History

Background

Old Roto's human counterpart

Old Roto was originally a human butler that served the Lang family. While he and Violet were very close, the butler worried the boy's pampered lifestyle would make him ill-prepared for integrating into regular society. He attempted to slowly convince Violet that he wasn't actually royalty like he was raised to believe, but the butler passed away before he could accomplish this. Wanting to console their grieving son, Violet's parents commissioned a Rotom Phone with an AI copy of the butler's personality installed onto it. Violet later attached a mustache to the phone to make it better resemble its human counterpart.

"Cassiopeia" speaking through Old Roto

Old Roto debuted in Speeding! Paldea's Prince of Speed!!. After enrolling into Uva Academy, Violet and Old Roto began searching through the student registry for a student named Arven. When Jacq entered the teacher's lounge, he mistook the two for intruders and attempted to stop them. Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, Old Roto had Jacq install a Pokédex app onto it. Later, at the school courtyard, Old Roto and Violet successfully found Arven and dragged him along to help search for the Herba Mystica.

In Discover! The Quaking Earth Titan!!, Old Roto traveled with Violet and Arven to Asado Desert, home of one of Titan Pokémon. While traveling, Old Roto informed Arven about Violet's past. Sympathizing with Violet due to issues with his own father, Arven agreed to help Old Roto with easing Violet into regular society.

In Raid! The Dark Crew Base!!, Old Roto was hacked by someone going by the name "Cassiopeia". The caller recruited Violet and Arven as members of Operation Starfall, a plan to defeat the five squad bosses of Team Star, forcing the group to disband.

In PASV16, Old Roto was the first to notice Sunny Day had been set up by a group of Charcadet during Violet's battle against Mela in order to weaken him. This helped stop the battle until the foul play was ended.

In PASV24, when rechallenging The Quaking Earth Titans, Old Roto helped deduce the type of Great Tusk, giving Violet and Arven an idea on which Pokémon they needed to defeat it.

Later, while testing Miraidon's newly-obtained gliding ability at Casseroya Lake, Violet accidentally came across a mysterious glowing stake embedded into the ground. Ignoring Arven's warnings to leave it alone, Violet pulled out the stake, which immediately crumbled into dust. That night, everyone camped the night on Socarrat Trail]. Old Roto revealed that it heard a bell-like sound produced from the stake when it was removed and noted it heard similar sounds throughout their journey, including at the Icerend Shrine. Hearing that more stakes could possibly be found throughout Paldea piqued Violet's curiosity, only for Arven to remind him they had to focus on the Titan Pokémon.

When challenging Tatsugiri, the False Dragon Titan, and the Dondozo it was commanding, Old Roto gave Violet information about the two species. With that information, Violet devised a plan using berries to distract Dondozo enough that it ignored Tatsugiri. While distracted, Dondozo was defeated by Violet and Arven's Pokémon.

Personality and characteristics

Old Roto displaying Pokémon information

Old Roto has been installed with an AI personality of the butler that looked after Violet as a child. It is polite, patient, and professional at all times. Old Roto cares greatly for Violet and is one of the few capable of getting him to listen and stay on topic. It is also skilled at explaining Violet's more outlandish tendencies to people he accidentally offended.

It holds an interest in helping Violet explore the world and learn how to better fit into regular society. Although it wishes for Violet to understand he is not an actual prince, it still refers to him as "your highness" and "prince" out of respect.

After Rotom inhabited the Pokédex, it often gives others helpful advice about the Pokémon around them. As a Pokédex, Old Roto has the ability to scan Pokémon and give information on them, though the information might take time to update due to the app being incomplete.
