Walkthrough:The Crown Tundra/Part 2

The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed

Inside the Freeze Inn, your base of operations, you'll find Peony waiting for you. He'll explain all the legends you're going to solve and track down, starting with The King of Bountiful Harvests, before a mysterious red tree where legendary Pokémon are said to gather, dot-faced giants who sleep in ruins, and more.

Peony then anoints you as the expedition chief, so he can stay at base camp in case Nia turns up. He then hands over your Expedition Uniform, which should keep you warm in the cold climate, and three Legendary Clues, one for each of the three initial questlines. He suggests starting with Legendary Clue 1, about the King of Bountiful Harvests, in a mission he dramatically calls "The Sacred Bonds of Sovereign and Steed"!

Peony does note that he was expecting the statue to have a bigger head, as the camera keeps panning over to the table, which has a strange-looking block on it. It's at this point that he will also hand over a Master Ball, providing you've completed the main game and have become Champion.

Re-reading the first Legendary Clue (this can be done at any time, from the Key Items section of your bag), listening to Peony, and having seen the frequent camera cuts during the last conversation, your first step should be to investigate the item sitting on the table. Peony claims it's his new pillow, but he'll let you have it, seeing as you think it's connected to a legendary Pokemon.

Freezington

With the Wooden Crown now in your inventory, head outside into Freezington, go to the wooden statue, and place the Wooden Crown back in its rightful place. You'll hear a cry from somewhere, and the King of Bountiful Harvests himself will emerge from the statue's shadow, and beckon you to follow it.

Talk to the Pokémon and it'll challenge you to a test of strength in the form of a battle. You're unable to throw a ball at it, and if you run you'll only have to battle again, so don't worry about defeating it, as the plot won't advance unless you do.

After you knock it out, it will try to converse with you, only to find you cannot understand it. Peony appears at this moment to check out what's been causing all the noise, and before he can fully work out what's going on the King of Bountiful Harvests uses its psychic power to possess him, so that it can speak to you.

The Pokémon reveals itself as Calyrex, the King of Bountiful Harvests from legend. It thanks you for restoring his statue, and tells you how they used to be revered in this land, but over time people have forgotten his existence. Without anybody to believe in him and his power, his strength has waned, but putting the statue back together and proving your strength to him has at least granted enough power for him to speak to you through Peony. He requests that you talk to the townsfolk of Freezington to find out what they know and remember about him, as your next part of this quest.

There are four people you need to talk to for tidbits of information. The first is standing next to a field of crops by the exit to Frostpoint Field, who'll moan about the growth of the village's crops. Numbers two and three are engaged in a conversation by the crops in the middle, accompanied by a Swablu - talking to one will trigger the dialogue for both, so you don't need to talk to them separately. The final person is the Mayor, who is standing in front of his house, where you last spoke to him, although at this point even he doesn't believe in Calyrex's existence. Once you've talked to everyone, a prompt will inform you to report back to Calyrex.

Speak to Calyrex, and tell him the bad news - that the villagers no longer believe in his existence, as he suspected. The solution might be to reunite Calyrex with his steed, as seen in the statue in the village. He tasks you with another fact-finding mission, asking the villagers what they might know in case it triggers his memory, before he relinquishes control of Peony and disappears. When Peony comes to, he understandably feels unusual, so heads back inside, leaving you to talk to the townsfolk on your own.

There's only three people for you to talk to in town this time round - the man by the crops and the two women with the Swablu (you also have to talk to them individually this time). When you approach the Mayor's house, however, the two women will tell you that he's not home, and that he's gone to look at the fields in the Giant's Bed, which can be by heading through Frostpoint Field and continuing to the left. The fastest way there is by the house with the crops planted outside - leave the village and follow their instructions, and you'll find the Mayor waiting for you.

The Mayor is examining the state of the crop patches, bemoaning that these too are now unsuitable. Ask him about the loyal steed, and he'll invite you back to his home in Freezington to talk about it in more detail, before leaving. Head back to the village to continue your conversation.

