Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon cloned from a Mew. His Japanese voice actors are 市村正親 Masachika Ichimura (adult) and 瀧本富士子 Fujiko Takimoto (child). His English voice actors are Phillip Bartlett (Mewtwo Strikes Back) and Dan Green (Mewtwo Returns)
The story of Mewtwo is chronicled in The Birth of Mewtwo (CD drama), Mewtwo Strikes Back (movie), and Mewtwo Returns (TV special). He made a brief appearance in the Pokémon television series in The Battle of the Badge when Giovanni used him to defeat Gary Oak.
Approximately twenty years before the present, Team Rocket discovered that a Mew was living in the Andes Mountains. Many years later, under the orders of its new leader, Giovanni, Rocket members went back to the area to search for fossils. They succeeded in finding an eyelash belonging to Mew. Giovanni asked Dr. Fuji to clone Mew for him. Fuji agreed because he wanted to use Team Rocket's research funds to attempt to clone his deceased daughter, Amber.
One month after the discovery of the eyelash, Mewtwo was successfully created and was stored on New Island. At this point, he was still not fully grown and lived in a large test tube alongside a tube containing Amber. Fuji and Giovanni thought Mewtwo was sleeping inside his tube, but he was able to communicate telepathically with Amber. However, because the willpower of a human is not as strong as a Pokémon's, the Amber clone died due to exhaustion from being cloned.
Eventually, Mewtwo fully matured and broke out of his test tube. Those responsible for his creation were happy that they succeeded in their goal of creating the world's most powerful Pokémon. Enraged and confused about the circumstances that led to his creation and powers, Mewtwo attacked the scientists on New Island. A computer attacked and attempted to kill him to protect the scientists, but Mewtwo quickly recovered and destroyed the island and everyone on it.
Later, Giovanni found Mewtwo and convinced him to help with Team Rocket's goal of controlling the world. Mewtwo's power was harnessed in armor. Eventually Mewtwo became tired of being used by Giovanni. He developed a strong hatred for humans, who he thought were weak beings only interested in power and greed, and he also despised the Pokémon who served humans. He escaped from Giovanni, destroying Team Rocket headquarters in the process. He relocated to New Island, his birthplace. There he issued a challenge to several strong Pokémon trainers, including Ash Ketchum. Only a handful of trainers made the hard trip to the island, and Mewtwo challenged them to prove his superiority. However, before he could defeat the trainers and move out into the world, Mew appeared. The two Pokémon fought and only stopped when Ash's life was put in danger. Mew convinced Mewtwo to stop his destructive rampage. Mewtwo, wanting to find himself, erased the memories of those present and left New Island for Johto.
A few years later, Giovanni found Mewtwo's hiding place and began a plan to capture him once again. However, this plan was foiled when he once again met with Ash, who did not remember his previous encounter with Mewtwo. Giovanni restrained Mewtwo, but Ash and friends helped him to escape and defeat Giovanni. At the end of the ordeal, Mewtwo decided to move throughout the world searching for the meaning of his life.
In the epilogue to Mewtwo Returns and in some TV series opening sequences and movie previews, Mewtwo has been seen wearing a plain brown cape and moving across rooftops at night.
