Mini Dex

The Mini Dex (Japanese: ミニずかん Mini Illustrated Encyclopedia), also referred to as the Pokémon Mini Dex,[1] is a Pokédex-based feature in Pokémon Puzzle Collection and Pokémon Puzzle Collection Vol. 2.

Game mechanics

Explanation about the Mini Dex in the manual of the first game

In both games, the Mini Dex is found in the main menu. The Mini Dex displays 80 Pokémon in the first game, or 96 Pokémon in the second game. The Pokémon are ordered by their Mini Dex number. This is effectively a condensed version of the National Pokédex, following the same numerical order except several Pokémon are absent from the Mini Dex. Since both games were released during the Generation II, the Mini Dex features Pokémon from Generations I and II.

Due to the small screen size, the Mini Dex list only shows two Pokémon at a time. The player can navigate the Pokémon list by pressing up or down. In the second game only, the player can press left or right to go back or forward 10 Pokémon at once, up to the start or end of the list.

A full Mini Dex entry contains the Pokémon image, species name, Mini Dex number, and National Pokédex number. Before a Pokémon is revealed, its image appears as "?" and its species appears as "----------", with no National Pokédex number. The player unlocks each Mini Dex entry by solving puzzles. If the player selects an unlocked Mini Dex entry and presses A, they will see the Pokémon sprite or animation as it would appear in the puzzle. In the second game only, it is also possible to play the puzzle by selecting an unlocked Pokémon in the Mini Dex. The options in the second game are: みる (see) and パズルであそぶ (play puzzle).
