National Park (optional)
The National Park connecting 35 and 36 is a haven for Bug- and Grass Pokémon. The Bug-Catching Contest is held here every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Welcome to Goldenrod, a sprawling metropolis and Johto's economic capital. Sister city to Saffron in Kanto, Goldenrod boasts a wide variety of local attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store.  With so much going on, it's easy to get distracted and overlook any shady events.  But with a Team Rocket grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to return here to save the city from the Rockets' underhanded schemes.

Bug-Catching Contest
The Bug-Catching Contest is free to enter, and the objective is to catch the single best Bug Pokémon possible. Trainers are given 20 Sport Balls and allowed to use a single Pokémon from their party. The others are held temporarily until the competition is over. Any Pokémon caught during the contest will be recorded by the Pokédex, though only one can be kept for judging. The competition ends when all 20 Sport Balls are used, the Trainer blacks out, leaves the park, or 20 minutes have passed. The Pokémon that was judged may be kept after the competition. A Pokémon's Bug-Catching Contest is determined by its level, IVs, remaining HP, and how likely it was to appear.

The Bike Shop has relocated to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but business doesn't seem to be doing very well.  The owner has an idea: since you're traveling so much, he'll loan you a List of key items in Generation IV, the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up.  Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot (even with the List of key items in Generation IV), and he gains new customers - everybody's happy!  The only downside is that your partner Pokémon can't keep up with you on the bike, and will automatically return to its Poké Ball when you climb onto it.

At Goldenrod Game Corner, you can win coins by playing the new Voltorb Flip game.  Speak to Mr Game behind the table to receive the List of key items in Generation IV.  The Voltorb Flip game is exclusive to non-Japanese versions of HeartGold and SoulSilver, replacing the slot machines present in the original versions.  The game features a five-by-five grid of tiles, underneath of which are hidden numbers (which multiply the player's score when flipped) and Voltorb (which Selfdestruct and cause the player to lose all points). You can easily figure out where the Voltorb are located by using the clues provided: the number of Voltorb in each row and column are noted at the side of the screen.  If you can find all of the 2x and 3x multipliers, the game will advance to harder levels. Winning at this game, as all others, will earn the player Coins, which can be traded for prizes.
Route 36
36 is a unique stretch of land, as the only route in the game to link five different locations together. On the side that connects to Violet City, you can speak to the man to receive 06 if you have not done so already. On Thursdays, Arthur of the Week Siblings can be found here; speaking to him will result in a Hard Stone on the first meeting.

Bill's house
The Odd Tree
East of the park, that odd tree is still blocking the narrow trail from every direction. Floria, from Goldenrod's Flower Shop, suggests watering it with the SquirtBottle, which causes it to attack! It turns out to be a Sudowoodo, a Pokémon more akin to a rock than a Grass. SAVE your game before trying to catch it.
Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the city's western coast with his mother and sister.  He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but his sister will give you his phone number.  This is a useful way to check how many Pokémon that you have stored in the current box.  After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod.  Stop by his house afterwards and he will give you a Eevee.

Goldenrod Underground
Once the path is clear, Floria gives you the Berry Pots, a set of four handy containers that allow Berry growth while traveling. She also gives out three Oran Berries and three Pecha Berries before returning to the Flower Shop.

The Goldenrod Tunnel is a tunnel stretching north-south under the western part of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store.  During the week, the kiosks rotate between a salon, herbalist, and discount item shop.
Route 37
* The northern shop is only open on Monday mornings, 4am - 10am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit.
37 is home to a secluded grove of Apricorn trees, which produces Red, Blu, and Blk varieties. On Sundays, Sunny of the Week Siblings can be found south of the grove. Speaking to her will result in a Magnet on the first meeting.

* The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers.  Their services will raise a Pokémon's friendship, though at different rates.  The younger brotherSundayWednesdayFriday charges PDollar300, and the older brotherTuesdayThursdaySaturday charges PDollar500.  Neither brother works on a Monday.
{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #; roundy; border: 5px solid #;"

* The Herb Shop, the southernmost shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are cheaper than their Poké Mart counterparts.  The downside to this is that Pokémon do not enjoy these bitter herbs, so their friendship rating will decrease slightly as a result.  This shop is only open on weekends.

Ecruteak City
The north end of the tunnel houses two new venues, the Dress-Up Shop and the Memorial Photo Studio. The Dress-Up Shop lets Trainers dress up their Pokémon with accessories before taking their photo; the Photo Studio lets a Trainer dress up in a Team Rocket uniform before taking a picture of them and their Pokémon.
Welcome to Ecruteak, a historical city where the past meets the present. The city is shrouded in mystery, as all but Celebi of the region's legendary Pokémon have ties to the area. Unique landmarks include the Ecruteak Gym, Kimono Dance Theater, and the twin towers; the Burned Tower in the west, and the Bell Tower in the east.

