Ilex Forest (Japanese: ウバメのもり Ubame Forest) is a dense forest located in southern Johto, directly west of Azalea Town. The forest's trees are so close together that all light is blocked out, and the forest seems to be in a perpetual night.

The only important features in the forest is a shrine to Celebi and an encounter with the Spiky-eared Pichu.

In Pokémon Crystal, if a player managed to obtain the GS Ball, either through the Pokémon Mobile System or use of a GameShark, and if Kurt had examined it already, placing the GS Ball in the shrine would bring a level 30 Celebi to face the player. Sadly, the GS Ball event never occured outside of Japan without the use of hacking.

Ilex Forest Shrine

The shrine is a small structure located in the Ilex Forest. It is used in obtaining Celebi.

When the player puts the GS Ball on the shrine in Pokémon Crystal, a level 30 Celebi will appear. The player then has the opportunity to capture the Grass/Psychic Pokémon.

Obtaining Cut

When the player enters the forest, the only way to proceed is to return a runaway Farfetch'd for the regional cutting master's son. In Generation II, this is done by using the forest's layout to chase it back, but in Generation IV, there are two Farfetch'd and each needs to be approached while they are facing the other way. The player can do this by walking over sticks and, by doing so, causing them to ruffle. This grabs the Farfecth'd's attention and, if no other sticks are ruffled, may allow them to be approached from behind. Once the Farfetch'd are returned, HM01 (Cut) will be obtained.

In the anime

Ilex Forest appeared in a number of episodes in the anime, as Ash and his friends traveled from Azalea Town to Goldenrod City. The first episode it was seen in was A Farfetch'd Tale, where Ash encounters the shrine dedicated to the forest's protector. He would later revisit the shrine—or perhaps one of many different shrines—in Pokémon 4Ever. Ash's Noctowl was caught within the forest in Fowl Play, one of the final episodes set here.

The forest is much larger in the anime than the games, which is why it was the setting for so many episodes. People are shown to be living in it, and there are small villages scattered throughout, and even a Pokémon Center.

Trivia

• Ilex Forest is the only early region forest that is not named after the nearest town, unlike Viridian Forest, Petalburg Woods, and Eterna Forest.
• In the Generation II games, the in-game maps made it appear that a route existed between Azalea Town and Ilex Forest, despite players entering the forest immediately after leaving the town. This was corrected for the in-game maps in Generation IV.
