In the anime
Noctowl first appeared in Fowl Play. A man was trying to capture a smaller, shiny Noctowl by using traps, but kept failing due to the Owl Pokémon's intelligence. After Team Rocket was sent flying, the Noctowl allowed Ash to have the chance to capture it.
Ash's Noctowl was used very much like his Pidgeotto, but it also had access to Psychic attacks such as Confusion which contribute greatly to Ash's victory against Morty. Ash left his Noctowl at Prof. Oak's lab when he set out for the Hoenn Region.
Wings Alexander also has a Noctowl.
In the manga
In the Pokémon Special manga
Noctowl is seen as one of the Pokémon under Falkner's ownership.

Trivia
Origin
Noctowl's appearance is based on that of the Japanese Eagle Owl, who were seen as wise divine messengers of the gods.
Name origin
Noctowl's name is a combination of nocturnal and owl. Its Japanese name is a combination of 夜 yoru, night, and 木菟 mimizuku, horned owl. The French corruption stands for nocturnal Snowy Owl.
