Trivia
- Despite being based on a bronze bell, the only sound move that it learns is Snore. However, dōtaku (the type of bell which it is based off) don't have a clapper inside. The bell itself is stationary and is rung by striking a free-swinging beam suspended from the ceiling against it.
- Bronzong and its pre-evolution are the only Pokémon with the ability Levitate that can have another ability, Heatproof. However, Giratina can alternate between the abilities Levitate and Pressure when it changes between its Altered Forme and Origin Forme.
- Despite being blue, it is listed in the green category. This also applies to its pre-evolution.
- A possible explanation is, in the Japanese viewpoint, some shades of blue are referred to as green, and vice-versa.
- Oddly enough, its shiny color is green (the color of oxidized bronze).
- Both of its abilities affect its weakness to super-effective moves, allowing it to have just one 2× weakness, provided that its ability is in effect.
- As both abilities are used at the same time in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, this means that in those games, Bronzong doesn't have any weaknesses (it shares this trait with its pre-evolution).
- Bronzong is the only Pokémon to learn Sunny Day naturally that is never a Template:Type2 or Template:Type2 and one of two (the other being Lugia) to learn Rain Dance the same way and is not, nor is any Pokémon in its family, a Template:Type2 or Template:Type2.
Origin
Bronzong is based on a dōtaku, Japanese bells used to pray for good harvests. They are often decorated with patterns representing nature and were buried, occasionally with bronze mirrors and weapons, in isolated locations.
Bronzong and the fact that it evolves from Bronzor also seems to be based on an old Japanese myth present in the book Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things by Lafcadio Hearn. The priests of Mugenyama wanted to forge a bell for their temple, so they asked the local women to donate their bronze mirrors for this purpose. A woman contributed her mirror, but later regretted it. Because of her repentance, the mirror wouldn't melt in the furnace until she killed herself. Before her suicide, she said that whoever would break the bell would be given great wealth by her ghost. A multitude of people tried to break the bell by ringing it furiously, so the tired priests managed to roll it down a hill into a swamp.
Name origin
Its English name is a combination of "bronze" and either "gong", a type of musical instrument, or "dong", the sound of a bell. Its Japanese name is a portmanteau of the words 銅鐸 dōtaku, meaning bronze bell, and どんどん dondon, the sound a bell produces.
In other languages
- German: Bronzong
- French: Archeodong - From archeo- (Greek for "ancient") and dong.
- Korean: 동탁군 Dongtakgun
- Chinese (Taiwan): 青銅鐘 Qīng Tóng Zhōng - Literally "Bronze bell". 青 also means blue/green.
