A Move Reminder (Japanese: 技思い出し Move Reminder, also わざおしえマニア Move-Teaching Maniac), sometimes called a move relearner by fans, is a character who can teach a Pokémon any move that its species is able to learn by leveling up, and from Generation VI onward, special moves that it has forgotten (such as Egg Moves). The Move Reminder usually requires a Heart Scale in exchange for their services.

In Galar, Jack provides Move Reminder services free of charge (among other services).

From Pokémon Legends: Arceus onward, a Pokémon's moves can be changed at any time outside of battle.

Level-up moves

From Generation II to VI and in Generation VIII, the Move Reminder can teach a Pokémon any move that its species is able to learn at an earlier level. In Generation VII, the Move Reminder can teach a Pokémon any move it can learn via level-up, including moves it would learn at higher levels.

The Move Reminder can only teach a Pokémon moves that its species can learn in the game at hand. They cannot teach moves exclusive to a pre-evolution, even if they had made the present Pokémon forget that move previously. In particular, prior to Generation VIII, many Pokémon that evolve by Evolution stone have a very restricted set of level-up moves in their evolved forms compared to their unevolved forms.

Certain Pokémon may also be taught moves via the Move Reminder that they would not normally learn until a later level or at all by leveling up. For example, in Generation VI, while Lopunny normally learns Healing Wish at level 63 by leveling up, due to also being coded to learn Healing Wish at level 1 (at a level at which it is not normally obtainable), it can also be taught Healing Wish by a Move Reminder at any level. Other moves can only be taught this way for reasons such as the Pokémon not being able to be obtained at a low enough level (e.g. Zapdos and Ancient Power starting in Generation IV) or the species having more than four starting moves (e.g. Kecleon).

Special moves

Starting in Generation VI, Pokémon obtained with special moves often can relearn those moves if they are forgotten. Whether a special move can be relearned via the Move Reminder depends on how it was obtained.

Any Pokémon hatched in Generation VI onward can relearn any move it knew when it hatched. This includes not only Egg Moves, but any other moves it knew when hatched as well (e.g. level-up moves known upon hatching, Volt Tackle bred onto Pichu, etc.). Pokémon hatched in earlier generations do not flag these moves as relearnable, so cannot relearn moves of this type even if they are transferred to a Generation VI or later game.

Pokémon obtained via Mystery Gift from Generation VI onward may mark specific moves as being relearnable. Early Generation VI distributions only flag event-exclusive moves (such as the Pokémon Center Tokyo Bay Inkay's Happy Hour) and Egg Moves that the Pokémon knows when it was distributed; later Generation VI distributions and all distributions from Generation VII and VIII flag all moves the Pokémon knows when distributed (except moves introduced part-way through that generation). Pokémon distributed in earlier generations do not flag these moves as relearnable, so cannot relearn moves of this type even if they are transferred to a Generation VI or later game. In Generation IX, Event Pokemon cannot relearn event-exclusive moves.

Special moves known due to being a hidden Pokémon in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire or an Island Scan Pokémon in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon can also be taught by the Move Reminder if forgotten (even if transferred to a later generation). However, special moves known by Brilliant Pokémon in Generation VIII cannot be relearned.

If a Pokémon is given a battle-ready symbol, the Pokémon's record of relearnable moves are erased, preventing those moves from being relearned (unless they are also level-up moves in that game).

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, certain Pokémon, such as Ceruledge, have moves that are specifically available only via Move Reminder, rather than being extra Level 1 moves. Pokémon caught in a Tera Raid or as a wandering Tera Pokémon cannot remember special moves (moves it doesn't learn by level-up or at level 1). If the move is an Egg Move it can be retaught via Picnic. If the move is a TM it can be retaught via TM, after which it can be easily remembered.

TR moves

Reason: Confirm whether giving a Pokémon a battle-ready symbol deletes relearnable TR moves

In Generation VIII, Pokémon can also be taught any move they had previously learned via TR but forgotten. This only applies if the move was learned using a TR—if the Pokémon can learn a move through TR, but learned the move using a different method, that move cannot be relearned this way.

Previous Evolution Moves

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, certain Pokémon, such as Breloom, have moves such as Spore that are available because a previous evolution learns it as level-up move. It is not possible for Pokémon to relearn these special moves. Even Pokémon caught in a Tera Raid or as a wandering evolved Pokémon cannot relearn these moves even if they were caught knowing them.

They can still relearn these moves if they're available through other means. Garganacl can relearn Iron Defense after it is taught to it with a TM. A Teddiursa will know Baby-Doll Eyes when hatched unless it is bred to have 4 other moves, and so will be able to relearn it when it evolves. And for the previous example, if you breed two Shroomish that have Spore in their moveset, the egg will hatch a Shroomish that will know Spore and can relearn it even after it evolves into Breloom. In some cases though, like Goodra and Acid Armor, there is no way for Goomy to know the move when it hatches and there is no TM.

Restrictions

Like all methods of teaching moves (other than Pokémon Day Care), the Move Reminder cannot overwrite HM moves.

In Pokémon XD, if a Pokémon has four moves, the Move Reminder will not be able to teach it a move until the Move Deleter deletes one of the Pokémon's current moves.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team/Rescue Team DX

Gulpin Link Shop (Japanese: ゴクリンの連結店) allows the player to remember forgotten techniques. However, Gulpin cannot teach Deoxys moves it has forgotten, saying it's a "special" Pokémon, except in DX.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness/Explorers of Sky

Electivire's Link Shop allows the player to remember forgotten techniques. However, Electivire cannot teach Deoxys moves it has forgotten, saying it's a "special" Pokémon. The shop opens after the player gains access to Apple Woods.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare)

Slaking Move Relearner can teach the player's Pokémon attacks which it has forgotten, but only those that it can learn via level-up.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity

Scraggy's Savvy Moves is unlocked after completing Desolate Canyon for the first time. Acting as the Move Deleter and Move Reminder for this game, Scraggy changes the Pokémon's moves.

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Hawlucha runs Hawlucha's Slam School, where the player can relearn their teammates' forgotten moves or change their Abilities.

Locations

While Generation II has no formal Move Reminder, in Pokémon Stadium 2, after defeating the Elite Four and Champion at the Gym Leader Castle, the player will be allowed to reteach a move to one of the Pokémon that was involved in the battle, there are some requirements, though: the six Pokémon should come from a Generation I or Generation II core series game, they can't be registered and the player has to beat the Elite Four and the Champion in a single sitting (i.e. without using the Suspend option). This is the only way in which Pokémon like Mewtwo can learn moves like Disable in Gen I. In Generation IX move remembering is accessible from the menu.
