This route is covered with rough terrain, formed by numerous former {{p|Rhyhorn}} racers in a place where no route existed before. Due to the terrain very unpleasant to walk on, it can only be passed while riding a rental Rhyhorn. Some parts of the route have been softened so that they can be walked on and used as resting spots. Big boulders block some parts of the route, but they can be easily smashed apart by Rhyhorn.

Route 9 (Japanese: 9番道路 Route 9) is a route in western Kalos, connecting Ambrette Town and Glittering Cave. The route is also known as Spikes Passage (Japanese: トゲトゲ山道 Spiky Mountain Path).

Route description

This is a path that was originally forged by retired Rhyhorn racers. As a result, much of the terrain is very rough and can only be traversed on Rhyhorn-back. Big boulders block various parts of the route, but they can be easily smashed apart by Rhyhorn. A female Pokémon Ranger is standing near the entrance to Glittering Cave, fully healing the player's Pokémon if talked to.

X & Y arc

Route 9 first appeared in Shooting Frogadier. Y ended up landing there after being hit by a broken-off helicopter propeller that was damaged during a battle with some Sky Trainer trainees. Y's fall was cushioned due to the Frubbles used by her Froakie, Croaky.

Knowing the layout of Route 9 due to her Rhyhorn racing training with her mother, Grace, Y made her way through the area, only to find Celosia having a conversation with Malva. Y spied on the two and found out about Team Flare's plan to steal the dormant tree form of Xerneas to power the ultimate weapon. As she continued to listen on the two Team Flare members, Celosia, sensing Y's presence, proceeded to attack her with her Honedge. Y was saved by Croaky, who evolved into Frogadier and used its Frubbles to alert a herd of Rhyhorn to create a distraction.

In Gathering Klefki, X, Tierno, Trevor, and Shauna traveled to Route 9 to look for Y. By following a trail of Croaky's Frubbles, the group managed to find her at Route 8.

In Quilladin Stands, one of the 15 Sky Trainers whom Team Flare had mind-controlled into attacking X's group was revealed to have been found on Route 9 before being brought to Laverre City to recover with the other 14.
