Phione (Japanese: フィオネ Phione) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon. It is possible that it is a legendary Pokémon; however, its legendary status has undergone and is still undergoing heavy debate and discussion.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. However, it can only be obtained by breeding Manaphy or another Phione with Ditto.

Biology

Physiology

Phione is the result of breeding Manaphy in the Sinnoh region. As a result, it is very similar to Manaphy in body structure. It has a tiny body with a red gem on it. Phione has a single rudimentary foot and club-like arms. Phione's head is larger than the rest of its body, and extending from its eyes are two small circles. It has a swim-bladder on its head with a single, ribbon-like antenna on it.

Gender differences

Phione is genderless.

Special abilities

Phione melting

Phione's abilities are similar to Manaphy's, but weaker. However, Phione is unable to use Tail Glow, Calm Mind, Shadow Ball, Psychic, Energy Ball, Heart Swap, Hyper Beam, or Giga Impact. Phione are supposedly able to create a dew that cures all ailments. Phione also has the ability to melt its body into water.

Behavior

Habitat

Phione lives in warm seas around the Sinnoh region.

Trivia

  • Phione is the only Pokémon that is obtainable only by breeding a legendary Pokémon.
  • Phione has the same base stats as Glalie.
  • Phione is taller and weighs more than its parent, Manaphy.
  • Phione can be bred not only from Manaphy, but also from a Phione.
  • There was much debate over whether or not Phione is a legendary Pokémon until recently, when Pokémon.com revealed that Phione is indeed legendary.[1] This makes it the legendary with the lowest base stats.
    • Oddly, the website initially answered that Phione was not a legendary Pokémon, but it was soon changed. This may indicate, however, that Pokémon.com's staff are unsure about Phione's legendary status, and thus makes their answer negligible, and Phione's legendary status still unknown.
  • While Phine is referred to as a Sea Drifter, its parent, Manaphy, is a Seafarer. This may indiate some type of subordinate status for Phione, since it suggests that while Manaphy controls where it travels, Phione merely "drifts."

Origin

Phione is possibly based on sea angels.

Name origin

Phione's name may be a corruption of Fiore, which is where Manaphy's egg is found, combined with "clione", the scientific name for sea angels, or "clone", because its sole purpose is to be a pseudo-Manaphy. It may be possible that Phione is a corruption of Pleione, a water nymph in Greek mythology. It's also likely that フィ comes from Template:P2. Additionally, its name may be a pun on the word "phony".
