Terrain is a type of field effect in Pokémon Masters EX that affects all Pokémon on the field, based on the mechanic of the same name from the core series games. Only one type of terrain may be present at a time, with any new terrain put in place overwriting the previous terrain. Terrain can be used concurrently alongside weather and zones.

At normal game speed, terrains generally last for 45 seconds. This excludes time that sync pairs spend performing sync moves or max moves, but this includes time spent on everything else (e.g., moves' animation times, stats getting raised or lowered, taking damage from hail or a sandstorm, skills activating, or status conditions being applied or taking effect). At faster speeds, terrains last shorter to accommodate for quicker gameplay. However, the duration of a terrain effect can be extended if the same type of terrain is summoned again or if a Pokémon on the field has a certain skill that extends the duration of the terrain.

There are three types of terrain available in the game: Electric Terrain, Grassy Terrain, and Psychic Terrain. Each terrain powers up attacks of the corresponding type, but some have other effects as well.

Effects

  • Electric Terrain: Increases the damage of all Electric-type attacks by 50%, Prevents Pokémon on the field from being inflicted by Sleep, but it does not cure Pokémon were already asleep before this terrain took effect.
  • Grassy Terrain: Increases the damage of all Grass-type attacks by by 50%. Restores HP of the Pokémon that uses a Grass-type move by 1/16 of their maximum HP (rounded down) unless they hit themselves in confusion. (Using a Grass-type sync move or Grass-type max move does not count.)
  • Psychic Terrain: Increases the damage of all Psychic-type attacks by by 50%.

All these power-ups raise certain damage by 1.5× after power boosts from the following apply: skills, the Physical Moves ↑ Next effect, and the Special Moves ↑ Next effect.

The effects of terrains are summarized in this table:

Terrain Type of boosted attacks Additional effect
Electric Terrain Electric Prevents Pokémon from falling asleep.
Grassy Terrain Grass Restores HP of Pokémon that use a Grass-type move
Psychic Terrain Psychic None

By 6★ EX sync move

The following field sync pairs, when raised to 6★ EX, will implement a terrain just before their sync move is used for the first time in a battle. The duration of this terrain is also extended by 50%. Sync pairs with a field EX role need to be raised to 6★ EX and receive a Field Roll Cake in order to access this effect.

Special cases

In the Legendary Arena or Legendary Gauntlet, every time the opposing Tapu Bulu enters battle—including every moment that it gets a new HP bar—the field of play's terrain instantly becomes Grassy Terrain.

Removing terrain

Except in certain circumstances, such as a battle where all field effects are permanent, terrains will automatically disappear after a certain amount of time. The only way to remove a terrain before the end of this timer is by setting up a new terrain, which will override the previous one, or using the move Defog.
