<!-- Detailed synopsis goes here. -->
<i>The Grand Festival is underway in Slateport. Harley asks May if they can train together for the main competition, and May agrees. She's not the only one training; Ash is also training Snorunt, but its Ice Beam hits a Pokémon coordinator named Anthony. Anthony was planning to compete in the Grand Festival with his Swalot... until three people stole his ribbons!
May just easily beat the preliminaries, so she and her friends chill at the Pokemon Center while she gets everyone healed awaiting the next round. Once again, Harley finds May and starts going on, and then eventually even proposes that they practice training together for the Contest battle, to which she agrees.

As Drew is polishing off Roselia and Masquerain, May and her friends walk by, pumped up than ever. Brock, who is reading the guidebook, then informs May that next round will be a double battle, so it’s best for May to look her Pokemon over at who’s in the best condition, and decide.
The first round of the main competition begins with single Pokémon performances. Harley shows off his scary Banette as Jessie prepares to take the stage—as Anthony! She took his ribbons and disguised herself as him, but Officer Jenny, Ash, and the real Anthony are all waiting for her. Before she can get in a fight, James and Meowth exercise the better part of valor and drag her away.

Ash is in another area, training with Snorunt and showing off to Max. However, just as Ash tells Snorunt to fire its Ice Beam, a small speck of dust flies in its face... causing Snorunt to sneeze an Ice Beam across the field. This Ice Beam is directed right at a trainer’s Swalot! Luckily, the chubby trainer jumps in the way to defend his Swalot, getting a bit of frost on his butt. However, Ash has his trusty Fire type, Torkoal help melt that off. After that, they introduce each other, and the boy is a Coordinator called Tonpei. Unfortunately, he’s in a pretty bad situation. After a run-in with three people, he lost his Contest Pass as well as his Ribbons and all! Typical act would be to agree to help, so... Max goes to get Jenny.
Now it's May's turn. Following Harley's advice, she has Skitty use Assist over and over, until Skitty performs a Petal Dance and confuses itself! Harley is delighted; Drew, who overhears him, is not. May orders Skitty to Double Slap itself back to normal and finish off with an impressive Blizzard. She apologizes to Harley for going against his advice, but Drew reveals that Harley was only pretending to be her friend to sabotage her.

Jessie’s excitedly dancing around with the five Ribbons, glad she finally has the material to enter. She gets a bit too hyper, does a little dance with Meowth, and imagines being the top Coordinator as usual. James, however, then reminds her that she doesn’t exactly have any PokeBlocks, and has yet to train well enough. Plus, the data still remains in the Ribbon and Pass as to who they belong to, as James finds Tonpei while looking him up.
Drew and his Masquerain receive perfect scores for their performance, as does Robert and his Milotic. May just makes it into the second round, where she'll face Harley in a double-battle!</i>

Despite Harley’s secret scheming to win the round, May trusts him and sends out her Pokemon in front of him. As they all do their cheers, Beautifly is interested in showing off, but Beautifly already had both the training and the round to shine, so it’s Skitty’s turn. May starts off by having it use Assist, and uses Combusken’s Fire Spin, directly hitting Harley’s Cacturne! As Harley takes note of this, Skitty uses another Assist, this time Beautifly’s Silver Wind. Harley acts all impressed, butters her up with how Assist and her team give her perfect combinations. Drew secretly watches the whole display from behind, thinking to himself what idiots they are for showing each other what they’ll use before the round...
Plot
Nurse Joy returns May's Pokémon, all fully healed after their check-up. Brock asks for a check-up of his own, but Nurse Joy simply walks away, leaving Brock dejected. As May prepares to leave she is approached by Harley, who asks if they can training together. May agrees, asserting that a partner will make practice easier.

Max and Jenny finally come back and find Ash and Tonpei sulking about the lost stuff. While Tonpei repeats his story to them, Max then reminds him that they’re probably going to use the Ribbons and pass to get into the Contest. With that, they would be found out and forced to confess, because they have Tonpei’s data so they’d come up as his...
Drew is groomer his Masquerain and Drew when Brock leads May, Harley, and Caroline past, explaining that she will need to get her Pokémon ready for the next stage of the Grand Festival, which consists of two-on-two Contest Battles. May is initially surprised but becomes confident that they will prevail. Meanwhile, on the beach, Ash, Max, and Snorunt are preparing to train Ice Beam again, but as the targets are finished, Snorunt sneezes and fires dozens of small Ice Beams at a nearby Swalot. Swalot's Trainer, Anthony, desperately leaps in front of his Pokémon, and his backside is frozen solid. After Torkoal thaws him out, Anthony explains that he was entered in the Hoenn Grand Festival, but he lost his Contest Pass and his Ribbon case to a strange trio. Ash boldly asserts that they will help Anthony track down the thieves.