Name Rater
The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym.  Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, the Name Rater evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and gives Trainers the opportunity to think up new nicknames for them unless they were received in a trade, as they cannot be renamed.

Mood Tester
There are Friendship, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only evolve when a Pokémon reaches a certain level of friendship. The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of a Trainer's first Pokémon. There are many things that a Trainer can do in order to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like grooming it, using vitamins on it, or simply walking with the Pokémon.

Global Terminal
The Global Terminal is the worldwide network over which players can interact in different ways via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.  In order to access the terminal, players must have the the first badge of Johto.  The Global Trade Station lets a player send and receive Pokémon on the worldwide network.  If the player talks with the woman at the counter, she will direct them into a room in which they can either put up a Pokémon to be traded or trade a Pokémon they own for one that has been put up for trade.

Radio Tower
Step inside the Radio Tower by the train station.  Felicity, the woman at the computer, allows Trainers to draw a lottery ticket, and hands out prizes if any numbers match the Trainer's ID number.  Speak to the third woman behind the counter to participate in a quiz to earn the Pokégear for your Pokégear.  After completing the quiz, the pink-haired girl nearby will return to her post at the Gym.  Talk to DJ Buena on the second floor to get the List of key items in Generation IV, which lets you play the Buena's Password game everyday to earn points to trade for items.

There are numerous shows broadcasted, with the most prominent being Oak's Pokémon Talk, Pokémon Music Channel, and Buena's Password.  Goldenrod Radio Tower.

* <i> Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk </i>
{| class="expandable" style="margin: auto; background: #BFA26B; roundy; border: 5px solid #CDB891;"
:Professor Oak, with commentary by DJ Mary, gives tips on where Trainers can find different Pokémon species.
* <i> Pokémon Music Channel </i>
:Hosted by DJ, this channel broadcasts two different pieces of music (depending on the day of the week) that affect how often wild Pokémon will appear.
::The Pokémon March plays upbeat music that increases the chance of encountering wild Pokémon.
::The Pokémon Lullaby plays soothing music that decreases the chance of encountering wild Pokémon.

Magnet Train Station
Next to the Radio Tower is the Magnet Train Station.  Currently shut down, this bullet train normally runs between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  This is the quickest way to travel from one region to the other, since the only other method (sailing aboard the S.S. Aqua between Olivine and Vermilion) runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.

Goldenrod Dept Store
Located just east of the Poké Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto (eight floors counting the rooftop and basement), and has a wide array of items on sale.

Basement
While there are no shops in the basement, you can take the elevator downstairs to find an Ultra Ball, a Burn Heal, and an Ether lying around.

2F - Trainer's Market
The <b>Trainer's Market</b> sells basic equipment and items that a Trainer may need during their journey.

Meet Bill
Stop by the Pokémon Center to meet Bill, the inventor of the PC Storage System. He talks about improving the Pokémon trading and storage systems with his friends, especially Lanette of the Hoenn region. From this point on, Wi-Fi capabilities are now enabled for all Pokémon Centers. He then leaves for his home in Goldenrod, where you can visit him to receive an Eevee. Eevee is a rare Pokémon that can evolve into one of seven variations.

3F - Battle Collection
Treasure Hunting
Visit the house next to the Gym, and speak to the man inside. He gives you the Dowsing MCHN, a handy tool that reacts to hidden items lying nearby.
The <b>Battle Collection</b> sells temporary stat-enhancing items.

4F - Medicine Box
Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is a sacred place, and is off-limits to all but a few people. Ecruteak's Fog Badge grants access to the building, but no higher than the first floor. A pair of special items, the Rainbow Wing and Clear Bell, are required to reach the rest of the tower.

The <b>Medicine Box</b> sells permanent stat-enhancing items.
Burned Tower
The charred, crumbling ruins of the Burned Tower can be found in the city's northwest district. Formerly known as the Brass Tower, it was once as majestic as the Bell Tower to the east. Built 700 years ago, it was said to be the roost of Lugia. But 150 years ago, the tower was struck by a lightning bolt that ignited a fire that raged for three days. The silver Pokémon and Ho-Oh that roosted on the Bell Tower escaped to the skies unharmed, and a sudden downpour quenched the fire. The silver Pokémon flew off, while the rainbow Pokémon resurrected three nameless Pokémon that perished in the blaze before flying off as well.

The <b>TM Corner</b> on the fifth floor offers a variety of different TMs for a Trainer to purchase. <br>
On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper behind the counter, and she will give you 27 if your partner Pokémon is happy, or 21 if it is unhappy.  There is also a man here who is willing to trade his Machop for a Drowzee.  It is a good idea to trade, since the Goldenrod Gym is devoted to Normal.

1F
There are two people near the entrance who are investigating the ruins. One is Morty, the Ecruteak Gym Leader, and the other is Eusine, Morty's friend and researcher focusing on the legendary beasts. Both are well-versed in the local legends, and Eusine has even dedicated his life to tracking and meeting Suicune. He may be close to his goal, as three regal-looking Pokémon can be seen through the charred hole in the floor, standing motionless on the lower level. Once the two have explained the legend of the tower, head north to meet Silver.