Meet the Mayor at his front door, and he'll bring up how the statue now has a massive head, and seem surprised at the fact it's supposed to. He'll then invite you inside, and tell you that the steed used to be fond of a specific sort of vegetable, although he can't recall exactly what, and he directs you to the bookshelf for further research. Read the fourth book, Hardy Crops for the Tundra (you can also read the others if you wish), and go back outside, and you'll see Calyrex has re-emerged in his previous position, waiting for you to return with information.

Talk to Calyrex and Peony will return, meaning the Pokémon can talk through him again. Tell Calyrex that their steed loves carrots, and things begin to click into place - if we can successfully grow the carrots, then that might coax them out of hiding. First, though, we'll need to find some carrot seeds. The person you need to talk to is the gentleman standing by the crops in the center of Freezington, who can trade you the seeds for 8 pieces of Dynite Ore. If you don't have the quantity required, don't worry - you can obtain more from random item drops around the Crown Tundra, as a reward for winning Max Raid Battles, or by returning to the Max Lair to complete more Dynamax Adventures.

Once you have the 8 Dynite Ore required, exchange them for the Carrot Seeds and go back to talk to Calyrex. He'll visualize two potential places to plant them, and mark them on your map, as he goes back into hiding. You can choose where to go from here, but you can only pick one location. Going to the Snowslide Slope will choose the Ice-type Glastrier, and Calyrex Ice Rider, a bulky but slow physical attacker. If you pick the Old Cemetery you'll attract the Ghost-type Spectrier, and Calyrex Shadow Rider, a fast special attacker. As you leave a cutscene will play, where a woman sings a song to her grandchild about the choice that awaits you. Once you've decided, leave town and head downhill towards the Old Cemetery, or bear left through the Giant's Bed and go up the hill to the Snowslide Slope.

Snowslide Slope

If you wish to find Glastrier, head to the left once you enter the Giant's Bed, past the lake and turn left once you reach the Watt Trader at the bottom of the Snowslide Slope. Go up the hill and you'll find a small pool of water on your right - the crop fields are just behind this. When you approach, you'll be asked if you wish to plant the seeds here. Calyrex will come and join you, and confirm that if you plant the seeds here, you'll grow Iceroot Carrots that attract the Ice-type Glastrier. Calyrex will double check that you're sure you wish to plant the seeds here - if you say yes, then you cannot change your mind afterwards.

Plant the seeds, and Calyrex will use its powers, via the medium of song and dance, to cause a single Iceroot Carrot to grow. It bemoans the fact that they can only grow a singular carrot from all the seeds you planted, but asks you to take it nonetheless. Before Calyrex can tell you fully about the Reins of Unity, Glastrier, drawn to the smell of the Iceroot Carrot, gallops to Freezington in search of them, putting the townsfolk at risk. Head back to Freezington, either on foot or by Flying Taxi, to try and stop it before it's too late.

Old Cemetery

If you wish to find Spectrier, go to the Old Cemetery and find the crop field similar to the ones seen in Freezington. When you get close enough, you will be asked if you wish to plant the seeds here. If you accept, Calyrex will emerge and remind you that planting here will grow Shaderoot Carrots that attract the Ghost-type Glastrier, and ask a second time if you are sure that you want to plant them here. This is the point of no return - if you confirm here, you cannot change your mind later.

Plant the seeds and Calyrex will perform an odd song and dance routine, which causes a single Shaderoot Carrot to grow. Calyrex mentions that they'll need the Reins of Unity to reach their true form, but before it can elaborate, Spectrier gallops past you to Freezington in search of the Shaderoot Carrot, where it could put the citizens in danger. Make your way back to the village to stop it before it's too late.

Freezington

Glastrier/Spectrier is already in the centre of the village by the time you arrive. When you approach, it will turn its attention towards you and attack! As with the Calyrex encounter earlier, you can't catch the Pokémon at this point or flee from battle, so knock it out to continue.

With the horse defeated, it'll turn its attention away from you, but charge towards the villagers instead! Thankfully Calyrex intervenes, calling to its loyal steed, who then gallops away from the village. The horse did however leave something behind - a tuft of White Mane Hair or Black Mane Hair (for Glastrier or Spectier respectively).

