of hurt it, leaving you free to chip down Keldeo until you’re ready to catch it.
Keldeo, unlike Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, is coded to never be a shiny Pokémon, but it will respawn if you fail to catch it. Having said that, putting in a safety save before you start the encounter so you can reset to avoid using items or dropping money if you lose is sensible. With Keldeo safely captured, along with the Swords of Justice trio, this ties a bow on this portion of our adventure.
