Blurb

This is a prequel story written to commemorate the release of the Detective Pikachu video game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems!

As a self-proclaimed great detective, Pikachu can somehow understand what people are saying. His only wish is to meet someone who can understand him in the same way.

One day, an Eevee comes to the great Detective Pikachu and asks him to find the culprit who messed up the yard at its home!

Plot

Detective Pikachu muses about life in Ryme City - while he appreciates the food, people, and Pokémon, he's well aware of the criminal activity that goes on in the area. A few months prior, Pikachu and his partner Harry Goodman were caught up in an accident while investigating a case. In the aftermath, Pikachu lost his memory and Harry went missing. Pikachu has the ability to understand both people and Pokémon, and intends to use this to find clues to Harry's whereabouts. However, people do not understand him, and he wishes he knew someone who could.

Pikachu lives at the detective agency of Mike Baker, one of Harry's friends. Other residents include Baker's partner Accelgor, as well as Baker's assistant Amanda Blackstone and her partner Fletchling. Pikachu overhears a conversation between Amanda and Baker, where they mention that Harry's son Tim Goodman is due to arrive that afternoon. Pikachu ponders if Tim is as anxious to find Harry as he is. Pikachu takes a cookie from a table, but is berated by Amanda for taking snacks meant for clients. Pikachu goes downstairs to the Hi-Hat Café, managed by Pablo Millan and his partner Ludicolo, and gets a cup of coffee.

Due to Pikachu's inability to communicate with people, he has opened a detective agency exclusively for Pokémon clients, to help practice his detective skills. His client today is Eevee, who is initially looking for a handyman. Pikachu bemoans the local Pokémon's lack of awareness of what a detective is, but hears out the request. Eevee's partner is a rich man with lots of Pokémon, and is currently on a cruise with his Ninetales. However, in his absence, a number of holes have been dug in the garden. Eevee wants Pikachu's help to both fix the garden and find who is responsible.

Eevee brings Pikachu to its partner's mansion, where Pikachu observes seven 12-inch holes in the ground. Upon closer inspection, the holes appear to connect in a large tunnel system. Pikachu sees a shadow moving in the tunnels, but falls in before he can make it out, and is rescued by a nearby Torterra, who then goes to a nearby lake. A Drilbur pops out of one of the holes, and states that it visits the garden occasionally to eat the berries that grow there. However, it harvested more berries than it could eat the night before. Pikachu quickly reasons that the extra berries were buried near a tree, but that the tree had disappeared somehow. Drilbur confirms the theory, and that it could not find the berries this morning, frantically digging near several trees to no avail. It requests that Pikachu help find the missing berries, though still mistakes him for a handyman.

To gather testimony of the previous night, Pikachu interviews some Pidove and Starly in the area, though they offer nothing of importance. He finally talks to the only Rowlet in the yard, who says that it saw a mound of grass rise up from the garden and move towards the lake during the night. Pikachu reasons that the mound was Drilbur, and he suddenly realizes where the missing tree went.

Pikachu brings Drilbur to Torterra at the lake, and asks if this is a spot where Torterra regularly drinks and sleeps. Torterra confirms this, and Pikachu concludes that Drilbur's berries are located nearby. In the dark of night, Drilbur likely mistook Torterra for a tree and hid its berries there.

Pikachu goes to the mansion to tell Eevee that the case is resolved, though doesn't ask for payment, stating that this case was a special promotion for the opening of his agency. Eevee thanks him, but still believes Pikachu to be a handyman.

Pikachu rests on a bench outside the detective agency, wishing he could handle a more-substantial case. Tim has still yet to arrive, so Pikachu takes a nap to pass the time.
