Kai (Japanese: ダイ Dai) is a Pokémon Trainer who appeared in The Rise of Darkrai. Though he was not referred to by name in the dub, Pokémon.com has since released his name.

History

Battling Maury

He, along with Maury and Allegra, challenged Ash and his friends to a battle; specifically, he went up against Dawn and her Piplup, which began as a puff-Contest (befitting their species' nature).

According to the end credits, he also participated in the Alamos Town Contest, where he defeated Maury in the second round, and was likely defeated by Allegra in the finals as he was on the stage with her when she received the Ribbon.

Pokémon

Empoleon
Kai's Empoleon

Kai's only known Pokémon is an Empoleon which he first used to battle Dawn's Piplup where despite Empoleon being the final evolution of Piplup, found itself unable to keep up with Piplup's Contest moves. It later fell victim to Darkrai's Dark Void and participated in the Alamos Contest where it got Kai to the final only to lose to Allegra and her Infernape.

Empoleon's known moves are Drill Peck and Ice Beam.

Kai appears in the manga adaptation of The Rise of Darkrai. Here he is a veteran Trainer drafted by Baron Alberto to defeat Darkrai, but despite he battles along with Allegra and Maury, they are no match for the powerful Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Kai, Maury, and Allegra each own the final form of one Sinnoh starter Pokémon.
  • Though he was not referred to by name in the dub, Pokémon.com has since revealed that his name is Kai.
  • Kai's character design resembles that of Empoleon's color scheme.