With so many supplies at their disposal, Trainers should have little trouble at the Goldenrod Gym.

The Goldenrod Gym is devoted to Normal.  Trainers would do well to bring Fightings along, since they are the only type to get a power bonus when battling Normal-types.  Unless you've traded for the guy's Machop in the Dept Store, this could be a rough battle. The Gym's layout is much the same as it was in Gold and Silver, but challengers must now navigate over and around the raised platforms in order to reach Whitney.

The legendary beasts awaken with a roar when you approach them. Raikou and Entei leap quickly around the room before running off, and Suicune, pausing for a moment to examine you, follows the others a moment later. Eusine hurries down the ladder and marvels at seeing Suicune, as he has been pursuing it for nearly ten years. As the beasts are now roaming Pokémon, it is possible to track Raikou and Entei with the Pokégear's Map function.

After defeating her, Whitney sobs uncontrollably, ignoring you altogether.  Unable to receive your new badge, the frustrated Trainer turns to leave when one of the junior Trainers stops you.  She speaks to Whitney, and the Gym Leader finally gives up the Plain (which gives a Speed boost to a Trainer's Pokémon), 45, and the ability to use Strength outside of battle. Whitney will also mentions that the Pokéathlon Dome is now open, so now you can compete in the games there.

After beating Whitney, stop by the flower shop just east of the Gym.  The woman inside talks about an odd tree on 36 that actually squirms around to <i>avoid</i> contact with water.  An oddity, but Trainers strong enough to defeat the Goldenrod Gym should have no trouble approaching it.  She gives you the List of key items in Generation IV to instigate it, hoping to discover what it really is.  Return here after obtaining the List of key items in Generation IV, and the woman who gave you the SquirtBottle will be offering Mulch for sale.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

National Park (optional)

The National Park connecting Route 35 and Route 36 is a haven for Bug- and Grass-type Pokémon. The Bug-Catching Contest is held here every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

A Pokémon's value is determined by its level, IVs, remaining HP, and how likely it was to appear.

Route 36

Route 36

Route 36 is a unique stretch of land, as the only route in the game to link five different locations together. On the side that connects to Violet City, you can speak to the man to receive HM06 (Rock Smash) if you have not done so already. On Thursdays, Arthur of the Week Siblings can be found here; speaking to him will result in a Hard Stone on the first meeting.

The Odd Tree

East of the park, that odd tree is still blocking the narrow trail from every direction. Floria, from Goldenrod's Flower Shop, suggests watering it with the SquirtBottle, which causes it to attack! It turns out to be a Sudowoodo, a Pokémon more akin to a rock than a tree. SAVE your game before trying to catch it.

Once the path is clear, Floria gives you the Berry Pots, a set of four handy containers that allow Berry growth while traveling. She also gives out three Oran Berries and three Pecha Berries before returning to the Flower Shop.

Route 37

Route 37

Route 37 is home to a secluded grove of Apricorn trees, which produces Red, Blu, and Blk varieties. On Sundays, Sunny of the Week Siblings can be found south of the grove. Speaking to her will result in a Magnet on the first meeting.

Ecruteak City

Ecruteak City

Welcome to Ecruteak, a historical city where the past meets the present. The city is shrouded in mystery, as all but one of the region's legendary Pokémon have ties to the area. Unique landmarks include the Ecruteak Gym, Kimono Dance Theater, and the twin towers; the Burned Tower in the west, and the Bell Tower in the east.

Treasure Hunting

Visit the house next to the Gym, and speak to the man inside. He gives you the Dowsing MCHN, a handy tool that reacts to hidden items lying nearby.

Kimono Dance Theater

As you enter the building, one of the Kimono Girls is onstage, yelling at the Rocket Grunt for harassing her. Beat the troublemaker and he runs off, and an old man from the audience rewards you with HM03 (Surf) as you exit the stage.

Bell Tower

The Bell Tower is a sacred place, and is off-limits to all but a few people. Ecruteak's Fog Badge grants access to the building, but no higher than the first floor. A pair of special items, the Rainbow Wing and Clear Bell, are required to reach the rest of the tower.

Burned Tower

Burned Tower, 1F
Burned Tower, B1F

The charred, crumbling ruins of the Burned Tower can be found in the city's northwest district. Formerly known as the Brass Tower, it was once as majestic as the Bell Tower to the east. Built 700 years ago, it was said to be the roost of a silver-colored Pokémon. But 150 years ago, the tower was struck by a lightning bolt that ignited a fire that raged for three days. The silver Pokémon and the rainbow-hued Pokémon that roosted on the Bell Tower escaped to the skies unharmed, and a sudden downpour quenched the fire. The silver Pokémon flew off, while the rainbow Pokémon resurrected three nameless Pokémon that perished in the blaze before flying off as well.