As the second round starts, Tonpei waits in the hall with Ash and Jenny to catch the culprit. All of May’s friends are watching, including Savannah, Timmy, Kanata, Abby, Norman, and even the twins from Pacifidlog. As Vivian announces and presents the Ribbon Cup, there are five judges this time. Contesta, Skizo, and three Joys. Before they start, she introduces each of them and lets them all have a word (Brock’s mind goes crazy with the clones).
Meanwhile, Jessie declares that she will win the Grand Festival, with five Ribbons pinned to her top. She imagines being on magazine covers, setting fashion trends, and getting a recording contract. MTR says he would rather be a simple thief with no pressure, and Jessie shakes him violently to remind him who is in charge. James informs Jessie that using the stolen Contest Pass will result in Anthony's face being the one on the cover, which Jessie had forgotten.

In the waiting room, Harley evilly reminds May that although they trained together, he does plan to win. While he’s at it, he does try to pull a certain trick, but May doesn’t fall for it this time. In the alley where Team Rocket are hiding, Jessie disguises herself as Tonpei (actually doing a pretty good job), and proceeds to enter.
May asks May, May, May, and May which of them wants to team up with May for their first practice, with the latter three cheering excitedly while Munchlax sleeps. May asks Harley if the others can take it in turns, which he says is fine, and May picks Skitty to go first. Brock questions May’s judgment, though she confidently responds that it was Beautifly’s Silver Wind that got her this far in the first place. Drew and his Pokémon watch the match. Harley invites May to make the first move, and Skitty's Assist becomes Combusken's Fire Spin, pushing Harley back several paces. Assist becomes Silver Wind, which causes Harley to run over and seize May's hand, complimenting her on the move. Harley asserts that Beautifly's Silver Wind and Skitty's Assist could pull off an unbeatable appeal. May is unsure, saying that Assist is too unpredictable to place her faith in. Harley reassures her that the appeal of Assist is its unpredictability, and May agrees with Harley, choosing to use Skitty instead of Beautifly in the first round. Caroline thinks the strategy is risky, and Drew agrees as he walks off.

At long last, Vivian says a few final words, sets off some confetti on stage, announcing that once again this round will start with another appeal stage. First trainer comes with a beautiful Ninetales, using Flamethrower. Next up is Harley, using not Cacturne, but Banette. Banette greets the audience with an evil cackle, which scares even Vivian. May notices it take over the screen in the waiting room and gets a bit nervous, but then it calms down and uses Will-O’-Wisp to create some dancing blue flames. Then, Banette uses Thunder, which creates a cool illusion yet shakes the stage and scares the audience. This gets him an 89 this time.
Ash, Pikachu, and Anthony have had no luck finding the thieves. After Max alerts Officer Jenny to the situation, Jenny reassures Anthony that he can still compete if he reports to the main office. However, Anthony is too devastated by the loss of his Contest Ribbons to compete. Max pipes up and realizes that with Anthony's Contest Pass also stolen, the thief must be planning to enter and all they need to do is check for someone whose picture and face do not match. Ash, Anthony, and Jenny agree to the plan, and Jenny tells them all to get to the main stage.

After that, a bunch of random Coordinators go using some cool Pokemon techniques, and finally, it’s Tonpei’s turn. As Jessie runs down the hall disguised, Ash, Max, Jenny, and the real Tonpei block her path. She doesn’t give up, but Tonpei then has his Swalot use Swallow, and it devours Jessie up. As she struggles inside for a little bit, it finally spits her out. Jessie’s about to fight back, but James and Meowth run off and drag her along.
The main competition round is opened, with 64 semi-finalists out of the original 247. Ash, Anthony, Jenny, Swalot, and Pikachu are watching the corridor while Norman, Kenny, Kelly, Joshua and Erica, Timmy Grimm, Chaz, Dr. Abby, Savannah and Sandra watch the competition from the comfort of their respective homes. Vivian Meridian introduces the panel of judges, formed by Raoul Contesta, Mr. Sukizo, and three Nurse Joy. As usual, Brock declares his love at the top of his lungs, much to the surprise of Caroline and the chagrin of Max, who yanks him back into his seat. Side-stage, May is helping search for the thief. She informs Harley of the situation, and he replies that he hates the thought of dishonesty around them. Nearby, Jessie has fashioned a decent Anthony costume and plans to enter in his likeness, revealing her true identity later.

