Ash's Dragonite (Japanese: サトシのカイリュー Satoshi's Kairyu) was the first Pokémon caught by Ash in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, and his fifty-fifth overall.
In animation
History
Ash first encountered Dragonite as a Dragonair on Dragonite Island in A Test in Paradise!. Unlike the other Dragonair on its home island, it had trouble learning how to fly. Seeing this, Ash offered to help Dragonair learn Dragon Dance and master the use of its wings. Using an Electroweb trampoline provided by Pikachu, Ash managed to help Dragonair overcome its shortcomings.
Dragonair then sensed Team Rocket capturing one of its Dragonite friends, and the group intervened. Team Rocket sent out a Wailord to deal with them, and one of its splashes sent Ash flying into the air. Dragonair tried to save him from his fall, but its skin was too slippery for Ash to hold on to. As such, it then proceeded to evolve into Dragonite and save Ash. After Team Rocket was defeated, Dragonite expressed its willingness to come with Ash, and he caught it.
In Raid Battle in The Ruins!, Ash used Dragonite to traverse through the Desert Resort. Later, it took part in a Raid Battle against a giant Golurk in the Colossus Ruins, dealing the finishing blow on it with Goh's Darmanitan.
In A Festival Reunion!, Dragonite was Ash's second and last Pokémon in his World Coronation Series match against Korrina in Shalour City, following the defeat of his Gengar. After defeating her Mienshao, Dragonite went up against Korrina's Lucario. Thanks to its Mega Evolution, Lucario proved to be an extremely tough opponent. Dragonite was able to raise its attack power and speed by using Dragon Dance, and it put up an intense fight, taking on many strong moves like Aura Sphere and Power-Up Punch. It was ultimately the last one standing, winning the match for Ash and causing him to be elevated to the Great Class.
In Sword and Shield, Slumbering Weald!, Dragonite was used alongside Pikachu and Riolu to battle a rampaging Gigantamax Centiskorch. Despite their best efforts, Centiskorch was only defeated when Leon arrived.
In Crowning the Chow Crusher!, Ash entered the Pokémon Grand Eating Contest with Dragonite. However, they failed to get past the first round due to Dragonite's surprisingly small appetite.
In Thrash of the Titans!, Dragonite met Iris at the Opelucid Gym, and was quick to give her a big hug. It was later used in a World Coronation Series match against her, battling Iris's own Dragonite. Despite holding its own, Dragonite was unable to match Iris's Dragonite's power and was recalled. Dragonite was later sent back out to battle Haxorus, eventually emerging victorious thanks to Iris's encouragement for it to enjoy battles, and its newly learned Draco Meteor. This win allowed Ash to advance to the Ultra Class.
In Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, Dragonite devolved back into Dragonair, then Dratini, and finally an Egg as a result of a clash between Dialga and Palkia distorting time. After Arceus stopped the fight between Dialga and Palkia, the Temporal and Spatial Pokémon repaired the distortions their fighting had caused and restored all the devolved Pokémon back to normal.
In Reuniting for the First Time!, Ash used Dragonite during his battle against Wallace in Lilycove City, using it against Wallace's Swampert. The conclusion of this matchup was not shown.
In Aim For The Eight!, Ash used Dragonite as his first Pokémon in his World Coronation Series match against Raihan, using it against his Flygon. Although Dragonite fought well, scoring several strong hits on Flygon, Flygon was able to utilize its Sandstorm to mask its movements and inflict massive damage on Dragonite, and it was ultimately defeated, resulting in its first known loss under Ash's ownership.
In Friends, Rivals, Lend Me Your Spirit!, Ash visited Pallet Town and introduced his Pokémon to his new friends that he caught during his journey around the world, including Dragonite. During the visit, Dragonite trained with Swellow, Staraptor, Unfezant, and Noivern. Ash then used Dragonite as his second Pokémon in his battle against Paul, using it against his Garchomp. However, despite its best effort, Dragonite was defeated. Before Ash left his hometown, it posed with the rest of Ash's Pokémon in a group photo with him.