After you collect the tuft of hair, the Mayor comes over to thank you, and sees the Mane Hair you have just picked up. He'll tell you his ancestors used to weave the hair along with a special blossom into the Reins of Unity, although the technique has been lost over time. Calyrex reveals itself again, and beckons for you to come to your usual meeting place to talk.

Talk to Calyrex and they will thank you for helping to deal with their steed. In return, you tell them about the Reins of Unity, and how a special blossom was needed to forge them. While the King of Bountiful Harvests is still only at a fraction of their full strength, they have regained enough power to create a Radiant Petal. You are tasked with finding the descendant of those who weaved the reins in the past to help make them again - thankfully, the Mayor already told us that he fits the description, so go to his house to ask for his help.

Inside the Mayor's house, talk to him and hand over the tuft of Mane Hair and the Radiant Petal. He seems sceptical that he'll be able to do a proper job, and while he tries his best it's probably not quite good enough. It's at this point Peony barges in, complaining about a lack of hot water. Ever eager to please, and blissfully ignorant of the magnitude of what you're trying to do, he dives right in to try it himself and produces a perfect set of Reins of Unity.

Leave the Mayor's house and Calyrex will once again possess Peony. They'll tell you that the loyal steed is awaiting at the Crown Shrine, at the very top of the mountain, and that you should meet Calyrex there, marking the location on the map for you. In order to get there, you'll have to go through Frostpoint Field, head east through the Giant's Bed, make your way up the Snowslide Slope, navigate through the Tunnel to the Top, and traverse the Path to the Peak until you reach the Crown Shrine itself.

Frostpoint Field

Exit Freezington to Frostpoint Field by the singular crop field near the Mayor's House, rather than by your base, and head down the slope into the Giant's Bed.

Crown Shrine

The Crown Shine is an old stone building, reminiscent of a castle or a church, with a giant, leafless tree at the back. When you approach a small cinematic will play, giving you a better look at the landscape. Pick up the items outside, including TR11, which teaches the powerful Psychic, and a rare Bottle Cap, and head inside.

Inside the Shrine, Calyrex is waiting for you, alongside Peony. Talk to it and hand over the Reins of Unity, and Calyrex will tell you of its plan to lure either Glastrier or Spectrier, depending on which option you picked. Place the Iceroot/Shaderoot Carrot into the basket at the front of the stable, and the three of you find a hiding place while you wait for the horse to arrive. Lured by the carrot, as it takes the bait Calyrex leaps out and jumps on its back, using the Reins of Unity to fuse with its loyal steed.

With Calyrex now fused, it lets Peony out of its control, and he comes to his senses only to be astounded by the creature in front of him. Calyrex tries to talk to you, but as it cannot get its message across, it uses its psychic powers to possess Peony for one final time. It thanks you for believing in the legend, and restoring them to their former glory, before one last request - if you can prove your strength in battle, then it will join your team. Calyrex then returns Peony to the Freeze Inn, leaving just you and the legendary Pokémon at the Crown Shrine, setting the stage for your encounter.

This is your opportunity to finally catch the King of Bountiful Harvests, in either its Ice Rider or Shadow Rider form. When you complete the catch, both Calyrex and either Glastrier/Spectrier will be added to your Pokédex, and will be able to be unfused later. You can use the Master Ball Peony gave to you at the start of your adventure, or use a different ball if you wish - whichever ball you use will be the same for both Pokémon. None of these Pokémon can be shiny, if you're thinking about hunting for one. Don't worry if you knock it out accidentally either, or if you have to run to avoid wiping - if you do, Calyrex will shoot you a puzzled look, giving you the chance to repeat the encounter.

After you catch Calyrex, it will speak to you from its Poké Ball, looking forward to your adventures together. Peony calls you from back at base, telling you of a strange dream he had, although we know it was actually real. Peony asks you to report back to the Freeze Inn, and when you're ready you can do exactly that.

Upon being caught, Glastrier or Spectrier will have the same Poké Ball as Calyrex. All Pokémon here are coded never to appear as Shiny.

Freezington

Once you're back in the village, head into the Freeze Inn and tell Peony about your progress with the King of Bountiful Harvests. Peony can't seem to believe it actually exists, and is also in awe of its very large head, before he marks Legendary Clue 1 as completed, bringing an end to this part of your adventure in the Crown Tundra.