The crowd are already impressed enough with Swalot’s unique entrance, starting flat and bouncing into shape. After that, it uses a Sludge Bomb combined with a Bullet Seed, and after the crowd enjoys that a bit, Swalot reaches out and Swallows them both, as the stage clears. 82.
The main Appeals Round begins with a Ninetales's Flamethrower, before giving way to Harley and his Banette, who terrifies Vivian and even May side stage with its malicious smile. Banette uses Will-O-Wisp and then strikes itself with Thunder, scoring 89 out of 100. Several other Coordinators score well, an Alakazam, a Vaporeon, Sunflora, Ledian, Electrode, and Lickitung all scoring in the high seventies and eighties. Drew and May both show their confidence for moving on.

May is up now, and it’s Skitty’s turn to shine. While the crowd are impressed with it’s cuteness, it uses an Assist of Silver Wind, the exact same way Beautifly used it last time. After that it uses a bunch of other Assists, basically taking Harley’s advice as it would be a cool way to show off almost a whole team with one cute Pokemon. Razor Leaf, Flamethrower, Vine Whip, String Shot, and Whirlwind all look amazing coming from Skitty. While Skizo is impressed, Contesta isn’t quite sure whether using the same move over and over is a good idea. Anyway, Skitty’s next Assist is a surprise—Solar Beam! Niether May nor her friends recall any of her Pokemon knowing Solar Beam... but then Brock notices Munchlax sleeping in Caroline’s lap. Anyway, Skitty’s next Assist creates a Petal Dance. However, as soon as it clears, Skitty starts running in circles unconsciously! It takes May a bit to realize why it’s doing that, but Brock is well aware that Petal Dance has the side effect of confusing the user. Either way, things aren’t looking too good.
Vivian calls Anthony, while Ash, Jenny, and the real Anthony watch from the shadows for who comes out. Jessie in her best impression of a male voice, comes jogging down the corridor. As Jessie walks by, Anthony stops her in her tracks and confronts her. Meowth and James, watching from afar, are stunned by the appearance of the real Anthony, as well as Ash and Jenny. Jessie denies being an imposter only for Swalot to use Swallow then Spit Up, spitting out a now costume-less Jessie. Jenny orders her under arrest, only for Jessie to challenge her. However, before she can call out a Pokémon, James and Meowth, afraid of prison, seize her arms and drag her away. Anthony takes his place on stage with an impressive appeal by using Swalot's fluid body for an impressive entry. It smashes apart its own Sludge Bomb with Bullet Seed and Swallows the whole lot for a clean finish, earning himself 82 points.

Meanwhile, Harley is watching this in the waiting room, and realizes that she actually fell for it. He remembered her Bulbasaur well from the last Contest, and that it knew Petal Dance. Drew then confronts him about his whole scheme, and how he can actually win fairly without tricking his rivals. Either way, May then realizes that Harley tricked her into abusing Assist. So, she decides to use Doubleslap instead, which helps Skitty snap out of confusion by jumping around and waving its tail. Finally, Skitty jumps really high and uses its best attack—Blizzard, to create... well, a Blizzard below it, which turns into an incredibly tall and beautiful mound of ice. With that, Skitty lands right on the peak of it, and the crowd cheers. Unfortunately, May only gets a 79.
May comes out next, and sends out her Skitty to great applause. She orders Assist to successfully produce Silver Wind, then follows up with a range of other attacks which impresses Mr. Sukizo, but Raoul Contesta is not thrilled as Skitty is not showing its own attributes off. However, when Assist becomes Solar Beam, May is thrown off because she did not realize that any of her Pokémon knew Solar Beam. Caroline wonders if Solar Beam belongs to Munchlax, who is sleeping on her lap. May jumps back into action with an Assist that results in Petal Dance, which looks good but leaves Skitty confusion. Much to the group's horror, Skitty begins to run in circles much to the audience's amusement. May has no idea how to get Skitty back on track, as she does not want to risk Assist again. Backstage, Harley is gleeful at May's disastrous performance before he is confronted by Drew. Harley shrugs off his foul play tactic as competition. Back on stage, May is still torn and thinks Harley had her best interests at heart, but decides to ignore his advice and tell Skitty to use Double Slap on itself, breaking it out of confusion. Harley is horrified, but Drew is satisfied. May orders Skitty to finish with Blizzard, creating a towering fortress of ice. May scores 79, which has the group in doubt as to whether she can advance. Backstage, May apologizes to Harley for not following his advice, only for Drew to reveal to her that Harley knew all along that sticking with Assist would end badly for May, and purposely advised her to do so to with the intention of making her lose, with Harley admitting that Drew is correct and telling May that she was a fool for trusting him. Hurt and angry, May questions why Harley would do something so despicable, to which he replies that it was to get revenge on her for defeating him in the Purika City competition. May believes that Harley is unjust in wanting revenge for losing fair and square, but Harley shrugs her off and assures her that she will lose this competition, before shouldering her and walking off. Drew tells May that Harley was right about it being foolish for her to trust him, and that she should instead trust in her own heart and do what she knows is right, before also walking off. May visibly takes this advice to heart.