In Bewitch, Battle, and Bewilder!, Dragonite was the first Pokémon Ash used in his Masters Eight Tournament battle against Cynthia. It went up against her Spiritomb, only to be immediately hit by Sucker Punch. Dragonite then proceeded to land Draco Meteor but was then put to sleep by Hypnosis, before being defeated by multiple consecutive Dream Eater attacks and unable to hear Ash's pleas for it to wake up.
In Toying With Your Motions!, Dragonite was Ash's sixth Pokémon to be sent out during his Masters Eight Tournament match against Leon, being forced out when Leon's Dragapult struck Dracovish with Dragon Tail. Ash attempted to have Dragonite use Dragon Dance and then attack, only for it to get hit by Dragon Tail as well and be forced back into its Poké Ball. Later, Ash sent Dragonite back out after his Lucario had been defeated by Dragapult. This time, the confrontation between the two Dragon types ended in Dragonite's victory, after which Leon sent out his Rillaboom. The two Pokémon clashed in the next episode, where Dragonite, despite having a huge type advantage, ended up losing to the Drummer Pokémon. In Partners in Time!, Dragonite appeared as a vision to Pikachu during his battle against Leon's Charizard. After Ash had won the battle, Dragonite joined him and the rest of his team for the awards ceremony.
Ash left Dragonite along with the rest of his Journeys team at Professor Oak's Laboratory sometime prior to The Road Most Traveled!, as he decided he wanted to start rotating his team for his new journey.
In Getting to the Heart of it All!, Dragonite was shown to have rejoined Ash's team. During the episode, it chased after a train so Ash could tell a Banette that he had found its Trainer.
In The Rainbow and the Pokémon Master!, Dragonite assisted Ash in looking for a missing Charmander around Oak's lab, but to no avail.
Personality and characteristics
Much like Ash's Muk, Dragonite is a hugger, often embracing people and Pokémon, even when it is meeting them for the first time. In Caring for a Mystery!, it even tried to hug an un-hatched Egg, forcing Ash to tell it that it shouldn't do so. It also displayed both courage and determination in saving Ash, which gave it the boost it needed to evolve. It cares for its friends, as it didn't hesitate to come to the aid of its Dragonite friend and Ash.
Like many members of its species, Ash's Dragonite is an adept flyer and relishes the chance to do so. In Raid Battle in The Ruins!, Ash used Dragonite to help him and Pikachu cross the Desert Resort, and was happy to race with Goh and his Beedrill to see who was faster, becoming so engrossed in the race that it sent Ash and Pikachu flying through the air. Dragonite was overjoyed by its victory, and while it obediently returned to its Poké Ball before Ash and Goh entered the cramped Colossus Ruins, it was visibly disappointed. Dragonite has also been shown to have good instincts as a caretaker, as seen in Panic in the Park! when it convinced Ash and Goh that the conflict between Goh's Pokémon would be best left for them to solve themselves, while at the same time it made no effort to stop them from trying to intervene. In There's a New Kid in Town!, it was able to stop a crying fit from Goh's Sobble with simply a gentle hug.
Despite its considerable large size, Dragonite is a light eater, seen during the Pokémon Grand Eating Contest, where Dragonite was fully satisfied during the first round of the contest and was shown to have not even eaten all of the food on its plate.
Dragonite is also an extremely resilient and strong Pokémon, being able to defeat both of Korrina's Pokémon, including her Mega Lucario, and withstand a multitude of attacks. In battle, it gains a fierce disposition, indicating a passion for and enjoyment of battling, though afterward, it will return to its usual happy nature.

Dragonite, along with the rest of Ash's Journeys team, was made available in Pokémon Sword and Shield through Pokémon anime broadcasts in Japan. These Pokémon utilize a common password which was revealed during the Japanese TV broadcasts. Players could claim Dragonite with the password UM1N0KESH1N, a reference to the species' reputation as "The Sea Incarnate". She has 31 IVs in Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, as well as 30 IVs in HP, Defense, and Special Attack.
