Walkthrough:The Crown Tundra/Part 1

Crown Tundra

If you have the Crown Pass, obtained by purchasing the Expansion Pass for your game version (make sure you’re purchasing the correct one, as they are not cross compatible), talk to the attendant by the ticket barriers at Wedgehurst Station, and ask to go to Crown Tundra Station. The train will whisk you to the Crown Tundra, the location for this section of the DLC.

Upon your arrival, a scientist will update your Pokédex for the Crown Tundra. Head outside into the snow-swept landscape, although before you can advance any further, you’ll find a father and daughter in a feisty argument. Talk to them and the man will introduce himself as Peony, and challenge you to a battle.

Peony has two strong, bulky Steel-type Pokémon in Copperajah and Aggron. Utilize your type matchups, focus on using special attackers, and with a potential six Pokémon to two advantage this should be no trouble. Having said that, if you do go in unprepared it doesn’t actually matter - the story still advances even if you lose, so this fight is purely for plot exposition.

That does mean that if you were previously scared off by his level 70 Pokémon, you needn’t have worried, and this section of the game is in fact available from very early on. If you did head straight here, you wouldn’t have the necessary badges required to catch any of the high level wild Pokémon, however.

It seems Peony’s daughter has used the distraction of the battle to escape her overbearing dad. Peony mentions his daughter wanting to go to the Max Lair - head eastwards across the Slippery Slope and you’ll see him eyeing it up from the outside. Follow him in, when you’ve done enough exploring outside.

Max Lair

Inside the Max Lair you’ll find Peony pleading with a scientist to let him head in to find his daughter. Although his petitions fall on deaf ears, the scientist says she can let both of you inside, provided you listen to her explanation of how Dynamax Adventures work.

You set out as a team of four, each with a rental Pokémon, which is chosen from three options generated from the pool of possible Pokémon. Once inside, you’ll be given a choice of paths to head down, with a Dynamax Pokémon at each option. Once you defeat it, you’ll have the chance to catch it and advance further. After each battle, you’ll be given the option to exchange your current Pokémon for the one you have just defeated. If you can get through three stages, you’ll battle a Legendary Pokémon at the end. The catch is that across your party, Pokémon can only be knocked out a total of three times. Once a fourth Pokémon faints, you’ll be forced out of the den, regardless of how far you’ve come, and will have to start over again. Once your adventure ends, you’ll return your Pokémon and get the chance to keep one of the Pokémon you caught during your adventure.

Notably, catches in Dynamax Adventures are guaranteed, regardless of which ball you use, and they also ignore the level cap set by number of badges, meaning it is possible to head to the Crown Tundra as soon as you hit the Wild Area for the first time, lose to Peony, go into the Max Lair to obtain a high level, possibly legendary, Pokémon, and then steamroll your way through the main game, in what feels like a massive oversight.

After listening to the explanation, which Peony has clearly not understood, he charges off in search of his daughter. The scientist mentions that, for some reason, he reminds her of Chairman Rose, and that you can head on in for your first Dynamax Adventure when you’re ready.

If your first Dynamax Adventure is offline, the legendary Pokémon at the end will always be Suicune, so keep that in mind when choosing a rental Pokémon and potential paths to head down. One of the Pokémon’s types at each path is always revealed to you, along with a silhouette shrouded in fog. Along the way, you may find berries, which restore your team’s health, a backpacker, who allows you to choose from a selection of held items, or a scientist, who can swap your Pokémon with a random rental Pokémon at full health.

Choose your path carefully, make note of type matchups, try and avoid any Pokémon being knocked out as much as possible, switching if you have to, and see if you can make it all the way to take down the Suicune and potentially take it back with you.

Once your adventure is finished, you find Peonia, Peony’s daughter, in the Max Lair. She apologizes for using you as a decoy, and also reveals her father used to be a Gym Leader. She explains her father wanted to go on an adventure hunting legendary Pokémon with her, but that she’d rather stay here and have more Dynamax Adventures. She then has the bright idea of having you fill in for her, and before you can disagree she disappears, leaving you no choice in the matter.

Peony is back at the entrance, flat on his back, after injuring himself inside. You explain the situation to him and, after he hands you his League Card, asks you to meet him in Freezington to begin your ‘adven-tour’ together. Exit the lair and you’ll see him run off down the hill into the small village of Freezington, so follow him to continue.

Freezington

Upon arrival in Freezington you’ll be greeted by the Mayor, who asks if you’re also here to hear about the legend of the King of Bountiful Harvests. He sighs and says that it’s all a myth anyway, and hands you a Sweatshirt with the King’s likeness on it as a memento. The Mayor then points out a statue to you, which supposedly shows a better impression of him. Peony beckons you into a house with his flag outside, which will act as your base of operations. Have a look at the statue, which feels as though it’s missing something, scout out the rest of the town if you wish, then head on in.

Items

There is a merchant in front of the crops at the center of the village, although he has a very limited selection of items. Notably, he is the only merchant who sells Great Balls and Ultra Balls regardless of how many badges the player has obtained.

Hidden items

There are also a number of hidden items dotted around town - these regenerate daily, and have a 1% chance of being a Wishing Piece.
