Ash and Goh enter the Pokémon Catch Adventure Race in Alola, where they’ll catch Pokémon in order to pass checkpoints, all while traversing a mountainous racecourse to the finish. But when the All-Out Brothers recognize Ash as the Alola League Champion, everyone’s off to the races! The brothers always give their all no matter what, and the race is no exception. As they all near the finish line, our heroes and the brothers are neck and neck, but Ash and Goh win by a nose! Meanwhile, Team Rocket have been up to their usual tricks, but they suddenly experience a joyous reunion with their Alolan friends, and emotions run high!

Plot

At Cerise Park, Goh tells Ash about his plans to participate in the Pokémon Catch Adventure Race in Alola to catch himself some more Alolan Pokémon. Since it's a team competition, he invites Ash to come along, which he happily agrees to.

Ash and Goh travel to the uninhabited island where the race is held. No sooner has Goh registered for the competition when two boys running past them suddenly stop and come up to Ash, excitedly addressing him as the Alola League Champion and taking photos with him. Goh is confused until Ash explains that he participated in the local League tournament and won it. The revelation amazes Goh, who asks why Ash didn't tell him about this before, with Ash sheepishly admitting that he just forgot to do so. The two boys introduce themselves as Phil and Mayshure, collectively known as the All-Out Brothers. They express their intention to beat Ash in the race and rush off.

The competitors line up at the starting line as Anna explains the rules. The race has three checkpoints, each of which cannot be passed without catching the correct Pokémon. Each team may use up to three Pokémon per Trainer during the race. Flying on Pokémon is disallowed, but riding and surfing on Pokémon are permitted, as is the use of moves. The winner of the race will receive a trophy and a year's supply of malasadas. At Anna's signal, the race begins and the teams dash off. The first checkpoint is atop a rocky mountain. To avoid slipping on loose rocks during the climb, Goh calls out his Boldore, which he and Ash start riding up the mountainside. While they climb, Team Rocket is lurking nearby, intending to steal loads of Alolan Pokémon during the race. However, being back in Alola also reminds them of Mareanie and Mimikyu, so they decide to pay them a visit once they're done.

Goh receives a mail on his Rotom Phone, informing him that the first Pokémon he needs to catch is an Alolan Geodude. He, Ash, Pikachu, and Grookey start looking around for one, with Grookey being the first to find one. Goh swiftly throws a Poké Ball at the Geodude and catches it, completing the first task.

Meanwhile, the All-Out Brothers have also managed to catch a Geodude and move ahead on their Kommo-o, with Ash and Goh close behind. The brothers discover the mountain path being blocked by a huge boulder, so they decide to use Kommo-o's Z-Move to clear the way. However, their attempted Clangorous Soulblaze comes off so weak that, instead of breaking the boulder, it instead just causes it to start rolling down the path, forcing the brothers to run away. Goh manages to save them by having Boldore use Headbutt, sending the boulder flying backward and almost hitting Team Rocket, who run for their lives and barely avoid being hit by the giant rock. The All-Out Brothers thank Ash and Goh for saving them before moving on. Goh asks Ash if he can use Z-Moves too. He confirms this, but also says he's unable to use them right now since he doesn't have his Z-Ring with him.

The five teams that have succeeded in catching a Geodude move on towards the second checkpoint, which is located on the other side of a lake. Goh receives another message, revealing the next target Pokémon to be Bruxish. He's unsure whether any actually live in the lake, but Ash gets an idea and calls out Lucario, asking it to use its Aura-sensing abilities to see if it can find any Bruxish in the lake. Lucario does as told, and quickly manages to spot one. Goh calls out his Pyukumuku to battle Bruxish for capture. Ash helps out too, and while Pikachu's Electroweb gets countered by Bruxish's Aqua Tail, Pyukumuku manages to badly poison it with Toxic, weakening the Gnash Teeth Pokémon enough for Goh to successfully catch it.

The All-Out Brothers arrive at the lakeside as well, complimenting Ash and Goh's success, before setting out to catch a Bruxish too. They spot one and try to use their Z-Move on it, but not only does their Clangorous Soulblaze come off as extremely weak again, it even misses Bruxish entirely, allowing it to get away. The brothers are dismayed at their Z-Move having not allowed them to catch Bruxish, but Ash comments that what they performed wasn't a real Z-Move, as just having a Z-Ring isn't enough to use one. The brothers feel ashamed at having embarrassed themselves in front of their hero, but Ash tells them that their hearts just aren't in sync with Kommo-o. He tries to describe the correct feeling one needs to have to use a Z-Move, and although Goh says the gestures and words he uses to do so are rather abstract, Phil and Mayshure still thank Ash for his advice and once again set out to catch a Bruxish. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is waiting for the competitors to arrive at another lake, eventually realizing they picked the wrong one to wait at. Frustrated, Jessie decides on a more direct approach.

The four remaining teams, including the All-Out Brothers along with Ash and Goh, head towards the final checkpoint. Entering a forest, Goh is informed that the last task is to catch a Passimian. Knowing how Passimian behave, Ash uses a Berry picked by Pikachu to start playing catch ball to lure them out. Sure enough, two Passimian quickly appear and join the game. However, before Goh can even attempt to catch one of them, Team Rocket appears, trapping Pikachu, Grookey, and the Passimian in a net. They call down the Rocket Prize Master, which gives them a Tropius and a Vileplume. James has Vileplume use Sleep Powder, putting most of the captured Pokémon asleep. While Grookey is unaffected by the move due to being a Grass type, Jessie has Tropius give the Chimp Pokémon one of its fruits, distracting it.

The All-Out Brothers rush in and are alarmed to see bad guys stealing the Champion's Pokémon. As Team Rocket starts making a getaway on their balloon, Ash and Goh attempt to send their own Pokémon after them, but the All-Out Brothers tell them to leave handling the bad guys to them, saying that they're feeling the right way to use a Z-Move now. Ash and Goh agree to this, and the brothers call out their Kommo-o again. This time, their Z-Move is executed successfully, and the Clangorous Soulblaze sends Team Rocket blasting off, while Kommo-o retrieves the stolen Pokémon. Ash and Goh thank the brothers for their help, and the brothers are excited to hear the Champion complimenting them.

Ash and Goh after winning the race

With the interference dealt with, the race resumes, with only the teams of Ash and Goh and the All-Out Brothers remaining in the running. Both teams succeed in catching a Passimian each, before hurrying towards the goal. While Goh and Mayshure cross the finish line simultaneously, Ash crosses it just before Phil does, making Ash and Goh the winners. While they're given the trophy, the All-Out Brothers are given a special prize for their heroic efforts against Team Rocket, receiving the year's supply of malasadas, which they happily accept. Meanwhile, Team Rocket crashes down in a familiar hot spring, where they're reunited with Mareanie and Mimikyu. Unfortunately for the trio, their arrival was also noticed by Bewear, who's happy to see them again and gives them and their Pokémon one of her crushing bear hugs.

As the race day concludes, the All-Out Brothers come up to Ash and Goh, thanking Ash for the advice that allowed them to use their Z-Move properly and saying they'll be sure to challenge him to a battle in the future. No sooner have the brothers left that Ash receives a message on his Rotom Phone, informing him that his first World Coronation Series Ultra Class battle has been scheduled to happen in one week, his opponent being the Trainer currently ranked as the 27th: Sinnoh's top Gym Leader, Volkner.
