In the anime

Tropius's first appearance was in the Pokémon movie Jirachi: Wish Maker. In it, Tropius was fleeing from the fake Groudon that was trying to snatch all the Pokémon.

The first major role that Tropius had was in AG127. A trainer named Dominic used the Fruit Pokémon and a Swalot against Ash's Corphish and Torkoal. Tropius and Torkoal knocked each other out when their Solarbeam and Overheat attacks connected and created an explosion.

A wild Tropius also challenges Ash's Grovyle in AG161.

Game Pokédex
Pokémon Ruby The bunches of fruit around Tropius's neck are very popular with children. This Pokémon loves fruit, and eats it continuously. Apparently, its love for fruit resulted in its own outgrowth of fruit.
Pokémon Sapphire Children of the southern tropics eat as snacks the fruit that grows in bunches around the neck of Tropius. This Pokémon flies by flapping the leaves on its back as if they were wings.
Pokémon Emerald It flies by flapping its broad leaves. The bunch of fruit that grows around its neck is deliciously sweet. In the spring, it scatters pollen from its neck.
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen It lives in tropical jungles. The bunch of fruit around its neck is delicious. The fruit grows twice a year.

Trivia

Tropius is one of the only two old Pokémon (apart from Starters and Legendaries) that must be obtained via Pal Park in Diamond & Pearl.

Origin

Tropius shares characteristics with the brachiosaurus, a sauropod from the late Jurassic period. There is also a legend that a creature known as Mokele mbembe, which is said to resemble a sauropod, lives on in the jungles of the Congo basin in Africa.

Name origin

Tropius's name is a corruption of tropic.
