Giratina (Japanese: ギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. However, it can change form.

Giratina is the version mascot of Pokémon Platinum.

As first revealed by Japan's CoroCoro Magazine, Giratina has two formes. The first (Another Forme) is the form that appeared in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Versions. In this forme, Giratina is has a large, gray, centipede-like body with six short legs. Its legs have gold claws and gold bands on them. It has a tail and a thick black stripe running vertically along the front of its body. There is a series of red horizontal stripes running across the large black one. Three gold half-rings circle the back half of Giratina's neck at the same points that three of the red stripes are at on its front, resembling a ribcage. On its back are two large, black wings that are decorated with red, conical objects. The wings seem oddly out of place, due to the fact that Giratina seems far too heavy to fly effectively. The wings also seem to be ghostly, as it can change shape like it's made of a liquid. Giratina's head and eyes resemble those of Dialga and Palkia, making many have a theory that it is related to the two, which has been confirmed as true in Pokémon Platinum. Giratina's Template:Shiny2 form is nearly opposite in color compared to the original. The colors of the shiny Origin Forme is the same as the Another Forme's except for the wings which appear to be a dark shade of brown.

The second is a new Origin Forme which made its debut in Giratina and the Sky Warrior; it uses this form when traveling through different dimensions. This form is more serpentine than Giratina's Another Forme. The Origin Forme of Giratina has six black streamers on its back that each have a red spike at the end. Its mouth is hidden by the head plates, which swing open sideways when the mouth is opening. Giratina's legs have been reduced to spike-like protrusions. There are four more golden spikes near the edge of the tail. This version of Giratina also appears in Pokémon Platinum.

Giratina is genderless.

Special abilities

As to be expected with other Template:Type2 Pokémon, Giratina is capable of using Ghost, Dark, Psychic and Electrical attacks. Unlike other Dragon Pokémon, Giratina lacks the ability to wield Ice- and Template:Type2 attacks (save for Will-O-Wisp, which most Ghost-types learn anyway). Giratina is one out of seven Pokémon that is capable of using Aura Sphere. Since Giratina is a "true" Dragon Pokémon, it is also capable of using Draco Meteor.

In Platinum, Giratina can transform to its Origin Forme by equipping the Platinum Orb. If the orb is unequipped in battle, it goes back to Another Forme. The Origin Forme has higher offensive stats while the Another Forme has higher defenses.

Giratina is the only known Pokémon that learns Shadow Force.

Behavior

Judging by it's Pokédex entry, it's safe to assume Giratina is a very violent Pokémon that is very protective of its home.

Habitat

Giratina is a very rare (one-of-a-kind) Pokémon due to its "legendary" status. Legends claim that Giratina appears in cemeteries and that this Pokémon supposedly lives in the spirit world, on the reverse side of this one.

Giratina made its anime debut in Giratina and the Sky Warrior. In the movie, Giratina lures Dialga into the Reverse World in order extract revenge against the Temporal Pokémon causing damage to the Reverse World. Zero also attempts to copy Giratina's powers in order to take control over the Reverse World.

It will make another appearance in the twelfth movie alongside Dialga and Palkia.

• Giratina is the only dual-type Pokémon that has weaknesses to both of its own types, as well as the only Template:Type2 legendary Pokémon.
• No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Giratina.
• Giratina is one of very few non-Template:Type2 Pokémon that is able to learn Fly. The others are: Vibrava, Flygon, Latios, and Latias (all four of which have the ability Levitate), Mew, Smeargle, and Arceus (all three of which can learn all HM moves)
• It is one of eight Pokémon which can change into forms specific to itself, the other seven being Castform, Deoxys, Cherrim, Burmy, Rotom, Shaymin, and Arceus. Like Deoxys's other forms were not available in the original two versions of its generation, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, but later became available in the rest of its generation, Giratina's Origin Forme is only available in Pokémon Platinum.
• The Another Forme is shorter and heavier than the Origin Forme.
• In Diamond and Pearl, Giratina is met at level 70, while in Platinum, Giratina is met at level 47, the same as Dialga and Palkia.
• Giratina, as of Platinum, is the only Pokémon to come out from above instead of from the left of the screen during the start of the battle.
• When Giratina is battled in Platinum, it does not have a shadow at first. When it escapes a Poké Ball though, it "gains" one.
• The first released sprite of its Origin Forme was not used in Platinum.
• Giratina, Deoxys and Arceus are the only Pokémon that have battle music specific to them and unused by any other Pokémon. Giratina, however, uses the same theme as Heatran, Regigigas, Darkrai, and the non-legendary Rotom in Diamond and Pearl.
• Giratina is the only one of the dragon trio that has a catch rate of 3.

Origin

Giratina is possibly based on a basilisk. In the Another Forme, the wings may be based off a bat's, it's body has the insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a sauropod. It's origin forme has a body similar to a serpentine, it's six protrusions on it's body may be based off of a scorpion's stinger.

Name origin

Giratina's name may be derived from platinum (written as platina in katakana) and either guillotine, girasol, giraffe or girare (meaning to wander).
