Walkthrough:Pokémon Sword and Shield/Part 13

Route 9

Route 9

Start by heading south over the bridge, past the patch of grass and the first two trainers, and you'll find two Team Yell Grunts cheering on a Drednaw, as well as blocking your path, of course. They’re also holding up the scientist who gave you your Rotom Bike, who says he can upgrade it so that it can travel on water. You’ll only end up fighting one, because they’ll both clear off with the Drednaw when you win. Your reward is the ability to ride the Rotom Bike across water, which is handy as the second section of Route 9, known as Circhester Bay, is impossible to cross otherwise.

  • Glalie is located at the end of the stream west of the bridge by Circhester. It does not respawn.

Circhester Bay

Circhester Bay is mostly water, with an island in the center that has a Pokémon Camp, as well as various small beaches. To advance to the next part of the route, Outer Spikemuth, you can travel either clockwise or counter-clockwise around the center, eventually reaching land in the south. It’s definitely worth exploring all the nooks and crannies, with plenty of money items to be found, as well as two TMs, and other good utility items as well. There’s a fair few trainers to be fought, who use either Fighting- or Water-type Pokémon depending on their Trainer class. It's possible to get through this section without fighting any of them, however, should you so wish. There’s also plenty of Water-type Pokémon to catch, as well as some sneaky Grapploct lying in wait for unsuspecting trainers.

Items

All items here require an upgraded Rotom Bike to be accessed, aside from the upgrade itself.

Wanderers

  • There are several Grapploct in the water. They respawn when going too far into Route 9 proper or Outer Spikemuth (around past the signposts) or using the Flying Taxi. Their locations are:
    • Waiting directly east of the northern entrance to Circhester Bay
    • Moving in a circle around a group of icebergs northwest of the Pokémon Camp
    • Moving back and forth in a canal southwest of the Pokémon Camp
    • Moving in a circle around an iceberg between the Trainer Tips signpost and Circhester Bay signpost
    • Moving in a circle around a rock west of the Berry Tree

Outer Spikemuth

The third and final section of Route 9 is Outer Spikemuth. Head up the slope towards the town and you’ll find that the entrance has been closed off, preventing anyone from getting in. Marnie will helpfully signal to you, so follow her lead down the path to the south and round the corner where she’ll be waiting for you. She knows about another way into Spikemuth, her hometown, but as she’s a rival she won’t let you use it unless you can beat her in battle, with two Team Yell Grunts coming out for support. Her team of Dark types won’t be a problem for you if you know your type chart, although her Toxicroak has a good matchup into Fairy-type Pokémon that would otherwise flourish, so be wary.

Marnie pledges to get her revenge in the Champion Cup, but true to her word, she does step aside to let you into Spikemuth.

Spikemuth

When you enter Spikemuth, you'll find the Pokémon Center right in front of you. It's worth using it immediately, as you’ll be thrown right into the Gym Challenge. Head east after exiting the Center where Marnie is waiting for you. She'll hand you Piers's League Card and run off, and a Team Yell Grunt will make you change into your Uniform for the Gym Mission.

Gym Mission

The Mission itself just has you advance down Spikemuth's one long, narrow street, battling Team Yell Grunts, who double as Gym Trainers. A Kantonian Mr. Mime will block your path at certain points - just head back the way you came for a few steps and the next Trainers will ambush you, whose defeat will make Mr. Mime retreat and allow you to continue onward. There’s a Max Revive you can pick up along the way just in case you get into trouble. All the Trainers carry exclusively Dark-type Pokémon, so Fighting-, Fairy-, and Bug-type Pokémon should make light work of them. The only difficulty might be the Drapion the last Trainer uses, but a strong Ground-type move to attack its only weakness should see you through.

After you've defeated all the Trainers, you'll find Marnie, who explains that Team Yell shut Spikemuth's gates to prevent other Trainers from completing the Gym Challenge. Marnie tells you not to worry about that, though, and instead take on the Gym Leader, her brother Piers.

This battle is unique for a number of reasons. First, Spikemuth is the only town without a Power Spot, so neither you or Piers can Dynamax during your battle. Second, Piers is the only Gym Leader in any Pokémon game (as of Generation IX) to specialize in Dark-type Pokémon. He leads with a Scrafty that has Intimidate, weakening physical attackers. It also likes to use Fake Out on the first turn, causing you to flinch. You can get around this by using a Pokémon with Inner Focus, which both blocks Intimidate and prevents flinching, using a special attacker, or by using your first turn to set up an X Attack, boosting your attack to +1 on a turn you wouldn’t normally get a move off anyway. The Skuntank, which would normally be a problem for Fairy-type Pokémon that carry a good type matchup, doesn’t have any Poison-type damaging moves, so there’s nothing stopping you from utilizing them. With Dynamax unavailable, Piers can send his Pokémon out in any order, but none should pose too much of a problem if you’ve picked the right Pokémon to use.

After you've defeated him, Piers will hand over the Dark Badge, and the Dark Uniform. Piers then reveals to Marnie that he wants her to take over as the Gym Leader after the Champion Cup, although she flatly refuses, as she won’t have time when she's Champion. You’ll be returned to the start of the Gym Challenge, and a Team Yell Grunt will give you TM85 (Snarl), a Dark-type special move that drops your opponent’s Special Attack.

After beating the Gym

A stranger, who’s able to get into Spikemuth now that the main shutters have been opened, makes you head outside to Route 9 where there’s some sort of commotion going on. Leon’s outside checking things out, and he promises that he can take care of whatever’s making all the noise, and that you should just focus on finishing your Gym Challenge by facing Raihan, the final Gym Leader. Before you follow him into the Route 9 Tunnel, head back to the end of Spikemuth, where you can find a pair of Choice Specs just below the stage. With everything now tidied up in Spikemuth, you can return to the outside world to continue your adventure.

Pokémon

A male Team Yell Grunt named Edmund in the booth at the Gym arena will offer to trade the player his Kantonian Mr. Mime nicknamed "Mymo" in exchange for an Obstagoon.