Out in the waiting room, May meets Drew and Harley. As she apologizes to Harley for taking his advice too strongly, Drew informs her that Harley was just pulling an all time low and tricking her. At first he denies it, but then he can’t help but confess how all this time he was sandbagging her and leading her on. With that dramatic confession, Harley smirks, and storms out of the room, leaving May quite irate. Drew says that he knew from the moment they met, that Harley was bad news. He’d tell more, but now it’s his turn. But, although he is her friend, he’s still her rival, so he mocks her gullibility.
Back on stage, Vivian Meridian announces the top three finishers from the Appeals Stage - third: Drew and his Hidden Power-using Masquerain. The field is covered in Bubbles, which are diverted with Silver Wind, giving Drew a standing ovation and a perfect 100. Harley snidely says it's not great, but Ash and Caroline are both amazed. First place Robert and his Milotic also advance with a perfect score. The top thirty-two are announced. Robert and Drew easily make it through with Harley, and May scrapes through as well. The Coordinators who moved on are paired up for the Double Contest Battles and May is matched with Harley.

This round Drew uses Masquerain, starting off with Hidden Power. Two rings of it form around Masquerain, and get bigger... and just as Drew snaps his fingers, they all explode indo sparkles all over the stage and audience. As they clear, the stage is filled with huge bubbles. Following that, Masquerain uses a Silver Wind at the middle, blasting the bubbles at the audience and into the sky so they can be seen at the stadium from a distance. With that, Drew bombs it with 100! May and Harley both look extremely nervous now.
On the beach that night, Jessie plans to move on to Plan C - no matter what, she is going to be in the Contest. The next day, Harley and May kick off the first lot of Double Contest Battles - Harley's Cacturne and Banette against May's Bulbasaur and Beautifly. May calls for a fair battle, but Harley's only response is that they have different views of fairness. Finally, May says that she is willing to play rough if that's what it takes to beat Harley.

With Robert and Milotic finishing off the appeal stage, Vivian announces the Coordinators moving on to the next round. Sure enough, May, Robert, Harley, and Drew are all there. As the brackets randomize for the battle rounds, May finds herself up against Harley! This is gonna be an intense round for the both of them! Later that night, TR decide to think of a new plan to crash the Festival this time...

The Grand Festival is underway in Slateport.

Drew and his Masquerain receive perfect scores for their performance, as does Robert and his Milotic. May just makes it into the second round, where she'll face Harley in a double-battle!

Plot

Nurse Joy returns May's Pokémon, all fully healed after their check-up. Brock asks for a check-up of his own, but Nurse Joy simply walks away, leaving Brock dejected. As May prepares to leave she is approached by Harley, who asks if they can practice together. May agrees, asserting that a partner will make practice easier.

Drew is grooming his Masquerain and Roselia when Brock leads May, Harley, and Caroline past, explaining that she will need to get her Pokémon ready for the next stage of the Grand Festival, which consists of two-on-two Contest Battles.

Meanwhile, Jessie declares that she will win the Grand Festival, with five Ribbons pinned to her top. She imagines being on magazine covers, setting fashion trends, and getting a recording contract. Meowth says he would rather be a simple thief with no pressure, and Jessie shakes him violently to remind him who is in charge. James informs Jessie that using the stolen Contest Pass will result in Anthony's face being the one on the cover, which Jessie had forgotten.

May asks Munchlax, Skitty, Combusken, and Bulbasaur which of them wants to team up with Beautifly for their first practice, with the latter three cheering excitedly while Munchlax sleeps. May asks Harley if the others can take it in turns, which he says is fine, and May picks Skitty to go first. Brock questions May’s judgment, though she confidently responds that it was Beautifly’s Silver Wind that got her this far in the first place. Drew and his Pokémon watch the match. Harley invites May to make the first move, and Skitty's Assist becomes Combusken's Fire Spin, pushing Cacturne back several paces.

May jumps back into action with an Assist that results in Petal Dance, which looks good but leaves Skitty confused.
